Smash Bros. 3DS Japanese Packaging POSSIBLY Indicates Snake is cut from the game

Uhhh guys, isn't Rayman technically in the game too? Albeit as a trophy. I don't think Ubisoft is credited on the box art, so I'm thinking only if the character is on the box art are they credited.

On the same merit, Sonic wouldn't fit either. Can't remember a Sega game on Nintendo's system prior to the GameCube or GBA.

That's why they're guest characters. Metal Gear existed on the NES, GBC, GCN, and 3DS.

Also, Ubisoft isn't on the copyright either on the alleged packaging. Rayman is in the game as a trophy. Treasure has a Sin and Punishment Assist Trophy.

But since the gamecube and gba, Sonic has been on every nintendo console... Anyways i don't see the probem if Snake is in or not personally. He may be cut from Smash but we may see him in a new playstation all-stars

It does, though. And we still have plenty of characters in the game without Snake :3
Why should it matter? He was already in Brawl and he's a well known character from an established franchise.
I'd probably not be discussing this but seeing people actually happy that he's not in just baffles me.

Any cut character should be mourned.

Snake was good, unique in terms of moveset and theme. Plus, those codec easter eggs were wonderful and more than justified his inclusion. I was kinda hoping the Kid Icarus Uprising cast and the MGS cast would do a big codec easter egg for Smash 4...

Really sad if he's not coming back, he's so fun to play in Brawl/Project M

There's still hope with the Wii U version and future DLC!

Also, stay classy Snake-haters

It was a pic of the day a while back. It's his NES Open Tournament Golf costume. As for Samus....

Yes! The Open Tournament Golf outfit is awesome. I also use it in Mario Golf World Tour. Not that I'm ever gonna play as Mario in Smash, but still, neat inclusion.

Still not losing hope on a unique character until the final roster is shown.

For everyone feeling so sure of themselves, let's see what happens first. I'll link this thread to all the haters IF he's still in, cause watch, if he's still back in I can imagine many people going "yesss! glad he was never cut!".

To their credit, I am pretty sure the people being actively opposed to him being in Smash would suddenly change their minds just like that.

You have a point .... unless they CUT him xD

I'm surprised that people view it as the character "being cut". It was a weird cross developer promotion the first time it happened with no guarantee to happen again. Character rights like that get messy.

? A character was in the previous installment of the franchise and then he isn't in the seuqle. That's called being cut.

But since the gamecube and gba, Sonic has been on every nintendo console...
So has Snake!

1988: Metal Gear (NES)
1990: Snake's Revenge (NES)
2000: Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (GBC)
2001: Konami Krazy Racers (GBA, had Gray Fox instead of Snake but still MGS!)
2002: Evolution Skateboarding (GC, playable Snake & other MGS characters)
2003: DreamMix TV World Fighters (GC, Snake is a playable character)
2004: Metal Gear Sold: The Twin Snakes (GC)
2005: Yu-Gi-Oh! 7 Trials to Glory: World Championship Tournament 2005 (GBA, cameo)
2007: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Rev, again as a playable character)
2010: New International Track & Field (DS, playable here to)
2011: Scribblenauts (DS, JP version has Snake)
2012: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (3DS)

Seems like Snake/MGS is more Nintendo relevant in the past decade+ than it was in the previous! Hey Snake Eater is on 3DS? Smash is on 3DS? Nope he totally doesn't belong!

It does?

Where has Megaman been as of late?
In a cancelled would-be paid demo >_<

Do you really think that he didn't know if Snake was in the game at that point? That was only a few months ago and the roster was decided near the start of development. He's the creator of Metal Gear and head of the main MGS developer as well as being vice president of Konami Entertainment Japan. Of course he knows. He just couldn't outright say it either way.

To their credit, I am pretty sure the people being actively opposed to him being in Smash would suddenly change their minds just like that.

Exactly. ALL he really needs is a tune up in his moveset, as well as his hitboxes and strength. That's pretty much it.

I don't know how development and porting works but I would imagine it wouldn't be the hardest thing for the team to do. I think the biggest thing Bandai Namco and Sakurai would have to do is make new codecs, but oh my god, apparently this is too much because we should cut a character many people actually liked!

Seriously, I would not count him out just yet. If he is cut though, many of us will be bummed. If anything, I would love to see almost the entire Brawl cast return so everyone's happy!

I was referring to the output of Metal Gear games on Nintendo consoles, which is comparable.

Twin Snakes: 2004 - Brawl: 2008
MGS3D: 2012 - Smash 4: 2014
Ah, but you can see why Nintendo would probably not want to promote anything of Konami when they haven't released anything or developing anything for Wii U as of present.

As much I want Snake back in all honesty the writing was on the wall he wasn't gonna be back =/

LOL at the people saying "It was obvious!!1". It wasn't obvious at all.
And, I don't know, I still have a glimmer of hope. He did fit amazingly.
Not that I care about him specifically, I just hate to lose characters who had a very unique style and moveset. You cut a semi-clone like Wolf? I can live easily with that and StarFox is one of my favorite franchises ever. StarFox still gets more than enough recognition. You cut Snake? Well that brings away a whole lot of other things with him and that can't be good (never played a MGS game).

This poster gets it.

By that logic he wouldn't have been in Brawl.

I enjoyed playing as Snake a lot. Very unique moveset.
Well, Konami supported Wii with games in general at least. Outside of Virtual Console they're not releasing any Wii U games at all. Their 3DS support is almost nothing now too.

I wouldn't say this is definitive, but I don't expect him to be in regardless. It would be a welcome surprise, though as he had a cool moveset. If they drop him, I'd love to learn they cloned his moves into someone else.

To be fair, how often do we even get MGS games in general? The 3DS port was fine.

Also, I haven't seen any of you answer the other posters. Where has Mega Man been?

It isn't clear to me if this packaging is actual game packaging or if it is promotional packaging, but Konami is not listed as a character credit.

As Baron Von Loathsome pointed out, there is a list of 3rd party guests focused on the back, but Snake is not mentioned at all.

Thanks to Tripon for packaging.

There's a flaw in the logic here:

Notice the package never credits Sega here, despite being confiremd. Copyright notices are only for the characters appearing/possibly appearing on thepackage.

I'm not saying it's likely he'll return. I just think it's weird that Sakurai supposedly isn't bringing him back in Smash 4 even though Kojima is okay with it and with Snake being such a big character that would attract many fans to the game again.

If that means Sami gets the moveset (with fixed hitboxes), then I'm all for it.

Lets go Sami!

I'm afraid you're best bet is Project M
;)

My bad, I meant would NOT suddenly change their mind.

That's interesting find. I didn't even notice that.
