I wonder why the 80s cartoon origin isn't the official one. Makes the most sense. Splinter was actually a man who had been exiled/lived in the sewers when they all came into contact with the mutagen.

The new movie origin was better on the sense that genetic testing makes sense as opposed to them just crawling around in some goop that shredder like.. Dropped down the sewers accidentally.. I guess?

You don't think it's difficult to self teach yourself? People didnt just come up with martial arts out of their asses. People created and refined martial arts through experience. Original Splinter had a teacher, his owner. 80s toon and 2012 Splinter just streamlined it by making Yoshi Splinter. The new
Splinter wasn't even mutated that much longer than the turtles, why is he their master if he just recently read this?
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they all mutate at the same time in every iteration? The rat was just older than the turtles.

And I don't mean to undermine the history of martial arts with my comment. I'm just saying that it's possible to teach yourself when
A, you are determined to keep your mutated children occupied and out of trouble and B, to physically vent your own frustrations thanks to mutation and abandonment.

I'd love to learn that a master Yoshi was his handler which aided in his learning abilities. It wouldn't break the plot to retcon that into the sequel.
"April. Your father had an assisstant. He disappeared shortly before Mr. Sacks started funding/helping with Project Renaissance. His name was Hamato Yoshi... Oroku Saki's rival."
Where they go to tie that in is on them but it'd work.

An origin story about mutant turtes that learn ninjitsu is always going to be ridiculous, but one where Splinter is Hamato Yoshi is also always going to be the best from all possible vantage points.

Someone asked this before, but how exactly did Splinter in this movie know so much(everything, actually) about the Shredder and Eric Sachs? It makes no sense. If he was Hamato Yoshi, it would make perfect sense. But nope, had to have April involved in all aspects of the plot.

Pretty easy answer.
He was an elder rat who witnessed things in the lab. Most likely overheard some of Eric Sacks plans.

well splinter and the turtles were in the lab when sachs burned it down. I can't remember ALL the details from the burning scene but it probably gave them some strong clues.

Anyway I'm not apologizing for the origin cause it's among my least fav origin variant to-date. And fully agree, origins where splinter *is* yoshi are best for dramatic reasons, it makes the story stronger. If they want to connect the characters in some way THAT is how you do it. Just make shredder and splinter know each-other, simple. that's ALL you need. You don't need to connect april to their past or add on a lot of other stuff that feels a lot less likely and false.

Same here and I agree. I might be piling on my explanations to make sense of it, but Splinter=Yoshi is the better option. 2012 series doesn't portray this well despite how gokd the show is. For one, it looks like Splinter is putting the turtles into the mutagen in the intro and second, they mention something like "a man, a rat and four turtles made contact with the mutagen..." So then who is rat?

So what villians would you like to see the in the second...Rat King? Krang? Bobop and Rock stead. Baxter Stockman?

Unfortunately they'll probably go with Bebop and Rocksteady because "my childhood!" but I'd love to see Rat King (to provide Splinter with more screen time and back story perhaps) and a Kraang invasion (a serious take on the pink, tentacled aliens could be visually stunning). Also, Casey Jones. It's funny because he'll probably be played by some young actor everyone hates and have just as much spunk as 2012 Casey but everyone will hate because.

Rumors are it's gonna be April turned evil, and she'll don the shredder suit when she finds out sachs was actually her father.

eww...guess that's why they
killed off karai
. then again she couldn't be
splinter's daughter if he really is just a rat
lol

Havebt seen it but who was Shredder? Not Sachs? Shraeder? Oroku Saki?

Some Japanese guy whose face we never see. He's supposed to be Oroku Saki but is never mentioned by name. No infamous Colonel Schrader, Fichtner relegated to henchman.

Saw this last night.

Its was fucking awful. Just dumb action and effects with an incoherent plot. Standard Michael Bay fair.

If you want good Ninja turtles go watch the Nickelodeon cartoon.

Well, it wasn't terrible. It definitely wasn't good, but it wasn't like the flick destroyed my childhood in anyway. It was better than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.

Johnny Knoxville was distracting as all hell as Leonardo. The first time he spoke in the film I expected him to follow up with, "...and welcome to Jackass!" He has moments where it isn't so obvious, but once every few lines it just sticks out way too much.

