Should the WiiU have at trophy/achievement system?

No , they should focus on getting third parties onboard instead , achievements are useless.

It cant hurt , but it should NOT be any kind of priority for them at this point.

Since I play so much PS4/X1 when I go to my WiiU I honestly find myself missing it. I never thought I'd be one of those people but I feel like the Trophies/Achievements help me move forward for something, they push me to finish games.

Each individual game has something like stamps that are basically the same thing, which you can share via Miiverse. There's really no reason to.

Can't we have one platform that doesn't shit up all its games with compulsory trophies / achievements?

Please?

Just give an option to hide them for the people that are afraid of them.

Just make up your own trophies and write them on a picture you can email round to people who don't care.
"Force people to implement trophies and achievements, and then throw people who don't want them the smallest possible bone by telling them to opt out" is such a shit counter-argument.

Sure why not. It seemed like they were heading this direction with Stamps. I wish more games had stamps that were more clearly tied to in-game goals. They would be fun to collect and more useful than straight out achievement points.

Maturity, bitches.
If the reason is to add more meat to a game, then games currently can do that with their own tailored in-game achievements.

If I want to share it with the world I'll just snap a photo and post it on Miiverse. Progress is measured in different ways for games so a one size fits all solution is not the best option.

I don't understand people saying nope.

It's an optional feature that satisfies people who like it and people who don't like it don't have to use it.

Looking at the communities behind trophies and achievements on PlayStation and Xbox, I'd say there are plenty of people who like it.

Also, I truly believe some games are made better by a decent trophy/achievement list.

I wouldn't mind if Nintendo had their own trophy-like system, but it is really low on the list on the things that Nintendo could do to make their products better.

Yeah, but it would be nice to have a single place where I can see all the stamps I got across all games. And if that place were public, that would essentially be a regular achievement thingy.

Yes. They're not super important, but they can be fun. And they can also encourage me to try different things out in games. Like the various weapon trophies in uncharted or a complete stealth run in mgs2.

Nintendo will do its own thing though. Until their next console when they finally adopt a system similar to achievements/trophies.

I think that is a very silly reason to buy on one platform or another, but more power to you.

Nintendo has put custom stamps in their games that you unlock. What I would like is the ability to use those stamps outside of their respective game's community on miiverse.

This would satisfy the itch for trophies and they would actually be something useful and fun instead of just an e-peen.

Bye the way I had my WiiU before my PS4. But for some reason I enjoy getting trophies.. But when the game got delayed and came out about the same time I picked the PS4 version because of having trophies.

But its an optional feature NOW and people don't like that.

What people seemingly actually want everytime this topic comes up is for Nintendo to make it compulsory for all games to include achievements / trophies at a systemwide level.

That's the opposite of optional.

Stamps are cool, but I would like a Stamp Album as part of the OS.

And the ability to use Stamps in different Communities.

Yes absolutely.
I'm not a huge achievement whore or anything but I still enjoy them and I think they are sorely missing on wiiu.

Trophies and achievements are only fun if it's systemwide tbh.

True, but they really should have provided a system wide implementation of them. I would love if you had a "Stamp Book" and could browse them based on game. You dont even need to have a number attached to them, just list the description of how you got the stamp if you cursor over it. Maybe next console :(
This. Love the idea of Stamp book. Also add the ability to browse by date - would be like a journal. And yeah, no need for number.

Quoted for enforcement.

I was also kind of disappointed DKTF didn't incluse stamps, it has its puzzles I know but I like when the games use a similar structure.

Unsurprisingly this thread has turned the exact same as it has every other time it has been made. It's to late now, but I do hope their next console has them.

doesn't bother me I'm over that whole thing. I prefer the Smash Bros challenges where in you actually unlock things for the game.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Yes, and they should all be stamps. Except you should be able to check your friends "Stamp Collection", which lists how they were awarded (Collectable in game or Feat based).

I think the best solution would be to have a NNID-based system in place that is opt-in for developers.

Good Miiverse integration is probably better than any specific achievement list for people who care about sharing that kind of stuff, but having the option for standard achievements wouldn't be a bad thing.

This is the entire reason implementing such a feature system-wide is a great thing. It's neat to be able to bring up a list of my trophies/achievements and compare them to my buddies. Not for competition, but as a way to see what sort of games we like. If my buddies have maxed out all the achievements or trophies in a game, its usually a sign to me that the game is worth checking out.

