LTTP Soul Bubbles | adjust for inflation

(Psst: why not listen to a track from the game's lush OST while reading this thread?)

In browsing older DS game recommendation threads on GAF (yes, I have too much time on my hands), one game I kept coming across was Soul Bubbles. I wasn't sure if it was my kind of thing, and--I wasn't really sure what exactly the game was. I knew it was some kind of bubble-based platform (?) puzzler, but I wasn't sure how arcade-y it was or if it was more level-based, and how much content it had to offer. I knew it was supposed to be good, though, and I knew it had this unusual and charming disclaimer:

NTR-P-YLEE-010.jpg

The game was published by Eidos and made by developer Mekensleep, who I believe has not yet released any other games. Soul Bubbles came out in 2008 but call me an optimist, because I'd love to see more games from this developer, and I still hope we will.

This game is just terrifically designed, and elegantly simple. You play as a little spirit dude, and he's got some souls to herd. This is where the titular soul bubbles come in. You can create, split, and pop bubbles. If you're going for 100%, you want to bring all seven souls in each level to their destination. You'll want to grab every bit of stardust (think coins in a Mario game) and track down each hidden calabash (similar to a puzzle piece in a DKC game). There are dozens of levels, each of which takes a solid 6 to 30 minutes to fully complete. Average level is maybe 9 minutes or so, which means this is a great game to just pull out and play for a bit when you want a relaxing break.

NTR-P-YLEE-047.jpg

Like the Mario games we all laud, what's great about this game is the sheer volume of ideas it throws at you without each new concept never overstaying its welcome. The game gradually throws new and more complex mechanics at you: wind to struggle against (you have a limited amount of breath to blow before losing steam for a moment), icy environs to limit your bubbles' gravity, gaseous emissions to sink and fall when encircled in a bubble, and much more.

NTR-P-YLEE-060.jpg

One thing I absolutely loved about this game is the plethora of unusual settings you're taken to. Each has its own subtle spiritual tie, whether it be to Aboriginal lands or Tibetan mountaintops. These are new and different kinds of places for games to visit, and the relaxing OST and pitch-perfect touchscreen controls make you feel like a conductor with your stylus, harmonizing a metaphysical orchestra.

NTR-P-YLEE-045.jpg

This is a relaxing game, but not a painfully easy one by any stretch. Completing the game in its entirety will require some thoughtful playing. I was tempted to consult a guide several times (I did end up checking one at the very end of the game for one particularly tricky calabash). It's not a stressful game by any means, so when you're faced with some of its more brutal challenges they feel suitably ultra hard, more than they might otherwise. On the whole, though, it's a breezy and whimsical escapist kind of game, the kind some kid will come across in a retro game store one day and think, oh hey, Soul Bubbles. This looks neat. Maybe I'll give it a shot. And if he does, he'll be playing one of the best games on the DS. So I recommend you give a shout to your own inner child, and pick up this game sometime for a jaunt into the spiritual world of Soul Bubbles.

P.S. the game is dirt cheap:

Fantastic game. This and Glory Days 2 were both great little curveballs that Eidos published on DS.

I love the bonus unlockable content in Soul Bubbles!

Love this game! It's easily in my top 5 DS games. Been wanting a sequel ever since. Don't know what's become of Mekensleep, but I hope they come back and make a 3DS game at some point.

Not to distract from the topic at hand, but the only thing I'm familiar with about Soul Bubbles is a vague recollection that there was some kind of astroturfing conspiracy regarding a certain vehement reviewer who was linked to the game or its publisher. I did some Google searching but wasn't able to find anything but I'm also sick so my Google-fu is weak. if someone knows what I'm referring to please validate my pathetic existence as my bowels churn mercilessly inside of me to no end.

I don't know anything about a review, but I do remember some Eidos people tried to astroturf a GOTY poll run by Hyper, an Aussie game mag, and got caught out pretty quickly.

