OS X Yosemite [OT]

What happens if you check show all file name extensions?

Just making sure the files aren't just "image.JPG.jpg" or something (which has happened on some of my stuff due to how iPhoto transferred to aperture).

Other than that, check the "get info" (from right-click contextual menu) for a sample file. Each file I think has some sort of override.
Other than that I can only suggest a restart or a repair permissions and restart.

Yup, made sure the extension isn't doubled up. If I check show all file name extensions I see all file name extensions. If I uncheck it, I'll go into a folder and some files will have the extension hidden while others will have it shown and it seems random.

If I save a PDF from Chrome, the extension will show on the saved file. Don't even know how it determines when to show an extension and when not to.

I think there's a flag within the file itself as well that can override the global setting. For example I know when I export PDFs from pages it loves to hide it, but I prefer to see it and I have to manually right click get info and select show extension on each file.

Has anyone else noticed that Ctrl+C is now bound to switch to screenshot taking mode?

How the hell do I turn this off so I can use a terminal again?

Edit: System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Uncheck the stuff in Screen Shots
Restore the defaults.

How can I fullscreen an app (vlc) on a second monitor, while still be able to use the main screen (mba) ?

Well, for VLC there's a preference to use "Native Full Screen Mode (OSX) that fixes it. Chrome still doesn't do this properly though.

Safari does. At least for HTML5 video/H.264 and a very select few Flash players. (Not all are designed to use this mode.)

It's one of the many reasons I will never go back to Chrome.

Does anyone know how to fix this stupid popup saying "to open "this java application" you need to install the legacy java se 6 runtime?" I'm ready to throw my laptop at this point. Every two seconds it pops up.

Edit: Nvm, finally got it fixed.

Another question though, has anyone had the click on their trackpad work? Gestures, single finger tap, two finger tap, etc. all work but it does absolutely nothing if I click in the touch pad with one or two fingers. Is there a setting somewhere or is my touchpad borked somehow?

So as someone who doesn't use the OS X Mail app, and instead prefers to use the GMail web client, I'm assuming there's no way to add GMail's web client to Yosemite's Share menu?

As an aside, I'm actually liking the layout of iTunes 12.

I wasn't a big fan of them removing the sidebar (even if you could put it back) from iTunes 11.

and the way device icons would appear on the top bar was weird.

But in iTunes 12, having the store accessible from each media "type" seems logical, and if you change the media type while in the store, it keeps you in the store but changes the media store.

Seems ok.

My rMBP just locked up. I could still move the cursor, but everything else was frozen. Had to force restart it. And for some reason Safari Keyword Search has now lost all the searches I had defined. Fucking hell.

Yup. Finally an improvement, and a GUI that is consistent with the rest of the OS.

I still can't get the code for text message forwarding to show up.

I've tried logging out and back in with my Macbook Air 2014 model. I've enabled my email to send & recieve FaceTime and messages on my iPhone 6. Both devices are on the same WLAN, and I've tried three different ones so far.

I'm lost, anybody have any clue to what I'm doing wrong? :(

EDIT: I managed to pair the phone now. I relogged iMessage on both devices. Now I can't send SMS from my Mac, it just says the recipent doesnt have iMessage. Argh.

I wonder who the genius is at Apple who thought it would be a great idea to put the spotlight search window in the bloody centre of the screen. Obstructing all your open documents in the process.

There was nothing wrong with it the way it was before in the top right corner. This is an infuriatingly unnecessary change, just as when they inverted scrolling on the track-pad with Mavericks.

Upgraded to Yosemite last night, and I'm pretty annoyed right now. Google Drive is completely and utterly broken now. And do get around that I'm thinking oh, cool I can just use this new airdrop feature to get shit from my computer to my phone (I have to do this a lot for my job)... and Airdrop just doesn't fucking work. I don't know if it's something I'm doing, but I swear i've tried everything and it doesn't work. My computer can see my phone, but I try to send and... nothing. My phone can't see my computer despite having it turned on to discoverability.

I really just want google drive to work again, since I do a lot of images to be transferred and it's really easy just to save it in the drive folder while I'm working and have it on my phone already when I'm ready for it.

Hmm, so hardware is broken or should I just wipe and reinstall? I'm not sure what would all of a sudden make the click stop working.
I would try at least that before taking it to the store. If it still doesn't click even on a fresh install, it's probably a mechanical problem.

New machine? Old machine?

Is wifi and Bluetooth turned on on both devices?

Even if you're using Ethernet, I think it all has to be switched on.

I tested my airdrop and it worked a charm.

Make sure you're not selecting "contacts only", unless you are a contact yourself perhaps.

It's a pain to reinstall but it MIGHT work.

All the input/output of input devices is handled by software so if some kext file is missing or corrupt it can affect use of the hardware.

AppleCare and warranty don't usually cover software issues.

What happens in US when you have a problem with a corrupt install or some other software issue but you're under warranty? Does taking it to an apple store do anything?

