Shinji Mikami's THE EVIL WITHIN |OT| Where's everyone going? Tango?

Most definely. I wonder how creating an entire game like that would have turned out though? Would we have gotten bored if it was that same style throughout or no? What do you think?
Tough to say, but one great thing about The Evil Within was that it never felt repetitive to me. Even the more action-y stuff like Chapters 11 & 12 didn't bother me much, because it was in small doses and was a change of pace.

Western games are better than Japanese games because they have more ammo drops.

Sound reasoning.

There are many reasons why Western games are far better than Japanese games in general.

This is not one of them.

I can't even think of a Japanese game I've enjoyed recently. At least to completion. I've started a few and dropped them.

Umm... Final Fantasy 10 maybe. That may be the last one I finished.

I did replay Chrono Trigger recently. I'll give you retro games.

Preferences. 80% of my gaming library consists of japanese games. More than half of my current and last gen games are japanese.

See this is why western games are better, you can play the game as hard or easy as you like. And TEW isn't really hard gameplay wise, there is just not enough fucking ammo.
I work for a living, when I have time to play I don't want to look in every room for boxes with 2 bullets because it involves no skill and is boring.
What really bothers me is, this game could have been great, I had many 9/10 moments.

Makes sense for a survival horror to have very limited ammo. But I think you really wasted your ammo and didn't look out carefully for more. Otherwhise I can't explain why you ran out of ammo on casual difficulty while I still had plenty of ammo on survival difficulty.

"Better" is subjective. Western games might just appeal more to you. That's okay.
Also, I'm working too but I take my time with games. Don't have a reason to rush things. Not the game's fault your that short on time because of work. Always something you and me should consider when playing games.

Again, subjective and matter of preference. One isn't inherently better than the other.

I get your point. But the thing is, I played RE etc. back in the day and normally never play on casual. Actually I used to be in League 1 in FIFA online and in the top 25% in COD. So skill isn't the problem. I got through the game pretty fine until chapter 15.
It's not that I wasn't connecting my shots or I was wasting ammo on purpose.
Chapter 15 has 3 back to back boss fights and few boxes laying around.
Any game in 2014 has to have a mechanic that helps players out if they die more than 5 times in the same spot.

That's your problem right there. No game has to have said mechanic, nor should they. See Dark Souls, etc for more. I get your frustrated with the game, but it's apparenty your having more difficult with it then most folks.

Chapter 15 killed me as well. All the previous chapters was frustrating and tough, but I thought it was just fair enough to survive. Once I got to 15, it was just way too much.

It's not because of the game design though. It's that last chapter syndrome a lot of games have. Dead Space 2 had it, Halo 3 had it, and numerous other games where they throw everything at you before the final climactic boss fight.

I hate that.

Just finished the game for the first time. People sure didn't lie about the length being bang on 15 hours! Is 38 deaths low for my first playthrough?

38 is much better than me! 119 deaths, LoL!

On survival too. Hey, I tried my best! And I loved the game unlike some reviews who gave the game lower scores because of the difficulty! :p

The only bit I struggled on during chapter 15 was the
instant-kill trip wire bits, where you dodge the spot-light
. I was actually surprised by how much ammo I had left over. I upgraded the pistol pretty much to it's maximum and the game seemed to adjust and throw ammo my way. It certainly rewards exploration - if you aren't prepared to scavenge, then of course boss fights are going to be harder.

If the game was too diffcult for me I would have died in the
fire/laura/hit switches part of the game
. Skillwise that section was really fun and the kind of "hard" I like.
I got to Chapter 15 in 14-15h which seems average to me, from what I read here.
It's a shame that TEW can't throw the player a bone.
Ammo boxes with 1 (one!) bullet? really?
I came into with an open mind, the technical issues don't even bother me, had a good time, and now won't finish it because I need 10-20 bullets more.

Fuck this chapter 10 boss.

You have NO mobility to dodge this prick.

By the time I've ran out of ammo and need to scrounge it up he's morphed in to his attack which kills in ONE HIT.

Whereas the big bosses in RE4 were epic and fun because they designed it around your moveset here it feels like you're handicapped, both physically and with the amount of ammo you get.

Just fucking bullshit.

Edit: Just beat him after tabbing back in to the game first try. Stuck on him? Bitch about it on GAF. Still a bullshit boss.

Heh, killed the chapter 10 boss on my first try. I did use 3 syringes, but i got out of it in one piece.
On that previous fight though, i died more times than i did from anything else in the game, except bomb disarming maybe :p
Not only that, but my already useless tendon hurts like a mofo now, and Bayonetta 2 releases tomorrow.
One piece of advise guys. Don't get old.

Pretty much my story too, without the bitching (well I did, but just to myself). I was livestreaming the game and died about 5 times to that ass. Decided, eff it... maybe tomorrow, I hate it! I turned off my stream, then decided one more try and beat it easily. Now I have no record of doing it =(

More amateur-hour scripted/event-related nonsense in Chapter 14...
Place a battery into a slot, cutscene triggers that you cannot skip, game doesn't pause the action, enemies can continue to advance on you as you lose control of your character. Terrible. Also, I actually really liked the end chapter squid boss, except for one thing...When he pulls you up and you're dangling from his tentacle, the game goes into campaign-game mode where you all of a sudden have infinite ammo. Would it have been such a crime if say the game used your actual bullets in your inventory? I mean, it auto-fucking-checkpoints all over the place (and right at the start of this boss encounter, specifically). Dumber & Dumber.
Come on, Tango/Mikami...

