Do you see Titanfall or Destiny as huge FPS franchises by the end of this gen?

A buddy and I were talking about this yesterday, and had differing opinions.

Do you foresee either of those games as huge FPS franchises by the end of this gen?
I'm talking on the level of Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc..

For some reason, I can't. If anything, I can maybe see Destiny being there...simply because of Bungie's history. But Titanfall, I just don't see it for some reason. It seemed to die off pretty quickly after launch, and I just can't see a Titanfall 2 or 3 or 4 bringing people back in numbers...regardless if it stays exclusive or goes multi-plat.

Discuss amongst yourselves..

Destiny maybe, I think TF will continue to be very successful but maybe not to CoD levels. imo the exclusivity really hurt the brand - if EA wanted it to be the next CoD, they should've realised that it needs to be on more than 3 platforms.

I think for Titanfall to grow as a franchise, it needs to distance itself further from its Call of Duty roots. In many ways, it definitely felt like "the fresh new thing in MP shooters", but it also felt held back by its very foundation.

Both yes

Destiny has people by the balls already and its not even a very good game right now. When they get a chance to iterate on all the flaws it will be a monster.

Titanfall will go multi-platform and the amount of stuff they can iterate on in that game is pretty unreal. It's going to be an extremely fun and popular FPS come sequel time.

Destiny 100%. I think people underestimate the game and its potential.

Titanfall is hard to say at this point, depends on the sequel and if it's on both platforms.

No, they're both done - neither will gain legions of new fans. They will scrape by with the few devotees that stick with them.

Only because the marketing will refuse to let them fail. Neither would be as big without the massive amount of marketing they will get.

Titanfall must drop Xbox exclusivity.

Distiny has a strong fundation, the gameplay is really good and fun, the story, balance and content suck donkey balls.

Both could be pretty big, but a lot of things can happen in 6 years.

I don't know that I see either of them being that big by the end of the gen.

I loved Titanfall but it really has cooled off quickly. A second, more robust game could be great though. We'll see. A multiplatform Titanfall 2 could do really well if they do it right though.

Destiny though...I think a lot of people feel really burned by it. Honestly I see Titanfall 2 as having more of a shot in the future than Destiny 2. For the most part I don't think people felt "burned" by Titanfall, they just want it on their platform for the sequel. With Destiny I'm seeing a lot of people be much more straight up negative about the game.

Respawn just got a hot cash injection after Titanfall, so hopefully theyll go all in for Titanfall 2 and really make it happen. Destiny is already there for me, and my massive addiction lends a bit to bias

Destiny will, its a game built off of building from the foundation. Its just a matter of can bungie actually build some that isnt so bare bones

Titanfall is kind of a unknown. Even when it goes multiplatform. It honestly depends on how good the sequel is.

Destiny has SO much potential. If they can polish off its flaws with future expansions/sequels and not be too obnoxious with typical Acti-greed, I could totally see the franchise being the face of the generation.

On the level of call of duty circa 360?

No.

But I also think that by the end of this gen Call of Duty will no longer be anywhere near that big either.

They are all fighting over the same audience without significantly expanding the market.

Destiny probably will. It's an endless opportunity with these space games, there's a lot they can do to renew interest, and it's not like they don't have the budget now.

Titanfall... depends on how successful the second is. If it's on PS4 and it is good, then yeah I think it'll take off and become highly mainstream.

Destiny, totally.

Titanfall's legacy depends entirely on whatever Titanfall 2 ends up being. Shelf life was too short for the first one. They need to think bigger for the sequel.

Technically, the OP mentioned Halo. To be as big as Halo, one does not need to remove console exclusivity, even though it certainly appears they are going to remove it in future titles.

Destiny yes. I think there's an amazing base of art, lore, and fun gameplay, but Bungie has to fix the story, loot, and social aspects. They'll get it right even if it takes Destiny 2.

Titanfall on the other hand might have bigger issues. They dont have the lore or art built anywhere near as much, and are a realativly small studio. A single player (or hybridized Bloodborne style campaign) would be a good step, but with the speed and repetitiveness of the core gameplay I'm not sure it can be a heavy hitter. Maybe if they spend a lot of time on game mechanics, and are willing to make large changes.

lol Destiny had a huge opening. might pull even more people in once the loot system gets patched and even more features are added. "scrape by" is hilarious.

Destiny is totally going to be a mainstay unfornately
Titanfall will need to go for something more unique in it's sequel if it wants a shot at becoming another mainstay in the FPS market.

By the end of this gen probably both will be big franchises. The sequels will be much improved, no cross-gen requirement holding them back and there's load of feedback they can listen to in order to make some quick and effective improvements.