Ah, that's crazy. Anyway, hope you feel better, Hycran!

Anybody know about the Japanese localisation?

They changed the main character sprite, but it seems to me the content was different too (?)

Did the smartphone version ever come out?

From what I could find out online, it was just the sprite that changed. Where did you see about different content?

Was this anything like Bubble Ghost?

According to the Bubble Ghost wiki, that concept was the inspiration for Soul Bubbles (there's no citation, though).

Bubble Ghost was a clear inspiration but they're different styles of game; Soul Bubbles is more of a puzzle/exploration game, kinda like LocoRoco or something. That's my biggest beef, really--it's so easy and fun to move and manipulate the bubble but it's really laid back and not especially challenging as an action game.

It has been tweaked here and there a little, but the tweaks are mostly minor. The final calabash was made a little less crazy to find through less subtle hints. It also include multiple save slots and the number of calabashes required to reach Agartha is higher to enforce player playing more of the game before feeling like they reached the final level. The closer you can get to "new content" is playing the demo ROM which is a sort of new level mixing things from multiple levels of the main game.

Yes and no, I knew about Bubble Ghost because I played it as a kid but it wasn't something we really had in mind when making Soul Bubbles, other than referring to it a couple times during discussions. It is a rather loose inspiration

Amazing game and the devs were great too.

Some levels were frustrating though like the snow ones... keeping the pace sliding the stylus in every direction on the touch screen was hard as hell.

Hey, thanks for reading the thread and responding! That's awesome. Where can I find the demo ROM? Also, that final calabash was the only one I had to look up. I did feel very accomplished figuring out the rest of the final Agartha level on my own, though, especially needing to pop and re-inflate the bubbles in time to catch the water and gas as they passed through the sharp tree branches. :)

Ah man, those snow levels were tough but I adored them. They reminded me of a few of my favorite snow levels in gaming, from Yoshi's Island, Starfy DS, and Kirby's Epic Yarn:

There are really no good screens of the Kirby level but here's a video of it:

(I couldn't find a pic of the Starfy level, either, but he gets rolled into a giant snowball and it's a lot of fun.)

This game is amazing!!!

I loved how clever it is, and frankly, despite the cute setting, it can get challenging at times.

The music was great on the icy levels :)

I remember there was a thread here back when this came out where someone praised this game like he'd discovered the meaning of life within it. Does anyone have a link to that? I'm very sure it was a very nice writeup. I should play it sometime.

I am afraid the demos are not available anymore via Nintendo Channel.
There is a copy here if you have a way to run that on a DS or emulator (not sure how it behave with emulators) http://www.miracleworld.net/SoulBubbles/Demo/

There's a few secrets that I've been meaning to publish for a while, I put them on this website, including a debug mode.

Haha yes, that thread was one of the reasons I got the game:

The year this game came out I bought a copy of it for every member of my staff that Christmas. I doubt any of them played it but you know what? I don't care. I did, and maybe they'll discover it one day. Or one of their children will. Or who knows. Still, I'd do anything to wake Mekensleep back up.

You're a great boss. (All of your employees had a DS? That's rad.)

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I just now discovered that secret area in the bonus level thanks to this thread 😧

Haha! I see you bumping this :p

I just noticed the image of the game says "Only at Toys'R'Us"? Was this exclusive to that chain? That's probably why I've never heard of Soul Bubbles until Max mentioned it

I love this game so much. I think I'll have to replay it very soon.

I guess the mobile adaptation is dead in the water after all these years, no?

Would have loved to revisit the game (out experience a new one) on my phone.

Hah, totally missed this back when you posted. Yup, they sure did (and do!).

In the US it was, yeah. And you posting that gave me flashbacks to the line in the giant Times Square store where I bought my gift copies of it. Took around 5 hours, snaked through the entire humongous place... but that's what I get for waiting until the week before Christmas. I actually have pictures of it somewhere, it was that crazy.