Even better, if you already watch and enjoy the Nickelodeon cartoon, you get to enjoy a little side piece with this movie. Win-win.

Just got back from the movie. I thought it was pretty good. All the hate seems pretty extreme. Megan Fox wasn't even that bad. The turtles were awesome. Shredder was awesome. Splinter was awesome. I want to see more Splinter. I like that his tail was used a lot during his fights. Bring on a sequel I say.

And that thing about
April delivering the finishing blow to Shredder from some people here, made it sound like she comes out of nowhere and gave him some super finisher killing him. They just swing her over to him and she kicks from an already mostly destroyed tower.

who was
baxter stockman in the movie?
i saw his name in the credits but dont recall them in the film.

Yeah, he was pretty much cut from the movie. If they had planned it from the start, "Eric Sachs" would've probably been named Baxter Stockman, but it's clear that when shooting began Eric Sachs was Oroku Saki, the Shredder.

itwasTuesday

He wasn't alone.
I saw it today, and it seems like this and guardians are two movies that brought the fun back. Yeah not perfect, and not really even close to perfect, But it was fun.

And my showing wasn't filled with mini kids. Also the 3d seem pretty good too.

This doesn't really have anything to do with this movie, other than seeing people place winter soldier above it. I just saw winter soldier, and holy shit is winter soldier lame.

Just thinking about it now...

Shredder had NO motivation in this movie to pretty much exist...like who the fuck is he why would he wear this costume...this Shredder was so hollow...he had just no background and character...

I'm still on the fence. I hate all the Michael Bay Transformers movies and I have been getting similar vibes here. For someone who loves the original movie despite its problems, is this worth seeing?

I didn't have any issues with it. We took our 3yr to see it and he totally loved it and he watches the hell out of the current cartoon.

Saw this film with a friend who is moving out of town. This is what he wanted to see, so I went. I rarely see films that get long threads on GAF, so I thought I'd comment here.

The film might be fine for children (not sure), but it's certainly not a film for adults. Massive plot holes abound throughout the film; characters are flimsy, with many having no clear motivations or dimension; the story is hackneyed and trite, with little attempt to deviate from action convention.

However, I think children and people looking for brainless entertainment might enjoy it, but I can't speak to that audience as I'm not really a part of it.

This movie was so much fun. Saw guardians the week before and now this. I was basically dragged by my older bro for this one because I was afraid of being let down and I'm glad I actually came out surprised.

This movie is just another fun summer blockbuster flick getting unjustly bashed by snobby media critics. I hope we see sequels because I had a whole Lotta fun which is why I went to see it. I don't understand people who go in to see a turtles movie expecting to see anything other than what this movie put out.

I think the people that wanted a Turtles movie are exactly the people who wouldn't get anything out of it, just like people that wanted a Transformers movie (probably) wouldn't get anything out of those, either (I'm not one of them, so I don't know).

The emphasis of these movies are on different things than what most "fans" focused on in the franchise they grew up with. The CGI characters aren't really the focus, and their personalities and relationships are watered down and oversimplified. If you don't care about Optimus Prime or Leonardo as characters, and just wanted to see Giant Robots or Mutant Turtles wreck shit up in a mindless way, you'll walk away entertained. If you wanted to re-experience the bonds between the characters, their personalities fleshed out (rather than reduced), and have actual character motivations that can be described in more than one sentence, you probably won't.

If you wanted all of that in a 90-120 minute movie, you're not going to get a lot of awesome action... which the turtles should provide if given the option between the two.

I've said this in the past and it still holds true after seeing it: This may not be the turtles film I've always wanted nor the one I'd make, but it's perfectly fine being the movie it is.

Edit: Regarding my first comment, it would be nice to have "why not both?" but since it's a live action film, it's always going to factor in human perspective. The movie features the on screen actors discovering mutant turtles for the first time which is supposed to represent us if it were to ever happen in real life. Maybe the sequel can set up the turtles' perspective and how humans react to them and how it makes them feel.

I feel like the first TMNT movie struck a pretty good balance between action and pathos, but it has been a few years so maybe I'm wrong.

And I'm not saying this TMNT is some kind of abomination. It's just not for me -- just like the Transformers movies. I understand what other people see in these films, but I was hoping for a bit more. What it goes for it does serviceably. I'd say the Transformers movie do what it does better, but I don't like them much either.