Destiny for sure. Titanfall, depends on where they go from here. It still has a chance but really depends on decisions made going forward.

Yes for both...

Add a solid single player experience to titanfall and it is GOTY. I'm assuming a sequel will do just that. Not to mention there is legions of PS only players who have yet to have a go with it but are probably very interested based on the buzz it recieved on Xbox.

Destiny has a great foundation to build off and if bungie can apply some of the feedback from the community to improve the experience it will be around for a while.

Destiny likely. Titanfall, not likely unless it goes multiplat and they don't skim on the content for the sequel.

I really, really REALLY want Destiny is be better.

Double edge sword with it selling well though

On one hand, we're DEFINITELY getting a sequel.

On the other hand, Bungie thinks that what they released was acceptable and good god it was not.

Yes, I do. As it is right now, there's much more potential in Destiny. Titanfall needs to evolve graphically and maybe a good writer could do something with the story.

Destiny very likely. I would be surprised if it didn't turn out to be a huge blockbuster series.

Titanfall not so much. Even if it drops its exclusivity I doubt it will do huge numbers. The gameplay is absolutely brilliant and a breath of fresh air but unfortunately it is too complex to appeal to the masses. I think COD AW will prove this assertion to be true. People like to play games they are comfortable with.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Destiny has the potential for sure. I doubt the current game will ever be able to fulfill the promise Bungie was presenting, but since they are pretty much guaranteed to be making a sequel, it is possible they will take the criticisms to heart and next time deliver a really amazing experience.

Probably, but I would honestly just rather have a traditional FPS with all the standard modes. (Solid campaign, horde co-op, good mp)

Destiny has been a profound disappointment. I'm a little shocked that GAF is so easily supporting this dishonest, unfinished mess.

I think Titanfall will influence alot of games and will be copied by studios who will take the time to do the formula better. But I think Titanfall itself is a lukewarm IP as it is.

By the balls is perhaps a slight exaggeration. I was in Game earlier and they had three shelves full of pre-owned Destiny copies. It was crazy.

Looks like CEX is also getting swamped with copies too.

They're both franchise-worthy games with limited content for their first iterations. It's really up to the sequels to both these to push them into big franchises, kinda like Assassin's Creed last year. First game shows the potential, the second game delivers. Hopefully.

I really hope for a good Titanfall 2 for all consoles and PC. Destiny 2 has every chance of becoming awesome. I doubt Activision&Bungie is going to leave it to die. Personally I like what I'm playing but I wouldn't be surprised if we see a A Realm Reborn-treatment to the MMO aspects.

Destiny probably but i cant see Titanfall getting on CoD lvls. Game was fun but it didnt "catch" me like Destiny did.
EA will probably fuck Titanfall up like they did with Battlefield

Titanfall, no. Game was awesome, but I only played it for about 2 weeks, just stopped caring after that.

I'm optimistic for both. Destiny's world and lore will only be improved with more content. Titanfall fell victim to the exclusivity bullshit that cripples all but a few Nintendo titles. It will get a real shot in the arm once it goes multiplat.

Destiny yes, it is all ready (first week sales for new IP)

Plus the mechanics are fine, they can fix their shortfalls for Destiny 2.

Titanfall...remains to be seen. Not a good sign EA never released any sales numbers, Create a good SP campaign though and I hope it does well,

I think Titanfall will make a bigger splash in the long run. Titanfall just feels great. Titanfall was really hindered by an old ass engine and a lack of content. If you put a proper campaign and build on the foundation that titanfall set than you can have a huge franchise. I think destiny will be big but I don't care for it much at all so I'm biased. I'm not really sure what destiny is trying to be.

I can see huge potential with Destiny.

Never played Titanfall though, so I can't judge. Don't know if I ever will play it, since I'm more toward the semi-MMORPG/looting game that is Destiny. I see Titanfall more like COD with giant mechs, the end.

Titanfall 2 needs to totally over-deliver. They basically need to go from "CoD" to "CoD 4" in one iteration. There are too many new games coming out for them to rest on their laurels and assume gamers are going to wait for them to slowly get it right.

As for Destiny 2, I really have no interest. Completely assuming it's going to be anything like what is released now it is a pass for me. The game needs to be completely gutted and completely renovated in my opinion, which I doubt will happen. They seem to think that the game is wonderful as-is and tout their massive sales as a pat on the back. I think the game has potential to be great... the perfect gunplay and feel of the game, at the very least has me interested in what they do with the sequel, but I am absolutely not on board with the current game and will not be preordering a sequel or even day one unless I get my hands-on, after release and reviews.

I'm a bit more optimistic for Titanfall 2 overall game-wise, but Destiny will probably move more units I think, with the help of Activision/Sony.