Agreed completely. It's probably the same genius telling Microsoft some people would want a Start screen in your face obstructing all open windows instead of a nice small menu.

Yea that's a real "wtf" change for me too. I mean, I can understand the "front and center" approach, but it just doesn't work well without doing something in-addition(like dimming focus on everything but the search). I admit that having it in the upper-right was kind of odd, as it shifted attention away from what you were working on, but this isn't exactly "better" either.

It didn't actually annoy me at first. Not at least until people started pointing out how it was annoying and I went, "hey yeah that is kinda silly." I get it, but I prefer if you could at least move it to the side like any other window. I have a feeling it will change as updates get rolled out.

I think so - using the Thunderbolt/Display Port.
For posterity:
I can confirm that the Mac Mini (late 2012), with 2.5GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM running OS X 10.9.4 can indeed output to a 2K display over a mini-displayport to displayport cable.

It's just a chane we have to get used to.

Been there dozens of times. I got used to things, I'll get used to this.

Here's a weird thing I've found: an (unnamed) Apple TV showing up as an AirPlay device despite no one on the network owning one. This mysterious Apple TV doesn't show up in the AirPort utility client list, either. I'm... kinda afraid to connect to it, lol.

You know what you need to do.

*insert prank on screen to broadcast to Apple TV here*

maybe you connected once in the past?

Do they still need to be on the same network for air display? Maybe it can use a nearby one on some sort of airdrop like technology.

I tried installing this and it hangs up on the install saying

It cannot extract a voice application pkg in the file to restart and try again.

I try again and it keeps failing.

What can I do?

I noticed that this morning when I was messing around with Airdrop.

I think it's a bug related to that feature.

I like the new changes n all but Ios and OS X are littered with small bugs and inconsistencies. Dare I say my win 8.1 feels much more dependable and predictable.

Every time I type on a bar in Safari like Google Search or something, I have to type twice for it to input.

e.g. I have to type aapple for it to register apple on Google.

It doesn't happen on other browsers or other Yosemite apps and only on Safari so far. It's sorta bothering me and I was wondering if anyone knew a fix for it.

Are you running any safari extensions or plugins? Try uninstalling those.

I disabled it and it still acts up. I don't think it's flash player either.

Seems like the issue is only on Google search...

Hopefully we get a Safari update soon...

I've never heard of this issue. It has to be some software layer between your keyboard and Safari right? Check which search engine you're using. Autocorrect settings in Safari etc.

Tried clearing cookies, cache and history?
Does it happen in private browsing?

Has anyone installed Windows on a second partition without using bootcamp?

I have a 2010 Macbook pro that I took the super drive out of and put in a second hard drive. I want to install Windows on a partition on the second hard drive.

Bootcamp tells me that I need an optical drive before it'll proceed. I don't really want to install something like Daemon Tools just to handle this.

It still happens in private browsing.

This problem doesn't happen in Finder or any other program and it only occurs on Safari and certain sites like Google. It doesn't happen when I reply on NeoGAF but it does when I try typing in the search forum function.

It's a slight, but annoying inconvenience.

I wish Apple gave us a way of reinstalling Safari without having to reinstall OS X...
I guess I'll just have to wait for the next Safari update.

You could just mount it and install in on the other HDD via USB.

I'm also thinking of removing my SuperDrive for a second SSD but I haven't found the opportunity to do so.

How is it and are there any drawbacks? Like you can just use a USB BluRay/Disc Drive and it works right?

I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011, these support 16GB (2x8GB) RAM right? I'm thinking of upgrading that too.

Maybe run the command to allow AirDisk? Bootcamp works on Macs that shipped without optical drives after all.

Yes. Well, I can't comment on BluRay, I've never used one, but DVD/CD reading and writing works fine via USB.

Yes.

Yosemite has asked me if I wanted to use Safari as my default browser 3 or 4 times.. apparently there is a timer on it where it reminds you a week or so after saying no the first time.

Why do they think this is a good idea?

Also, any failsafe method of disabling handoff entirely? It is a bizarrely useless feature as my computer/ipad will still be ringing 3-5 seconds AFTER i have answered my phone.

The Safari request is seriously annoying. Aside from the fact I can't and won't use Safari - it's completely unusable to me as for some reason Apple don't think it's necessary to allow it to ask you where to save a file, and I save hundreds a day from gmail/dropbox etc.

It will only download to a single, specific folder. Why is it so hard for them to give you the choice? Choosing 'save link as...' doesn't always work, particularly for auto-pushed downloads and some email attachments. infuriating.

My sidebar and right click menu text looks weird.

Like it's some shitty flash app. The text isn't crisp.

Any ideas?

Also why does Open With > say "Fetching"?

Never did that before.

Why do I always think turning iMessage on is a good idea?

I really really really don't like how it doesn't send a notification to your phone because it assumes you saw the message on your computer.
