Saw Spirits of Spring was on sale for $1.99. I let this one pass me by. Thoughts from anyone who's played it?

Ugh, I understand. Monument Valley is my favourite iOS game this year, but my most played would either be Deer Hunter '14 or, gulp, 'Motor World'. I won't ever admit to playing Motor World again though, and this post is primed to self-destruct.

I'd never heard of Motor World before but it looks amazing. Time to download...

Yeah, I think so. I wouldn't keep playing 'em if I wasn't. It's easy to deal with freemium limits when you're only picking a game up for five minutes at a time.

I do feel guilty pressing 'Motor World' when I've got the Phoenix Wright trilogy and Ghost Trick sitting right next to it though.

Same, I got a good 30-40 games on my iPhone. Good games, and all I load up, almost every hour, is Boom Beach.

Anyone installed iTunes 12? The thing is broken, no longer shows info on the Apps Updates so I no longer know what is new, and they removed the side bar which I loved and left a horrible design instead. Seriously considering going back to a previous version :(

Huh? They gave it an 8. One reason I was looking at it

An 8? I thought it was a 6... mind blown... my bad.

Good for you I guess.

It will be free to play, with an option to buy an IAP that removes the energy system entirely making it premium-ish (I can assure most of the other IAP are basically cheats). Wish Adventure Xpress did this. Its a win-win situation for both customers and developers. You guys are in for a gaming treat with Puzzle to the Center of the Earth (and Gauntlet Revenge also).

It's really good. Lots of good content and secrets
Wait, were you beta testers or was it soft launched and I didn't know?

Alpha trailer for Crashlands, upcoming survival/exploration game from Butterscotch Shenagians

The Quadropus Rampage fan in me is looking forward to this new game.

Shows App Update info for me..
Also the Sidebar is still available, use the "Playlist" view if you can't get used to the new icon setup.

I was a tester, and probably JCho too. Download it tomorrow morning and be prepared to stay glued for quite a while for free*

I was all happily going to iTunes to do this "Playlist" and then I remembered that my is in Spanish, I and cant find that, but knowing that is possible and knowing that is probably me who cant see whats in an update, I will re-install it. That should fix it. t

*Free if you want an energy system, if not, be prepared to pay 5$ with a smile to remove it.

Playlist should be the middle of the button selections at the top. Eg. "My Music" "Playlists" "iTunes Store", not at my PC at the moment so can't recall exact.

That Miika game coming tonight looks quite promising. Supposedly a bit like Monument Valley mixed with Fez. Two amazing games. If this is even half as good as those, count me in.

A game called Ghost Blade just appeared on the appstore. Looks a lot like Ninja Gaiden DS.
Played for about 20 minutes. So far I'm pleased with it

The bad: the translation is hilariously bad. I'm talking Google translation bad. Visuals are not impressive. I would say non high budget PS2 game level of graphics.

The good: controls are pretty good. Or at least as good as one can expect from a swipe based hack and slash. If you played Ninja Gaiden DS you know what to expect. Framerate is rock solid on my mini retina, which is pretty damn important for action games.

So far I'm pleased with it. Too soon yet to tell if it's $5 well spent though. The translation is a shame, but who cares if the action is good.

iTunes link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ghost-blade/id915281140?l=zh&ls=1&mt=8

I know it doesn't matter if they're good, but both are pretty unsightly :( Really bad art.

Indeed, which is why I almost made the mistake of writing it off. If you like SRPGs you absolutely must try it. It's a brilliant game with an amateurish presentation.

Ghost Blade does look good and a game even remotely compared to Ninja Gaiden is certainly nice to see on iOS. Have to keep an eye on that one, but too many other things on my plate and upcoming for me to bite now.

Keep in mind that's Ninja Gaiden DS, which is a very different beast from the real thing.