Will finish the game tonight, I guess. =/

On Ch8 now, I am just not enjoying this, I just turned the difficutly down to easy to get through the rest of the game, I'm just waiting for a revelation of whats going on, def. trading this in after I finish it, just not doing it for me. Other than the visuals, with the screen bugging out, or thr mindfuck of it, it's nothing really special, very bad shooting, punching does nothing, and seems to be very generic overall, except for the illusions. Is there anything redeeming, or is it not worth finishing? I'm really hoping for a payout of somekind.

So do some of you guys buy games due to hype or do ya'll have a genuine interest in the game and possibly know of the Director's previous games?

If this wasn't your "type" of game why buy it? Underneath the complaints I think some of you are just very bad at this game.

The game is heavily flawed, yes, but you are refusing to play by the game's rules and then bitching about it. It was well known this would be a game where resources were limited and that you would have to scrounge for every resource. So that is purely your fault. The game gives you MORE than sufficient ammo to get through the game, even on survival mode. I finished the game without firing a single magnum round. I made A LOT of mistakes throughout the game in which I could have conserved resources yet I still finished the game with a lot of ammo. There were very few moments where I was low and had to improvise. Don't expect the game to be forgiving just because you don't have time to respect the rules it very clearly makes known to the player. And then trashing Japanese games as a whole? OK haha.

I wouldn't say this is always the case but it's an interesting question. I mean I know I was hyped as can be, I played it, finished it, and loved it. Even with it's faults which I wasn't blind to. Yet it hit all my buttons and I've put more time into this game then most games released this year. I do know and saw some people were hyped for the game and walked away dissapointed too. I think part of it has to do with what games you played before hand, or when you played them. I know the first time I played Resident Evil 1. I died a ton, thought it was pretty tough. No checkpoints, no retries, no lives, limited ammo, sometimes obscure feeling puzzles, and trial and error moments like the boulders, etc. While TEW isn't exactly in the same style as RE, it still retains some similar themes and elements from the older horror games and I love it for those reason and I feel the original RE kinda prepared me for the trial and error, lack of ammo, and whatnot on TEW.

I wish I had actually paid attention after the credits. Somehow I completely missed my time played and amount of deaths on my initial run. No idea how that happened. On my current run though, I am pretty sure it's going to be near the 400 mark. At least.

For your first time facing him, he can be quite challenging, especially if you didn't bother upgrading
movement speed.
Compared to some bosses though, he's actually pretty easy once you learn a few tells.

Chapter 15 is the worst by far.
First the blood pit now the 2 safebox monsters, always run out of ammo.
This shit is really making the TEW experience really bad for me now.
The "casual" mode is a joke, way too hard, way too little ammo.
No wonder japanese game became obsolete compared to back then.

I would not recommend this game for anyone anymore.

Eh, it's only hard if you don't play strategically enough and increase stock early on. I beat it on survival and had a ton of ammo left. Sometimes I died on purpose to redo some parts if I felt I used too much ammo but that was my choice.

Playing through on Akumu now where you're not allowed to get hit. There's a guy playing through Akumu and not upgrading his stuff at all. So the game isn't REALLY hard. You might just not be used to games like this.

My thoughts exactly while reading some of those complaints.

I can see how some faults in the game can leave people disappointed (though I'm not one of them), but ammo management being tough is something you kind of should have seen coming. And the difficulty is spot on, IMO.

Any game in 2014 has to have a mechanic that helps players out if they die more than 5 times in the same spot.

Seriously, what the hell.

I have a whopping 43,500 points to spend. Should I spend 30,000 and max sprint? Or spend it on upgrading lots of other stuff like weapons etc?

You should be more careful when it comes to ammo in games like these. Personally I played through the game on Survival and had plenty of ammo in chapter 15.
I actually had a luxury problem of what weapon to use when dealing with the two keepers.

Are people really having such a hard time with the invisible enemies? The levels they're in are littered with objects that are physics enabled, and it makes it obvious where they're moving because shit is getting knocked about. Also, if you're worried they're close to you, start meleeing like crazy, because it will not only force them to appear but also stagger them.

It's wild to me that so many people are having such problems with this.

You know... I was having a flawless PC experience (with the frame-rate unlocked, mind you), and all of the sudden the game has started locking up on me in Chapter 9.

The double-doors at the top of the stairs... the room where you find
the lower dial
has locked up on me the last five times. I literally can't proceed as I cannot get through the room without a crash.

Any suggestions?

Honestly. Take all the tweeks you made to the game, run it as normal, see if you can get past that part and save. The apply the modifications again.

Hey GAF!
I was thinking to buy a PS4 in order to play this game but now I'm a little confused. Besides the graphics, what is the difference between the PS3 and PS4 version?
Thanks!

Chapter 12 "
Ride
" is by far the worse chapter in the game.

I mean, what was that? Some Gears of War shit right there. Felt really out of place.