Such features really only work at a system level. On a game-by-game basis, I have to actually have the game in the first place to check the trophy/achievement progress.

Anything involving multiplayer. Since people get the trophies and then never play the game again. In turn people wont play certain parts of games because the achievements or trophies are "too hard to achieve"

That sounds more the fault of these strawmen than the trophies themselves.

They could, but it wouldn't fix any of their problems. Trophies are nice, but they don't make enough of an impact on games for me to consider the games any better for it.
What games have been ruined by trophies?
In the beginning Gears Of War was terrible to play online because people would constantly use weapons they weren't good with just to rack up kills to get achievements. It subsided after a couple months. But it was pretty tiresome watch a couple people a game fail at using the sniper rifle or pistol and screw up the game for the rest of the team.

Outside of multi player I don't think they can ruin anything.

I really like the stamps you can use on Miiverse. Way better then a trophy. Would be cool if stamps were system wide and you could check out your friends stamp collection etc.

The Smash Brothers trophy system should be on an OS level. Would make it so much more meaningful and desirable to get trophies when they're actual trophies that you can look at.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Yes it does. People should take note that:

1. There's a community for it.
2. If Nintendo had it from the start, the community will be highly interested.
3. ...
4. Profit

Also, doesn't it also increase play value? I mean I play the game and when I finish it, I crave to complete the platinum and I get a bang for my buck.

Yes.

Another opportunity to plug my system level sticker/stamp system. Every user gets a Sticker Book that is tied to their NNID. You unlock stickers in games by completing various tasks (Some Nintendo games already have this) and then they are placed in the Sticker Book. The more difficult the achievement, the larger the sticker is.

You can rearrange the stickers in your Sticker Book however you like and they are there for everyone to see via Miiverse. You can also use the stickers for your Miiverse posts.

There is no score associated with them. It's just the size of the sticker that denotes the difficulty of the achievement.

Nintendo is practically already doing this now with some of their own games. If they made it system level and opened it up to third parties I think this would fill the achievement gap.

I don't mind if they are there, just think most are carrots designed to get you to replay the same content. Have never really understood playing a game just for the trophies, the base game itself should be fun enough to want to replay.

Personally i don't care but i do think the lack of a mandatory rule for all games to have trophies is hurting the system's appeal to a lot of people.

So, a programmer who's tasked with implementing an achievement system should instead work on getting third parties on board? Okay. Makes sense, I guess. I mean, totally comparable. Totally an either-or situation.

I like having one system where I don't have to worry about achievements/trophies/whatever. They have really ruined my gaming on other things since I can't just play a game and have to make sure I get all the fake points because I'm stupid.

To clarify, because the last time I got genuinely angry posting on GAF was this topic about trophies;

- I'm fine with a systemwide "profile page" which lists whatever collections in whatever games you've earned for any games that choose to implement that, like Steams profile page

- I'm 100% not fine with the concept that trophies should be a mandatory inclusion in a specific standardised format for every game, just as I'm 100% not fine with the concept that every game should be an FPS or that everygame should be open world, and I don't care how much the people who love open world and FPS games want that

What games have been ruined by trophies?

Apart from poorly implemented trophies and multiplayer specific trophies that become impossible to obtain, I can tell you some games that WOULD HAVE BEEN ruined with trophies:
- Castlevania SOTN
- the Silent Hills
- Super Mario 3D Land / Super Mario 3D World
- Any game that contains structural game surprises

I don't see why not. It doesn't take anything away from the experience. It only adds value to those who want it.

This guy knows whats up.

I for one like trophies just to see what my friends have played and which trophy did they get. This is also kind of useful since can pretty much see if you friend did indeed beat that game on hard mode like swears he did on the phone.

Allowing trophy/achievement prompts to be hidden prevents all of that. It's not an inherent flaw with the system, but rather its current implementation. Heck, you could even make it the developers' choice if they want the popups or not by default.

Realistically, it's stupid to not have them. Take out the stupid points and leveling system and just put them in for things people wouldn't normally do. You know, the actually fun Trophies. That way, you avoid the issue of spoiling game mechanics, levels, or anything else that could be ruined by the trophy text. Also, don't put them for stupid crap in multiplayer and ruin it.

Heeeeeeeeel no. Stamps have kind of ruined Miiverse.
