iOS Gaming October 2014: We didn't even know this was releasing on iOS

I have so many games trying to install/sync with my iphone my itunes on pc is lagging extremely badly, I cant tell if this is my pc or the phone or a mixture of both

can I make a purchase bought on a i device from ipad etc, automatically download on the pc client?

also is there a way to transfer apps that were on pc already, install to an ios device all at once, rather than go down a long tedious list clicking install all the time then sync. I have hundreds of apps to sync and its evenmaking itunes itself lag with me going down that list.

  • If you're logged in to the same Apple IDs on your iOS device and iTunes then apps you download on your device should download on your PC as well if iTunes is open. They will be added to your App Library regardless regardless.
  • Vice versa if you download an app in iTunes it can download automatically on your iOS device as well at the same time. On your iOS device there's a setting to turn that under Settings > iTunes & App Store.

is this normal then?

Yeah unfortunately the Windows version of iTunes is a real resource hog. iTunes 12 is coming out soon which might improve the situation (it's supposedly a re-write of the code base, release coinciding with the new Mac OS Yosemite).
Will probably still be a resource hog on Windows.

Fortunately you can manage/sync everything to iCloud and not necessarily use iTunes at all with your iOS device.

Just a heads up for people, in case someone is dumb as much as me (which I doubt).

So...I'm in Chapter 6 of The Banner Saga (which is utterly awesome, possibly one of the best games I ever played), things are apparently wrapping up, etc...etc....

I JUST discovered (I know...I know...) that you assign points to the various skills.....and I have TONS to assign.
For some reason....I just promoted characters never noticing the 'skill' points part...basically playing the whole game with level 1 characters.....assigned skills and breezed through some new challenges.

So...do not forget to do that (there are two new buttons that appear in the lower right part of the screen AFTER promoting). :)

Yes.
On Windows.

ugh, thanks everyone. I didnt state this last night but it got to the point were 27 games couldnt transfer over properly, and I was forced to restart the phone and pc :/ they are on the phonenow though, somehow I now need to play over 200 ios games/demos etc XD

SO, i've never had both an ipad and an iphone before.. If i download, say, a universal game on my ipad, and play for a bit, can i download the same game for iphone and continue from my last save i made on my ipad? Sorry for the shitty description, but i think you might be able to comprehend my jibberish. English isn't my native language.

Not actually that important

Yes, if it has could sync/saves.

Okay, got it. Would you say a majority of the universal games today support cloud saves?

Unfortunately not.
Some devs support it out of the bat, perfectly, even at first try.
Some devs do not, some devs struggle in supporting it properly even after years trying.

It's a mystery.

When it's properly supported, it's really cool.
I wish Apple forced devs to support it, especially in long or big-footprint games (syncing saves between devices is just one feature, the other one being able to delete a game to make space, reinstalling it months later and starting where you left).

is there a list of what games do support it?

I don't really know, but I think it isn't used universally because it's a pain to implement for developers for whatever reason.

Not sure. But for games featured in the OPs I try to have the Cloud icon on the ones that do. There are many ways one could do cloud saves on iOS, via iCloud, Facebook cloud space or any number of homemade ways. The Angry Birds games for example use Rovios own account system. EA uses Origin in some titles to do it. Etc.

I really wish more developers took the time to invest in it.

can anyone here tell me if dragon quest 8 works well on an iphone 6 or if I should just save my money?

This. I am intrigued by trying out a dragon quest game and just got my 6; so I can't stop touching it. Perfect time for playing games.

AFAIK, the port is a bit sloppy and runs choppy on anything. You can see zefah's impressions here and here.

Dragon Quest IV is generally seen to be very good as well, but without the technical issues in VIII, so perhaps consider that (though I have no idea about if it needs any updates for iPhone 6 specifically).

Dragon Quest 8 works on Iphone 6 without problems. Mind you, I only played for 20 minutes. After that i discovered that my screen is not flush with the metal frame and returned it. Now i'm waiting for a replacement :(

Fun free release:
Daddy Long Legs
https://appsto.re/us/0v0_1.i
Take “control” over a little, sneaky and hairy creature. Put one leg in front of the other and try not to fall.
The goal of Daddy Long Legs is very simple, walk as far as you can. But, with legs five times longer than the rest of your body, walking is no easy task. Simply tap the screen to change leg and watch as Daddy Long Legs stumbles across the screen. Daddy Long Legs is for gamers that like a hard challenge and a cheap laugh. The game is is weirdly rewarding and it just feels fabulous every time you set that new record.

