Yoshi's Island explains the differences in Mario and Luigi's personalities

At their core, both characters are heroic do-gooders. The difference is that Mario is carelessly courageous, while Luigi is extremely cautious to the point of near cowardice.

Why?

Because when they were infants (and we've seen that as infants they were surprisingly intelligent and capable) they had two very different experiences.

Mario went on an adventure. Sure, he was occasionally scared, but everything always worked out in 30 seconds or less. He faced ghosts, wizards, a giant baby turtle monster, and a whole host of other things and came out entirely unscathed.

However while all of this was happening, Luigi was being held prisoner by strangers who apparently hated him (and didn't even let him out of the bag they'd abducted him in).

How long did Yoshi's Island take? Days at least, I would say. Days being held prisoner in some dank castle. No one to comfort you and tell you it's going to be alright. What would that do to a child?

So there you have it, my idle thoughts have brought me to the conclusion that Mario and Luigi are the characters they are all because of Yoshi's Island.

This has been your "way more thought put into this than necessary" post for the day.

Great thread. The game also explains why Kamek is so protective of Bowsie and vice-versa. Yes, we're calling Baby Bowser "Bowsie" now.

Next Luigi game : Luigi with helps of friends get a machine time
(you can make it with microwave oven + bananas)
to save himself before Yoshi did it. This is
Will never happen Yoshi will get the sh#t out of the flowers and enemies before Luigi lol and Luigi end up being a coward.
an inception.

Mario was a dick who would take advantage of Yoshi whenever he needed to save his own ass. In Yoshi's Island, Yoshi busts his ass to rescue Mario. In SMW Mario beats Yoshi to make him eat and sends Yoshi to his death just to gain an extra vertical leap.

Also, Luigi didn't cry like a bitch when he was seperated.

The Luigi timeline is the fallen hero timeline where Mario is always captured and it's up to Luigi to save him and the kingdom.

The timeline split began in Mario's Time Machine.

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
Diving into Mario Lore is the best thing cause you can uncover so much and all of it is acually nonsense. But you know it's nonsense, so it's okay.

Yoshi's Island is a mainline Mario game so it is canon - end of discussion.

How can this even be a discussion? It's called "Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island"

Also Yoshis New Island reveals Mario goes back in time to help his baby self out on the regular. You'd think he'd also try preventing Luigi's constant kidnappings too but nope.

What a dick

When did Luigi really start to get a personality anyway? I don't really recall him having any defined traits until Luigi's mansion. In the games anyway, not counting the cartoons or movie.

Nowadays he's pretty strongly equated with his awe shucks bumbler personality. But there seems to be 20 years where he didn't really have any personality at all.

Jr grew up and became the modern day DK while the classic DK became
fucking
Cranky Kong.

Well, this is kind of sketchy too...the original Rare version of Cranky was suppose to be the original Donkey Kong while, Jr. became the new Donkey Kong. But I guess people at Nintendo of Japan were unhappy about this, so they changed the backstory so Cranky now became the grandfather of the original Donkey Kong, and DK jr. still exists.

The current Retro games use the revised retcon...

Nope, yoshi's island is called yoshis island and the island in super Mario world is called dinosaur land I believe

Nope, Dinosaur Land is the whole region, including the Donut Plains, Vanilla Dome/Heights, Forest of Illusion... Basically the entire map of Super Mario World.

But that particular area is called Yoshi's Island.

Also the Mario Wiki claims they are both the same island.

Both paper mario and super mario rpg had pieces of it... (i have no idea how intentional it was)

please tell me that you are an actual admin on the mario wiki

edit: this is not a joke i am genuinely interested

Apparently Mario Wiki has a fake news section, today's articles include an Obit for Monita:

It is important during Summer to remember to not leave electrical objects running as they may overheat, and cause fires in small amusement parks. Unfortunately, this is what happened to Monita, sort of, as she overheated causing her to power down permanently. Monita was discovered in the Luigi's Ghost Mansion attraction by several players who’d snuck in after hours to do *REMOVED FOR SEVERAL POTENTIALLTY LAWBREAKING REASONS*.

Many people were saddened by this sudden death, most of all was Prince Monita who discovered that his Princess had died alongside Monita. “This is simply terrible” he stated, before shutting down due to high temperatures. The Yoshi Carts that trundle along also expressed their sadness at her death, before punching a prospective Mario right in the face. Attractions where Monita played a big role like in Pikmin Adventure, or Takamaru’s Ninja Castle have closed down for a while, but don’t worry you can still do Octopus Dance, what do you mean that’s not a good thing?

The people of Nintendo Land have entered a state of mourning for her, however this has proven difficult due to the joyous music that is continuously playing. Another obstacle in the way of the mourning is that many of the fun games don’t need Monita at all so people still laugh when they play those. Many people feel that with Monita dead the park can get safer. One park inspector complained about the possible rise of a robot army, god knows where he got that idea from. Another one was saying how it might mean that the train which goes round the park may fall into disuse, especially as three park guests fell off it the other day. Also, one lucky obituary writer person found out that a used Monita is worth a mint on eBay.

What if they forced him to watch torture scenes, which explains his latent hatred-fueled path of destruction in Mario Kart? Like a serial killer who triggered years later.

I can't believe NoA's marketing on that still works nearly 20 years later. Amazing. We caught on to SMB2, but they still have us doubting that one.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I think this is a bigger one, but it's a little hard to tell on a phone:

I fucking love this image, it's the perfect representation of the kind of canon I wish Mario adhered to.