Dear GAF i am happy to announce the release of our newest game from indie studio MEGO, "Escape from Montegrande". a wacky weaponised skiing action with exploding horses.
IMG_0186.png

In this game you are Frank, a convict in the world highest prison, Montegrande. And to escape you must ski with a gameplay very similar to the windows 3.11 classic "Ski Free" only this time with weapons and strange power-ups like exploding horses.
IMG_0184.png

We designed the game with a bunch of hidden easter eggs and randomly generated levels with a neat algorithm so every time you escape is different.
We are working on new versions with improved level design, weapons and even more explosions

You can find the game on the App Store here

Wow, thanks for the warning. Somehow they've made iTunes worse with every iteration. Every time I think they can't possibly screw it up any further, and then I upgrade and I discover I was wrong. Jeez.

As I mentioned above, I don't have those issues he's describing in 12. Version 12 is so much snappier than 11 ever was too.

From my experience so far, and judging from the thread over in OT, it's actually running better on Windows than I remember seeing it for a lot of folks.

Ok, Ghost Blade. About a hour in and I'm ready to proclaim this as the best action game of this kind on the AppStore. Mainly because there's no competition, but hey, heh.

It's the closest to Ninja Gaiden you will get on iOS. Obviously not nearly as deep and skilled based, but this isn't a button masher (you know what I mean) either. Enemies are getting tougher and you have to properly evade, counter attack, crowd control, watch for ranged attacks, etc. It's pretty satisfying.

And the translation is so bad it's good.

Anyway, not ready to give a verdict quite just yet, but so far I'm optimistic! Only game of this genre I enjoyed on iOS was The Gods and so far this is better.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, the game is portrait only. Take that as you will.

Stop it please, I'm trying to save money here...

How does it control? Portrait games already make me hesitant, and this is a portrait game and a hack n slash. How does that even work?

That's pretty much the most fitting description for the game.

Stop it please, I'm trying to save money here...

There's an invisible virtual stick to move, the rest is controlled by swipes. For instance, if you swipe horizontally over an enemy it will slash once, if you keep slashing it will perform multiple slashes (combo), if you swipe over another enemy it will change the attack and slash that enemy. Swipe over two enemies and he will do a whirlwind attack. Time your swipe and he will do a different attack.

Swipe up over an enemy and he will lift it for an air combo. Then you can slash down to stomp or slash horizontally in the air for combos.

If you swipe down anywhere on the screen the character will evade to that direction. If you swipe up anywhere on the screen the character will jump in that direction.

To throw knifes you keep tapping an enemy.

There's also magic. The one I got so far makes you draw a simbol, then a fireball appears and you drag your finger anywhere on the screen and the fire will follow.

There's more to it of course, but that's the basics.

It takes some time to get used to it, but I like the controls. You can also change from the invisible virtual stick to a drag system for movement (like Battleheart Legacy).

Dammit. You guys like to get me to spend more money! I love a good hack n slash and if Ghost Blade is as good or better than The Gods, I don't think I can pass.

I nearly gave into Deathbat, but it looked like crap. But with this getting good responses....

Hmm, well I'll have to think about it a little more I suppose. My experience with upgrading iTunes has consistently been that they take away features I use and replace them with ones that don't work as well, or else they make the interface more difficult to navigate. Every time I've upgraded iTunes hoping that they fixed some of my complaints with prior versions, it always turns out that they've made it even worse. :/
I actually much prefer the icon based navigation system that's default in 12 over what 11 presented. But yeah foremost the speed is the best.

So I activated iCloud Drive and I see some recent games saves there.
I hope that when more programs will be updated with iCloud Drive access (Filebrowser being my favorite) I'll be able to move/copy saves at will.

Escape from Montegrande looks great, but the lack of GameCenter in a high-scoring game turns me off... I hope they add it, if so, count me in.

Ghost Blade (hands-on video) also looks terrific, will keep an eye on impressions and if nothing good comes out tomorrow I will snatch it.

Miika (youtube channel with some videos showing the game) looks adorable and a bit "Monument Valley" alike, rotating the scenery to find the solution. I will buy this tonight, been looking forward to more MV experiences.

