I enjoyed the Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force titles on the PSP

I'm kind of bummed out that Tag Force 6 wasn't localized in English or a Tag Force 7 was developed for the Vita.

The DS World Championship series was alright but one of my favorite features of the Tag Force games was the Card Album and mode in which you can walk around the town and challenge AI players.

The Card Album was especially nice being able to see higher res artwork of the cards in game.

The Wii's Duel Transer and Millennium Duels for the PS3 and 360 are based on Tag Forces mechanics but unfortunately without the exploration and card albums. As well as a horribly ass backwards card acquisition method based on terrible RNG. I prefer buying the boosters and construction decks much like how the World Championship and Tag Force titles allowed.

Millennium Duels is the most recent up-to-date video game based on the official rules up to the September 2013 forbidden list.

Hopefully a more refined game comes out for the PS4 and XB1 with more recent card sets and rulings and a way to buy boosters and structure decks. Although I don't know if Millennium Duels did well enough to warrant a sequel.

I've never gotten much into video card games. What's a good, readily available starting point?
I've also heard bad things about SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS, although I've wanted to try it. What's bad about it in particular?

Pokemon TGC, though Card Pop is bullshit. But it's much less bullshit than basically any microtransaction game.

Most recently I've been playing Monster Monpiece, much as I love Pokemon TGC it's cool to see games designed specifically designed for digital.

I also liked Elemental Monster TGC for PS3, it's a simple game based on having 2-6 cards and matches can be fairly quick and simple, no drawing cards at all, but like 99% of games it's online is dead and the top end of the CPU battles are super boring because the AI isn't that smart so instead it covers by "cheating" and just having ridiculously good cards.

Not a fan of Hearthstone's business model so I haven't supported it. Ideal digital TGCs for me are natively digital, have a significant single player campaign so online play isn't required to get started and are microtransaction free. ...which is to say they do not exist...

It's a pretty cool RPG, I just don't think it's a very good card game.

But the horrible voice acting kinda killed it for me.

I always turn off voice-acting in games, so I didn't care about that.

While I do prefer the standard system of a typical turn-based JRPG, the card system in Baten Kaitos was pretty interesting - collecting, mixing a deck that led to a bunch of combos and higher damage, etc.
I actually liked the card aspect more in EWatLO better than in Origins

It's a toss up between the original SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash (not the sequel they added too much to it) and Phantasy Star Online Ep IIII CARD.

leaning towards Card Fighters Clash, because PSO III a player could get their ass handed to them online if not prepared.

Also a shout out to Hearthstone, because it's actually active,

The only one I've really gotten into is Pokemon TCG. I've played a few Yu-Gi-Oh games, but not for very long. Progression just seemed kinda slow. Maybe I'll give the series another shot some day.

Yeah Yeah yeah!

The best, and two was the best one, it really refined the card based gameplay that 1 had. It was so much fun. boss battles were intense.

Such a fun and unique game, WHY WONT YOU RELEASE IT ON DIGITAL!?

Magic and Overpower are both lots of fun. Magic is insanely complex; I could never hope to really wrap my head around the insane legacy the game has and all the strategies and decks and expansions that are now part of its history. There's so much.

Pokemon TCG was lots of fun on GBC.

Hearthstone is my current jam. Fucking amazing game.

Tetra Master was a fucking aberration. Inferior in every way to Triple Triad. The random nature of so many effects and actions was infuriating.

Culdcept Saga on the 360 for me.

Yep, and I wait for it's return with longing in my heart, hoping its ship didn't sink.

edit:
i beat the ds one, learning what symbols meant what ability as i played. I have considered buying a JP 3ds.

I would love this game to come back as a downloadable or portable title again. It's just an amazing game, though I came to it far too late to ever get in any online play.

Unfortunately, by the time I realized you could turn off the voice acting (halfway thru the game), the damage had been done.

Most interesting thing to me was that your healing items actually expired. Thinking back, the game actually did a lot of interesting/weird things.

Card Fighters Clash is the greatest. Still dust off the NGPC now and then to clash some cards.

I remember enjoying PSO Episode 3 as well, but I don't think it'll win any awards.

The game is apparently not balanced allowing you to win in one turn

Probably the already mentioned Magic the Gathering game from Microprose. I felt like it really hit all the right things for me. Classic gameplay that was accurate to the actual game, not having to buy digital card packs for real money, editing my decks, and no weird rules except for very special fights like the final boss. Felt like I really got my money's worth. Also the AI fought consistently and I didn't really feel was reading my hands too much.

