2004 gaming wise gets ignored way too often

Half Life 2
Halo 2
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Burnout 3
Fable 1
Metal Gear Solid 3
Knights of the Old Republic 2
Far Cry
Ninja Gaiden
Star Wars Battlefront
Doom 3
Tales of Symphonia
Def Jam: Fight for NY
Katamari Damacy
Rome: Total War
World of Warcraft
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Rachet and Clank up Your Arsenal

I mean, LOOK AT THIS FUCKING LIST. Half Life 2 sweeped GOTY awards due to its excellently structured design and narrative. Halo 2 was multiplayer crack for console owners. GTA San Andreas is still the best GTA title in a lot of ways. Metal Gear Solid 3 is the last excellent MGS title, Rising recently proved itself as a Metal Gear game. Burnout 3 had a lot more speed than past Burnouts, making it even more fun and gratifying.

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door is one of Nintendo's greatest games, with wit all audiences can enjoy. Fable 1 is still the best Fable when it comes to the core experience, the storyline and pacing haven't been matched by other Fable games. Knights of the Old Republic 2 has stronger writing, characterization, and world building compared to KOTOR 1. Ninja Gaiden is a character action game that is unique in its structure and design, revitalizing a long dead series.

Far Cry was a linear but open shooter with fantastic AI. Doom 3 was a competent shooter that looked really pretty. Katamari Damacy is a puzzle game that doesn't require long stretches of thinking, making it really unique. World of Warcraft is still relevant right now, and its slain multiple MMOs that share its design. Rachet and Clank Up Your Arsenal is the best PS2 Rachet game due to its immaculate pacing, humor, weapon variety, and challenge. Chronicles of Riddick is a stealth based first person game set in a grungy but futuristic prison, the experience itself is great.

All the games on this list are must own games, games that people should track down now and play.

EDIT: Okay, it doesn't go ignored, but I think its a better year than 1998, 2001, and 2007.

What? By who? Is there a list of years and 2004 isn't on there. Because I slept with a supermodel that year and then we played Halo2 so 2004 should be on there.

I don't think it gets ignored, I just think people don't think "Oh, this came out in 2004? Dope"

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Actually, I see 2004 mentioned quite often in "best years of gaming" threads, along with 1998 and 2007.

You forgot Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin 2, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and Super Mario 64 DS, which make 2004 even better.

NO WAY

I had the same idea for a thread today while in the shower. I was remembering trying out Katamari and realized a ton of excellent games came out around the same time.

brofist, OP.

Definitely one of the best years, but I'm not sure it gets ignored often. I always see it mentioned with other popular choices like 1998 or 2007.

Oh shit, I slept with a supermodel in 2004 too. It couldn't be....

Okay, I'm going to do a semi 180.

2004 was a better year in gaming than 1998, 2001, and 2007. That is my main point and argument now.

You forgot UT2K4 and Painkiller.

2004 was the first time I built a gaming PC from the ground up and oh man was that ever a good year to do so. I had moved out on my own that year so it was the first time I had cable internet too, after years of dialup. So City of Heroes and WoW were amazing experiences, before that the only online games I'd been able to play were PSO and WC3.

I see it more as a tier 2 year. Most of the big games are sequels. Refinements of the revolutions brought in 2001 and earlier
1998, 2001, and 2007 had far more impact on their respective generations as they spawned new IPs and new gameplay types and game genres.

I'm not referencing impact, I'm talking about quality and variety. The refinement in 2004 software is also something I view as a huge positive, you essentially got the best of the best of that generation, all in one year.

I remember 2004 as a kickass year in gaming. Halo 2 and Battlefront totally justified my purchase of an xbox that March, and GTA was just the icing on the cake.

All I see is sequels and disappointment here.

HL2, GTA:SA, PM TTYD, TOS, Doom 3, are all highly expected and highly disappointing sequels to me.

Rome and MGS3 were great, although direct sequels and Fable is the definition of disappointment and broken promises.

Katamari Damacy is the only real stand out for me. Haven't played the others.

Not a relevant year.

The biggest thing that stands out about 2004 for me is the fact that 3 new engines came out. idtech 4, Cryengine, and Source all came out that year and really blew me away. Doom 3's lighting, Cryengine's jungle, and Source's facial animations were all really impressive at the time.

But when it comes to games, I much prefer 1998.

I have to say I don't see 2004 as just a big a year as 1998 and 2001. I'm not at the computer but I would compare games from those 2 years.

On your list only Metal Gear Solid 3 and San Andreas had a big impact on me. Though of course Half Life 2, Halo 2 and World of Warcraft were generally big releases.

That said 2004 is one of the biggest gaming years after 1998, 2001 and arguably 2007.

I hear there is a pretty substantial group of gamers who are actively not remembering what games came out in 2004.

It 's a bit of an underground movement, but definitely gaining some traction in the mainstream media.

Maybe you didnt like some (or most) of the games on the list, but calling it "not a relevant year" is borderline ignorant.

It seems like an impressive list at first but I would only consider revisiting a couple of those games.

I never base my enjoyment or appreciation of games based on if the game in question is a new IP or sequel.

Shit talks the list.

Ignores Battlefront, one of the best games on the list.

Ok then.