I actually feel like this movie had a lot in common with that movie, and not because of the Michael Bay connection. I almost feel like they could co-exist in the same universe. I smell a crossover!!! jk

The original was great but lacked action. It had some scenes, but too many were too short and some used the cover of darkness to get around having to perform them.

Saw the movie last night. I expected to hate it, but honestly didn't think it was that bad. Pretty average, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. The turtles themselves were pretty average; they weren't bad, but their personalities tended to be a little over done. One episode of the new tv show has the turtles with more personality than this movie. Likewise, Shredder really is pretty generic in this movie; he has really no vendetta with the turtles and is little more than a hulking robot with no personality. The great thing about the series is the vendetta that splinter and shredder have that's being played out through the turtles and the foot, there's none of that in this movie. The foot themselves are just a generic army, with Karai barking orders and never getting an ounce of characterization.

They could of done worse, but they could have done so much more. It's not the atrocity I was worried it would be; it's somewhat entertaining and general population will be pleased.

Granted, I love the original TMNT movie; I think it's the absolute best they could do with the material at the time, and that the costumes still look great.

ERMYGERD!
Saw the trailer in IMAX 3D last night before Guardians of the Galaxy and I must say... Megan's ass looks good in IMAX 3D.

Saw the movie, thought it SUCKED.

no, that's a bit harsh. I thought it was something good to watch if you are utterly bored and you have seen everything and there is nothing else to do.

I am usually not harsh on movies, but as a kid, ninja turtles was my thing. I remember running into an old elementary school classmate and she was telling me how me and this other kid in class use to just talk about ninja turtles all the time.

So I go to see this expecting the worst (and usually when this happens, I am pleasantly surprised, but not this time) and I leave feeling neither satisfied nor disappointed.

I was just confused I guess.....yea, I guess thats the best way to describe how I FELT about the movie. I was confused about what to FEEL. I rarely feel like that about a movie.

Things I liked

- The action - action was great. Some of the scenes were just ridiculous fun.
- Megan Fox - I dont know what it is about this woman but she is just to beautiful. I know some of it apparently is plastic surgery but damn, she is just captivating to look at, at least for me. I thought her acting was passable to, maybe because I was feeling that THIRST.
- Shredder - I thought the guy they got to play Shredder and the way they portrayed was on point. It felt like they treated this character with respect as opposed to ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS, though his biggest problem is he has no REAL motivations except, "I'm a bad Guy"
- Splinter - As a character, they got him right. With that said, i dont think it's hard to get splinter right.

Things I hated/disliked

- Splinter- He looked fucking terrible. Who greenlit this? That shit was just terrible looking. Could they not make him look more appealing?
- Ninja Turtles looks - Im sorry, I thought I would be able to get use to how they looked but they still looked like shit.
-The NInja turtles personalities - They never give you a chance to have an affinity towards each turtle and find a fondess to each one and the difference between them. They show you the differences but its not done the right way. which leads to my next 2 points...
- Character development - entirely rushed with basically NONE of this whatsoever. So you never get a feel for the characters or get a true understanding of them
- Pacing - Terrible Terrible Rushed pacing. It's basically just Wam Bam Thank you Mam. Which is good for an action movie where the characters dont matter I guess. But for something like Ninja Turtles, pacing is very important imo and I think this is the biggest problem with the movie.
- Will Arnett - Everything he did in the movie felt forced and unnatural. I love Will Arnett, and I dont particularly blame him for the failure of his role. More to the director/writing.
- Comedic Beats - this ties back to the pacing of the movie, but NONE of the jokes which I could tell were intended to be jokes worked for myself or the audience I was with and it was because of the pacing and comedic beats. Comedy is timing, and the timing of everything was just OFF. The only joke that worked was the Elevator rap scene. Thats IT. (and that was well done).
- Directing and Writing - obviously all of the above can be attributed to these 2 things.

Listen, I went in and turned my brain off hoping that would help me enjoy this film, and it did during the action scenes. but I couldnt help but see how terrible of a product this was. Maybe cause I was secretly expecting to be blown away as a old time fan.

I guess the best way to describe the film is it's just a really Empty, Soulless and Shallow film.