The runner up / special mention to me were the Yu-Gi-Oh games that followed the the actual CCG without the special rules. Even if they did have a lot of flaws like rigged AI and the fact they happened to be seeing all your cards. I always kinda rolled my eyes when they just happened to know to stop attacking my face down monsters just cause they couldn't' beat it, or it was something like man eater bug. Even with the psychic AI I still had fun. The tag series for the PSP was fun, if frustrating when your partner was a complete moron.

Edit: Just after posting I noticed I missed a lot of good ones that other posters mentioned. SNK vs Capcom, Baten Kaitos and PSO Episode 3. I really had a lot of fun with all of those also.

So this one is a weird example because the videogame was technically an rpg based on the cardgame, but they used the same general mechanics and directly influenced/referenced eachother in a neat way.

Sad that the IP was burnt into the ground by whatever happened once the cardgame failed. The tv show was awful beyond awful.

I definitely recommend Culdcept to anyone who hasn't tried it yet. While the most recent entry was only released for Japanese 3DSs, Culdcept Saga for 360 (and I'd assume the PS2 entry as well, but I haven't played it) is still perfectly serviceable. It's a neat mix of TCG and Monopoly/Fortune Street, and the sort of trading card game you really can't get outside of video games.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelist of the Roses.

A PS2 spin-off, it has elements of a board-game alongside the actual TCG, but is a bit loose like Forbidden Memories---cards have special abilities they don't have normally, you can pick a card "leader", and you can fuse monsters like in Forbidden Memories and the show. The story is delightfully absurd...all the classic Yu-Gi-Oh characters take the part of historical figures in the French Ware of the Roses.

In terms of normal Yu-Gi-Oh games, Nightmare Troubadour was one of my favorites, a nice mix of serious TCG with the plot of Battle City. Also the GX DS game, Spirit Caller, was also great.

Those two games seem to have had a higher production value too. Like I played the 5D's DS games, and even though they cam way later, they seem cheaper looking and uglier.

EDIT: Was I the only one who played the Yu-Gi-Oh "Mario Kart" Wheelie Breakers? Game was stupid as hell but I'm not going to lie I'd love to see a more competent developer make a Card Battle Racing Game.

without doubt, other than dueling you have LOTS of stories, activities etc, and looking at arrogant people crying at the end of a duel has no price, this is what i would like to see in every TCG games, i don't want to duel against moving cards, i want to duel against "people", i want to see them.

It was amazing. I wish they would make a new YGH game similar to Forbidden Memories and Duelist of Roses. I don't understand the rules of the new YGH games :|

Meh, my favorite cards in absolute(in Tag Force 3) are the cloudians(but i like others too)

This one for example is 5 level water - fairy(so it can be easily evoked and there are many water and fairy cards that can help it), can't be destroyed in battle and can easily and fast gain very high attack points since each fog counter(that can easily become many fast!) grants it 500 additional attack points.

Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelists of the Roses for the PS2.

Has yet to be surpassed in my book. Part of the reason I loved it is that the game was basically cheating you at the later battles and against certain people and part of the thrill I had was overcoming those brutal odds and still winning. I DO NOT CARE YUGI DID A HEART OF THE CARDS PULL 4 TIMES IN A ROW I AM GOING TO WIN THIS MATCH!

I loved both of these so much. I still have my disks.

Also, who Cates about THTD and meteor black?

It's all about Jirai Gumo. A measly 80 stars for a damn fine early game boost

I don't know how to play those Tag Force games. They seem to be fun, but they are so confusing for newcomers. The PlayStation/PS2 titles were easy to understand.

Over a decade since I got over Yu-Gi-Oh and this is still such a fun game to play.

Yu-Gi-Oh Duelists Of The Roses

Fucking odd spin on the Yu-Gi-Oh formula, it was kind of like some rpg board game. While I didn't think it was too amazing at the time, I often find myself wanting to play this again. Maybe I'll seek it out again one day.

I used to play the Pokemon card game on Gameboy when I was young. Probably still one of my all-time favorite card game to date.

Digimon World: Digital Card Battle on PSX is also great. I hope there's a sequel for this one.
That Pokemon card game on Gameboy was great. Still one of my favorites, although I haven't played that many card games.
