Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I installed my MSI Gaming 970 last night and the performance is good, as expected. I absolutely love the fact that the fans don't kick in until you start playing a game as I had a Gigabyte Windforce before and the fans, while relatively quiet, were definitely audible even at idle. I do think the card gets a bit too hot before the fans kick in during games, so I'll probably go in and set up my own fan profile at some point.

However, I was very concerned about coil whine after all the reports, and sure enough, this card does buzz under load, the intensity of which depends on what's onscreen at the time. Fortunately, you can really only hear it if you are within a couple feet of the case. This PC is in the living room and a good 6 feet from any seating position so I don't think it's going to be an issue. While actually playing games I never heard it once, so I'm not going to return it or anything unless I play something that makes it audible for some reason. I'll put it through the paces this weekend.

Just tested Shadow of Mordor on the 970 GTX. Runs very well at (almost all) Ultra settings! Only a few framerate dips here and there.

Glad to hear that is the case! I was nervous that 2x 970s wouldn't be able to max it out. Thanks for the confirmation Thorgi!

Whelp just placed an order for a 970. It's about damn time I replaced my 470s lol. Gaf I don't think I'm ready for this....:p

Just ordered an EVGA Superclocked 970 with the ACX 2.0 Cooler from Newegg! That one is supposed to be ok, right? It's the ACX 1.0's that were having all the issues, right?

It's probably the least desirable of all the cards currently. Has the most potential for coil whine and runs the hottest.
Got info on this? I call shenanigans. I don't think the anecdotes are anything to go by in this case.

I bought the ACX 1.0 SC for a friend. Was over at his place last weekend, and I'd give the card a thumbs up. I agree in that I would buy the ASUS, MSI, and GB before it because they are superior options, but it's not loud. It's more quiet than other reference cards, and I'd say it's more desireable than Zotac, especially with the new BIOS update that changes the fan curve.

Newegg Premiere is a joke though. :/ It said I could sign up for a free 30-day trial and get my $7 of shipping for free. Did so, it ended up just charging me the full price of $50 for a year membership, AND charged me $7 for shipping. On chat with support right now, trying to get it resolved.

Just going by the reviews and power specs for the boards. Anecdotally we've seen a few more EVGA unsatisfied customers in this thread.

The differences between the cards all seem so minuscule to be honest but if you're going to choose one, EVGA in its current state would be at the bottom of my list. I'd hold out for the ACX 2.0 if I was getting an EVGA.

Amazon just updated my delivery estimate on the Gigabyte G1 980. Says October 21st now.

Not too bad. I think Fry's has a 30 day return policy so I'll probably return it and get the G1. If they won't accept it back for some reason, guess I'm going SLI.

If you're new to overclocking, don't go higher than that. Try and see how much it improves your clocks and raises your temps before you go any further.

Would an EVGA 980 Classified be better? Never had an EVGA card before, but I heard good things about them, especially the classified series. But I'm not sure how would the classified version compared to the Gigabyte G1

psu, CPU and mobo model?

I'm getting an rma for the same card, same buzzing. I'm concerned that I'll just get a new card that will buzz all the same . Not fun at all.

Benchmarked Shadow of Mordor at 2560x1440 with my 980 (1371MHz core)

And here at 2048x1152 (the game doesn't let me choose 1920x1080)

Is this running on Medium, High, Ultra (with Ultra textures installed)?

SSAA, AA, Shadow detail? Sorry I am just curious...

Here's my benchmark, running at 1920x1080 on one 970 GTX, with almost all of the settings pumped as high as they can go.

I just ordered the Gigabyte GTX 970 on Newegg. I've been checking the site every 30 mins or so for days now and finally the "add to cart" button appeared, i quickly ordered and it went through, but apparently there are no more since when i click "add to cart" now, I get an error.

I wanted to come here and tell GAF that they were in stock , but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. I just hope that the card I just bought isn't somebody's open box return cause that would be messed up.

EDIT: Apparently they're still in stock on Newegg's eBay store: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIGABYTE-GV-N970G1-GAMING-4GD-GeForce-GTX-970-4GB-256-Bit-GDDR5-PCI-Express-3-0-/381007492063 So go go go if you want one.

Still nothing, this is becoming painful. I have Amazon money and so can't even spend anywhere else if I wanted to, not that I really want to do that.

God damn it. It's been in stock since around noon and went out of stock at 1. I refreshed the stock page at 1:10 and almost had a heart attack when I saw that it had just gone out of stock minutes before. A whole hour and I missed it. Generally I've been checking it every half hour for 6 days but I cant always do that when I'm at work obviously so I let an hour slip by.

Ive got newegg set up to email alert me when stock is available, and I'm also using a site that is supposed to pop up when stock is available. But it didnt. And I didnt feel my phone buzz from the email.

I am so damn disappointed. I want to get this thing before Alien Isolation. If only Newegg hadnt screwed me by telling me it would be faster to refund rather than replace since they had stock, and then have no stock by the end of the conversation.

It's been a long time since I've used an Nvidia card and I definitely wasn't using HDMI at the time. Maybe someone can help me out. I switch between a monitor in my computer room (display port) and my TV in my living room (HDMI via cat6 run behind the wall). With my 7970 I could set it up so when I was using the HDMI display, it would automatically switch to HDMI audio and when I switched back to my monitor it would fall back to my speakers or headphones. With my GTX 970, it doesn't seem to automatically go back to HDMI audio when I switch. It's kind of random, sometimes it will but only if I switch back relatively quickly. Anyone have experience with a similar setup? As it is now, I have to manually set the HDMI audio as the default almost every time I switch.

Classified cards are usually good, but at the moment there is no word on release date or price.

The Gigabyte G1 is the best 980 out currently. They specifically mention they bin their GPUs to guarantee the highest overclocks. It's also got a beefy PCB and amazing cooler. Have you seen Linus' video of it?

Anyone used or heard of someone using the Kraken G10 on a 970/980?

My roommate is planning to do this with a 980 and I'm tempted to myself. There's only reference 980s available around here so even if I wanted one I'd be looking into an aftermarket cooler.

For now, still waiting for the Strix 970 to come in.

Yup, the cards are fine. We had more reports on coil whine concerning MSI and Gigabyte in this thread by now.

Asus 970 strix installed and working great save for flickering through an hdmi splitter to my panny plasma. Straight through to the tv works fine. Hdmi splitter us one of those kinivo jobs if anyone is interested.

I have an Asus VG248QE as monitor. Which output should I use from the GTX970?

HDMI, Display port or DVI? Which is the best option or does it not matter?

Currently using DVI, since I had that cable to my previous GPU.

Lord I wish I sold my GTX 670 right before these cards came out. My MSI GTX 670 power edition OC is in perfect condition and I'm having no success on Gumtree at £90. These cards were still able to go for like £130 even just after the Maxwell launch sigh. I'd like to avoid eBay because of the killer fees.

Surprised at that. Still a potent card.

Display port offers the highest resolution. Otherwise use dual link dvi

Standard DVI will not output 120/144Hz at 1080p, so definitely use either DP or the Dual Link DVI cable that came with the monitor.