It's a QWOP-like game, but has a charm that QWOP doesn't, due to the animations of the clumsy spindly creature you're trying to make walk

Neat so far, but there are some small design issues I have with it. I wish if when you hit the "show replay" button, it actually showed your replay before giving you the option to upload it. As it is now, it should say "share replay." Won't stop me from playing, though!

Hey GAF,

Would appreciate some helpful feedback (and ratings, if you can!) on a release I helped work on - first release by a new indie outfit - which just went up on the App Store (it's free / ad-supported): Raccoon Sushi Chef.

I guess it's an endless runner type, but you're supposed to focus on two separate sushi conveyors on either side of the screen, and the game mixes up the speeds and what you're looking for to keep you on your toes, and adds a few power-ups. Would appreciate any thoughts on:

1 - Difficulty? Tried to find a balance between easy initial difficulty and harder / faster speeds the further you last, while not making things impossible (the game caps the max. speed). The last hi-score achievement requires a score of 10,000, and I haven't hit it but I've gotten close, but I'm not sure how others will fare.

2 - Suggestions for mixing up / improving the gameplay - open to updates, but hearing how the game could be more fun / things that were overlooked is always helpful.

Thanks so much GAF!

Has anyone ever figured out if there's a way to see ALL app bundles? Really annoying that it's one of the better new features of iOS 8, but any lists they make are far from complete. Apple really should have implemented a category for bundles.

Also, I know they fixed the issue of showing prices for bundles you've already "completed" but is it up to the dev on whether or not they give a discount on bundles where you already purchased some of the apps?

Seems to work on some but not others.

Playing Inferno 2...oh my god...easily the Radiangames' best game....maybe the best shooter to ever come to IOS!!!!

The music is just wow, so good, and you have so many options and skills to use!!!

Homing rockets, spread shot, bouncing bullets, slow motion, upgrades for every weapon and to your ship's armor, speed, and more. So many choices and you can switch between weapons on the fly!!!

The game is just a visual spectacle! Hordes of enemies, the explosions of color and neon blasts, the screen filling chaos as enemies and bullets converge. It's so beautiful!!!

It's really challenging too...you really need to plan ahead, and watch for choke points and use the best weapons at the best times to succeed.

So good...$3 is a steal for the amount of content here!!!

Are you talking about this?
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/inferno-2/id888166669?mt=8

There are so many games out there with similar names, I love your game posts but OMG including app store links would make me love them mucho mucho more.

I believe someone already posted the App Store link earlier in the thread. And btw those impressions were more of a tongue in cheek response to a post. Here's the link to my full impressions:

Oh. Sorry. Derp. It's always a wee bit frustrating when people talk about a great iOS game but don't include app store link. App store searches can be really shit.
Tell me about it. Really wish Apple would take a page from Steam's book. You can really narrow down search parameters there. Searching for games on the App Store just sucks

LOL. If you had to use Google Play, you'd think differently. The App Store's searches are MILES above Google Play's. And that's sad considering ...well...it's freakin' Google!

I absolutely deplore GP when it comes to searching for games.

iOS 8 store search seems improved over previous iterations at least. It seems to aggregate results according to popularity a lot better (I assume you need the location services active for this to work proper). Also yeah Google Play is horrendous by comparison.

Gonna add Inferno 2 and Long Legs to the OP later today.

Did anyone try out that Spirit of Spring game?

I haven't really played anything on iOS besides rhythm games in the past year or so, so question - any good JRPGish games released recently? I'd exclude ports since I don't want to buy an SE game for like $15 at the moment but maybe there is a port besides those.

Well, there really aren't that many JRPGs even if you include ports that come out (maybe a dozen?) a year, unless you want to buy bad RPG-maker looking games for $9 from whatever that company that has a dozen or more of them is, so excluding ports probably brings you extremely close to 0 I'd guess. Banner Saga just came out though, and it's a story focused RPG with tactical battles, and well reviewed, not really JRPGish though.
