Vice: Meet the Female Gamer Born of Anti-Feminist Internet Drama

http://www.vice.com/read/meet-the-female-gamer-mascot-created-by-anti-feminists-828

Had no idea about any of this stuff until reading this article, and it works as a good summary. The whole thing is insane and the amount of cognitive dissonance displayed by these /v/ users is ridiculous. They hate feminists and attack people for being fake feminists. They threaten people on the internet, and then say the people are attention seeking when they complain about being threatened. But this character is the most ridiculous part. A faux "everyday woman" icon purely to troll feminists.

First tragedy, then farce.
Yeah,

I do think FYC should have probably not included her in their product. But I also understand they probably need the money. Soo.. I mean, is it wrong to troll trollers by taking their money and playing along to push your agenda?

I guess it'd be kind of dickish to take their money and not do something nice in return.

How are they trolling /v/?

I'm not entirely sure what's going on in that article, going to have to do a double or triple read-through, but I love this:

That's an incredibly biased article. People were calling the writer out in the comments and look at how they're all deleted now. It's really spiteful to twist 4chan donating money to a good cause into something bad.

How are they trolling /v/?

making them believe VJ is going to appear in the final game and then not putting her in the game at all? I'm unclear on the nature of the supporting /v/ did... actually, I'm a bit unclear regarding crowdfunding: what if a feature you promised during the backing period doesn't make it to the final product? Can you sue the people behind the project? Or the creators only have an "obligation of making their best effort" instead of achieving the exact result that was promised?

A little loaded. If Vice thinks 4chan are that bad to the bone, they should be able to let their actions speak for themselves, instead of including sentences like this:

One user suggested the character should be “just an average female gamer to troll everyone,” because “all the tards in the media” would (reasonably) expect something sexist and/or gross from 4chan.

Also, I think there is a real non-binary modern day feminist named Vivian James, so it's a little confusing regardless.

Pretty much. People just need that scapegoat in situations like this I guess.

/v/ is deserving every shit it gets, especially for all the bullying and harassment that it's generating, but this article is so strangely made. It's not even a good article because of that. The only purpose of it is to make sure you hate on /v/ but partially because of the wrong reasons.

If we agree that the TFYC project is a good thing, does it matter who's donating the money? You know, if there are people who don't like that 4chan is getting attention, give even more money so it will be TFYC shouting their praises. Then it will be a donating war.

Yes.

YES!!!!!

EVERYONE DONATE TO BE THE #1 DONATOR SO EVERYONE CAN SING YOUR PRAISES ON TWITTER!!!!!!

But seriously, at the end of the day, we should be happy right?

Also, lolz @ the comment section disappearing.

I also have the screen shot for the deleted comments. Is it okay to link it to the thread mods? or if OP wants to go ahead and do that...?

You forgot the part where /v/ never collectively tried to bully or harass anyone here. Not saying /v/ users are saints, but most of them just want to call people out on their bullshit.

The article is trying to twist the donation of thousands of dollars to an event intended to help encourage female game developers into somehow being anti-women, that's a bit too silly for me.

Their charitable efforts are part of a plan to spite Zoe Quinn, creator of the game Depression Quest. A portion of the users on /v/, 4chan’s video games forum (a place historically unfriendly to women and especially to feminists), have long disliked Quinn, a self-proclaimed feminist, for reasons that aren’t especially clear but feel suspiciously like good old-fashioned misogyny.

Alright, yeah, I see where this is going. How is it again that balanced articles happen to be completely nonexistent right now?

It's good that they're donating but it's not unfair to expose why they're doing it. Their money is as good as everyone else's, their motivations and goals aren't. This is the equivalent of your 13 year old cousin who has no history of caring about anyone but themselves posting a ice bucket challenge video on Facebook to make it look like they do, in fact, care about the world before going back to their regular behaviour. You know their motivations but don't want to call them out because they're doing something that's pretty cool. The article is pretty catty though.

I didn't say that /v/ in its entirety is bullying, I said that it generates it, even if not intentionally.

It's interesting to note that according to TFYC's Twitter Vice didn't even bother contacting them for any kind of statement or interview before they ran the article.

Yeah, but if that kid is also donating money... who the fuck cares?

Isn't this the 2nd article Vice has written that's been misleading about this controversy? I mean jesus folks, you have a pretty easy punching bag, how do you fuck this up?

I've never been particularly fond of 4chan but...

This article is tripe. Who wrote this and thought it'd be ok to put on the internet. Like this whole thing is shady and I'm honestly not sure what to think of the whole situation (this is the first I've heard of it), but my gut reaction "what a terribly written article."

What did they do wrong here? I don't get it. That seems like a genuinely great thing to do.

The reason they're donating to charity shouldn't matter, a good thing is a good thing regardless of motivation.

Making a controversy out of it is exactly what they want because it "proves" their point.

I kinda figured /v/ would do this to prove a point instead of a collaborated, genuine interest in doing it.

But ay. TFYC got their money. Charity woo

Yeah, the VICE writer acts like there's no legitimate reason for /v/ picking this particular charity/cause.

Here's the tweets that have been linked in past threads.
Before we go down this rabbit hole, who is the FYC? Just looking at their face book doesn't give me any good feelings. Along with brandishing the word woman like some sort of weapon, one post even coming off as a challenge about supporting women in video games, this is their info blurb:

The Fine Young Capitalists mission is to create media using under-represented labour for unexplored demographics to fund non-profit organizations.
How is this at all about helping women?

I think some folks here are mad and realizing just how strangley, deceptively intelligent 4chan actually is. The hate, trolling, vitriol, bitterness and indifference is just a façade. There are a lot of smart, very reasonable folks there. Hell, most users are.

The sentence immediately following this on their IndieGogo campaign:

We took 5 women who had never designed a video game before and gave them professional concept artists to create their ideal game. We created a prototype and now want the internet to vote on the best game so we can make it and give all the proceeds to charity.

They might be dicks but I gotta hand it to them, this is some next level shit.
