Considering trading PS4 towards XboxOne just because of noise... I have a problem :(

Already commented about how damn loud the PS4 is....

It's seriously gotten to the point where I can't stand anymore. I know the damn thing isn't defective. I know it's just part of the design:

Seriously, I'm not an engineer, but I can't help think to myself, "Why the F would you put ,what looks like the equivalent of a video card fan, to cool your system!?"

Basically ANY moderately taxing game (guaranteed with a 1080p/60fps like Metro or Shadow Warrior) sends the fan into a high pitched whirl that I can sometimes even hear through my Sony Gold headphones..... and I sit 10ft away from the system!
I know it's ridiculous to obsess of these hardcore 1st world problems, but it's just.... fucking i can't help it :(

anyway, I await for whatever is coming my way from GAF :/

mine is loud as hell, but i have seen others say theirs are quiet 99% of the time. I wouldnt say that is something to sell the system over though...turn ur volume up, you'll never notice it lol

Mine is quiet like 90% of the time, gets loud occasionally during certain games and when I bring up the OS menu during some games.

Otherwise I never hear it. Sorry about your defective PS4 OP

I've noticed the fan pick up when I'm playing something like TLOU but no so much during Destiny. When it does pick up though, it isn't that loud and I definitely can't hear it through my headphones.

On the sides of the PS4 in the crease are vents, they get clogged up real bad, I wiped the dust off the side vents only my PS4 and its quieter now. Some folks mistakenly think the PS4 only vents are on the back, there some on the sides aswell in the crease. Just use a damp cloth.

Edit...

Well if you like Halo, Sunset Overdrive, and Quantum Break, then come on over. We have worse hardware related stats, but the software support is pretty nice, but regardless expect lower resolution. The console is incredibly quiet, too.

I recommend looking up Quantum Break if you haven't, by the way. It's really cool.

Sounds pretty crazy. Through your Golds from 10+ ft away? You sure it isn't defective?

Where do you have it? Is it in a confined space?

So... you're telling me that you game with the volume turned down to zero, just so that you can hear the system running?

I mean c'mon, the console isn't that loud. I'm playing Driveclub right now (yeah... I know), and the thing is just purring. I seriously don't get these noise complaints; first world problem indeed.

Have you cleaned it? Mine is quieter than my PS3 Slim. If I have a fan on or my Elites, which I usually do, I can't hear it at all from about 5 feet away. If you're hearing it through headphones that far away something is definitely wrong.

How the hell do you hear the console over the sound coming out of the TV or the SS?
If the shit is that loud then it must be busted.
Call in for repairs.

I think you should send it in for a replacement just in case something actually is wrong with the thing. If the sound on the replacement still bothers you, then exchange it for an XBO if you still want to.

Nope, fairly open TV stand with plenty of room on both the sides and back.

And yes, I don't turn my Golds all the way up (so I can hear if the wife or kids are calling me), so there are instances where the system is working overtime and I can clearly hear it through the headphones :(

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Guys it's not defective, he is no engineer but Sony definitely designed the fan to sound like a jet engine.

Get a replacement OP.

Yeah, you shouldn't hear it through headphones. That's original Xbox 360 level loud (heh).

Definitely sounds like there's something wrong with it.

10 feet away? Wearing headphones?

I am suspicious. Those headphones aren't even open-backed!

Call customer service and send them your console so they can check it out if possible. I sent mine over an HDMI issue and they just sent me a new one.

What? Seriously? Something has to be wrong with your PS4. I never hear mine even after hours of playing.

You can't be serious about hearing it over your headphones...it would have to sound like a chainsaw! :/

My PS3 is louder than my PS4 has been. PS4 is vertical, clear on all sides by a couple feet. I have noticed if you put the console in a cubby, or close to a wall it will get louder due to it restricting ventilation. The only time I've heard the console is when it is installing the game initially. I sit a couple feet from the console in my room.

That is your issue. "Fairly open" is going to cause heat issues. The heat has less places it can go. If there is a board above the console (heat rises) it can't go up. I use to think having a open front and a hole in the back was enough. Sadly it will still heat up the console, which will in turn rev the fans.

That's either a defect or you don't have enough ventilation for it. If it's in an entertainment center, try putting it outside the cubby hole itself to get air.

Mine was super noisy after a short while until I moved it into an open space next to the TV, now it's basically inaudible.

Yeah, this might be an option. I have a feeling Sony would throw a Deal with it at me....

Yes, but how do you know it isn't defective? Cause I do the exact same all the time in terms of playing at night with Sony Golds on (from less than 7 ft) and I cannot hear my PS4 at all.

Have you clean the PS4 side vents in the crease? Mine got much quieter after I did that.

My PS4 is inaudible over my PC which is running 24/7 and my PC is idle so it's not that noisy. Granted, I play Destiny so maybe I'm not pushing it enough.

Well, I live in a modestly small apartment. Like, it's compact enough that the fridge can fill a room somewhat with noise when it's on :)

My spare room which is where my PS4 sits is tiny I can just about get a desk and a tv and a chair in it. My PS4 never gets crazy loud like you are suggesting yours does. You need to get it fixed.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
I wouldn't say mine is loud but compare to Xbox One it really is. But that doesnt mean it makes me want to get rid of it. I mean its better than last gen hardware. I dont know why people are making such a big deal out of nothing.