That one thing I noticed, the improvement in speed. The .exe take a lot less to execute and opening the store inside was lightning fast compared to before. I am not at home but I will reinstall it to see if the problem with my app description update content thing went away. As for the design, I looked at it after my initial complain and I found it... better? Its definitely gives more space for the app icons and the bar that was before is reduced to a tiny one on top now. Now if the descriptions worked as they should...

And Swap Heroes sounds good.

It's not even Wednesday and I already want Miika, Ghost Blade and Swap Heroes.

And I know I'll want Puzzle to the Center of the Earth.

My wallet (and my wife) aren't going to be happy with all the other games I've been buying :(

Thank goodness I at least didn't give into Deathbat ... Ghost Blade looks much better and deeper combat wise.

Liking Ghost Blade myself, but be prepared for a bad Chinese/English translation grammar job.

Indeed. Game is full of these little grammar mistakes.

The game is a little buggy as well at least on iPhone 6, I sometimes don't get any sound effects, just music.

Well worth checking out though.

Re: iTunes, App Update descriptions seem a little bit inconsistent, I have some apps which don't show it and others that do.

Swap quest looks cool and Miika looks adorable.

Trying out thanks to early promo codes Puzzle to the centre of the Earth (I can see many people here becoming hopelessly addicted to it) and Warhammer 40K:Space Wolf.

The latter in particular is really really good....a potentially awesome game (nice engine and GREAT card/tbs mechanic) possibly ruined by a freemium model (nothing too nasty so far to be honest).
You can't go wrong with ISO graphics and terminators...and overwatch is awesome as usual.

Will keep trying and report.

Got a code for Puzzle To The Center of The Earth

Man...that's a lot of levels

I really like the mix of matching and exploration and I haven't even encountered any enemies yet.

Where are people getting codes? Other than that site that shall be remain unnamed.

So has anyone started thinking about their favorite IOS games of 2014 yet? It's almost that time of the year

Yeah, I've been thinking of mine from what I've played this year

-Table Tennis Touch
-Turbo Dismount
-VVVVVV
-Hearthstone
-Monument Valley
-FTL: Faster Than Light
-Threes
-Wayward Souls

.

I know there's only one game of the year thread, rightly, but with there was a separate mobile one. There's been so many great mobile games this year, a lot of them got buried.

Some of us asked for a separate goty thread just for mobile last year but one of the mods said that was counterproductive or something along those lines.

It may be overkill here, but last year I had a separate "indie" GOTY thread and poll on a popular iOS site that I won't bother to name.

I'd be more than happy to run such a thread here as well at the end of the year.

That blows if that's the case again this year. So many console/PC gamers still look down at mobile gaming. And, as such, I'm sure there wouldn't be a snowball's chance in hell of seeing a mobile game get recognized in an overall GOTY thread.

To be fair, I'm sure vita and 3ds gamers say the same thing.

Really don't see what a big deal it would be to have separate threads: console, PC, handheld and mobile.

There's so many threads here to begin with why would it hurt to separate them?

Anyway, not my decision to make.

Been playing Ghost Blade and have to say I'm impressed. Gameplay is fantastic with lots moves and the swipe controls work very well.

In addition to Ninja Gaiden, it also gives me a very Devil May Cry vibe. Thought using portrait would bother me, but it's nice -- although I still probably would prefer landscape.

Hopefully the game will be successful enough that they can improve the translation. That's then only downfall I can see.

Bought Miika and so far its good. You rotate the scenery as you would in FEZ but its structured like MV with narrow paths and playing more with the angles. The character is always walking and you have to connect the path between two platforms pieces at the same time, and when they connect you release and the character walk over. Chapter 1 is really easy but world 2 introduced a bridges spicing things up. Nice combination with a great art style and soothing soundtrack. 25 levels included (the four seasons with -+6 levels each). I would like to see GameCenter included. So far, so good.

Edit: SwapHeroes and Ghost Blade look awesome.

Sounds good to me! I Tweeted the dev to see if the Android version would be out soon. With all these games, I'm definitely running into space issues on my 5S.

And ditto on Ghost Blade being awesome!
