NICE

I didn't get an email with a Steam key :(

I sent a message to Heart Machine on Kickstarter. Hopefully I hear back soon because I have the day off today.

Have you checked your humble bundle account library?

The game's crashing for me as soon as press anything at the title screen D: I get the following error:

Code:
___________________________________________
############################################################################################
FATAL ERROR in Vertex Shader compilation
ShaderName: shd_CharPaletteSwap

D3DXCompile failed - result

at gml_Script_shader_set_paletteSwap
############################################################################################
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
stack frame is
gml_Script_shader_set_paletteSwap (line 0)
gml_Object_char_Draw_0

It worked fine for me last night on my home PC, but not on my laptop today.. going to hit the devs up.

Was preview build access a special reward tier? I never received an email nor do I have the game in my Humble account.

Edit: Oh yeah, it totally was. Oh well.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
Can the dash slash reflect bullets? Ive used it during the arena to make space between me and the mooks, but i never went up against gunners.

Also, has anyone else been able to spook some of the enemies by killing off most of their allies?

So if I never contributed to the kickstarter, never pre-ordered or did anything that warranted me getting access to this preview build, how could I play this right now

Know someone that did all that that doesnt want their steam code

wait this game is not 60fps? is this just for beta or something that will be in the final version as well?

I don't know what the dev is planning but I can tell you that the framerate is low. 30 at most, maybe less.

Obviously, sprite animation will be below 60 FPS. I can't think of a good reason why the camera scrolling and character movement are so choppy, however.

Try going to their website and see if you can get a key by pre-ordering it.

You'd have to pre-order off their website to be able to play it right now, that's the only thing I know.

Unless if someone somehow has 2 steam keys. Or if they're doing a giveaway.

I felt like I was taking my time and only got 4 of the diamonds lol. I've got work to do. I'm loving it. It's only as difficult as you choose to make it so far; If you want to move gracefully or do speed + no hit runs, that's a whole other story.

A "New Game +" run takes me about 10 minutes to finish from the intro screen to the return elevator switch at the end. That's with the
Crossbow? type
weapon and
the metroid bombs
.

It's a lot of fun but I need to delete my save so I can do a fresh run and see how long that takes.

Man I thought this was out already. Oh well, it looks great still. Love the style, and the combat impressions seem to be good.

What is this "Below" game mentioned on page 1?

IIRC on their last stream they confirmed that it was 30fps. Not sure why it isn't 60fps. Edit: Is there any way to play in a window or at a lower resolution? Edit: NVM! I forgot about alt+enter.

You can Alt + Enter to put it in Windowed mode. Don't think you can change the size of the window though.

The framerate thing is kinda why I've not really played much of this yet. Fraps reads a solid 30fps at all times, but the way the camera moves feels quite choppy (not that 30fps wouldn't be kinda choppy for a game like this anyway), and the control doesn't feel very snappy, as if there's some input lag at play.

I made a quick GIF to demonstrate, hopefully someone who knows about this stuff can tell me if it looks like a normal amount of lag or not:

Played for about 20 minutes yesterday, it seems really cool - the aesthetic and the background music really adds to the atmosphere and ambience. Couple of things I didn't like as much, the perspective can look very weird and I ended up falling down the long chute near the start and dying because I couldn't tell it's actually empty space, and the animation does seem choppy (although I was playing on a non- gaming laptop). Feels like it really could have done with being 60fps.

Other than that, I've barely scratched the surface of it, and I'll get back to playing it properly later (I didn't even play with a mouse yesterday).

PC version is capped at 30fps? What?

It's true. I never even considered that it wouldn't run at 60. Just figured the low framerate in videos was due to Youtube's 30 FPS limit.

I'm not getting that latency.

I agree about the camera movement being choppy but that might just be down to the 30 FPS thing.

Hopefully it's an early technical issue and not some assbackwards decision. 2D games should always be 60fps.

I just assumed 30 fps was a beta thing. If the final version is not 60 that's an insanely bad mistake. It makes no sense to make this stylish art and then shit all over it with a low frame rate.

The 30fps is killing me. The game is supposed to have fast paced combat, but the decision to make it 30fps really makes the controls feel sluggish. Kind of a weird decision.

You FPS guys are crazy for nothing.

Anyway, game's awesome. Loving the atmosphere and soundtrack Got all chips and diamonds and weapons. There doesn't seem to be an end to the demo, right? Once you collect everything you can just run around and around?

30 FPS negatively affects action games and it's especially noticable in 2D games. I'm not sitting here with FRAPS or anything. It's obvious from the first instant you move your character.

It's a shame that it's happening here since everything else is so lovely.

If there is an end, I haven't found it either.

It negatively affect action games that are designed to play at 60fps only. That's very obviously not the case for this one, there are ample buffers for every action you can take and everything moves at a reasonable pace.

Negatively effects all games and genres. There's no type of game that isn't improved by 60fps.

60fps improves everything, from the way games look visually to how responsive they are technically. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's definitely disappointing particularly considering this is not the sort of graphics card-pushing game that should require a limitation like that.

So yeah, disappointed.

Agreed. But I'm a lot more tolerant of it in certain genres. Adventure games and turn-based RPGs, for example.

Disregarding character controls, the 30 FPS thing really hurts Hyper Light Drifter's camera. It stutters all over the place. I hope it's just a beta thing.
