What's up with disc installations on Xbox One?

Seriously.

What the fuck is up with this shit?

Has anyone ever been able to install a game from the disc without:

- Having to wait for an hour and/or
- Getting bizarre progress bar bugs and/or
- Getting stuck at 100% and having to reset the console?

It makes no sense.

Hell, I'm trying to install Sunset Overdrive here. It gets to 9% after one hour. I then pause and unpause. It goes up 9% to 18% instantly. After that, every single time I pause and unpause it goes up 9%, all the way to 100%. When it does get to 100%, it gets stuck.

What?

9% after an hour? I would reset the console and try again or something

After 2 hours I'm at like 75%
It's still atrocious compared to my other machines, but from past experience with the console, you may have to try weird stuff...

Like connecting to wifi, as blasphemous as it sounds, sometimes my wifi connection downloaded x1 games faster than my wall connection (don't ask me how)

The only time I've had this problem was with Thief. Other than that I've had pretty quick installs. I usually wait for 100% before playing and on average it takes about 15 minutes

For all Xbox One games, I always do the following:

1) Go to network -> Go offline
2) Put in the game disc, start installing
3) wait for the ENTIRE thing to install (get to 100%)
4) go online
5) start game, update comes up
6) download patch
7) Play game only after entire patch is downloaded.

Yeah, it's the Xbox One's worst characteristic thus far. Phil Spencer said in the recent IGN Podcast Unlocked that they're working on it. I'm doubtful it can easily be fixed if it is a hardware issue.

Since a lot of people might be buying Xbox Ones in the next few months, I think a lot of people are going to bring this up as a problem.

Install times are pretty slow compared to PS4 from my understanding (can't say for sure cause I don't own a PS4) and I believe they've said they're working on improving that aspect.

That said though, 9% after an hour definitely means there's something wrong with it. Might need to hard reset. Sunset Overdrive fully installed for me in about 30 minutes.

So if I remember right this is generally due to it also downloading Day one patches during the install process but how large are these patches if they take like an hour to download?

My secret?

Go offline. Install from disk and complete the install. Go online, and do any updates needed.

edit: it is shocking how many people figured this out

All this talk of install times on X1 has me somewhat worried but the moment of truth should come any time soon. Just twiddling my thumbs, waiting for UPS :/

Will definitely do.

It goes back to it trying to download patch before installing the game.

If you are coming from ps4 it will seem super slow since all ps4 games play while installing.

That's one thing I love about it, pop in game and you can play it within 2 minutes. Wonder why MS didn't implement this tech into their console.

This is what I do especially after when installing dead rising 3 for an hour and half the install had botched, and my game was left almost unplayable no joke it had ps2 textures and wouldn't load more than about 100 zombies on screen at a time and would freeze regularly. Deleted install and patch, did the above and it worked perfect.

That's why i go offline on every first Xbox One game disc installation. Xbox One seems to download the update AND install the disc at the same time, which is really weird. Even worse that the percentage counter doesn't really tell you what's going on. So if your internet is flaky it will seem like it isn't doing anything, but actually it's timing out.

PS4 handles this a lot better....game patches can download even while you are playing a game, which is a great feature on that system. I hope MS tries to copy that functionality because it's really convenient.

Don't own an Xbox one but I am thinking of jumping on with these bundles coming out. How long is the typical install? The PS4 does it almost instantly.

Honestly, i think people shouldn't have to figure out this trick to make installations work better. The system does nothing to tell you to do this....I only did this because I have some tech background; I'm sure a lot of people who don't would find it pretty frustrating.

Hey Xbox guys reading this....please throw us a bone and tell us this is gonna be fixed very soon.

That sounds wrong. Launch games tipped the scales closer to 1 hour than 30 but newer games are typical better now.

Make sure whenever you run into problems on XBO kill the apps or games by pressing start on the dashboard tile of it running. Then hard reset by holding power button if instant on is turned on.

Mine literally installed Sunset Overdrive in like 5 minutes. Maybe you should send your Xbox in. Also it counts the 300 MB update that comes with it.

Seems with how frequently they do FW upgrades this is something they'd add to the top of the list by now

Deleted the install because it was clearly glitched out. Trying again now with the console on offline mode.

It's pathetic that I have more trouble installing a game disc on a 2013 console than I did back in the Windows 95 days.

Pretty freaking terribly long if you're lucky.

Completely agree. PS4 installs are much smoother.

Wow, 2 hours and it's at 75? It's almost instant on PS4, like 10 minutes but usually less.

What I have seen is the problem is the 3 os. The game runs it own os.So it has to install a lot more. So I dont think this is a fw "feature" they can just update. It has to be built in the game os.

People like to knock the ps4 for media os features but they really nailed the gaming features imo.

The disc install times are horrible on XB1..I waited hours for Ryse to install. Sunset Overdrive however let me play when it was half-way installed which wasn't too terrible.

I can't see myself playing anything other than exclusives on the XB1 because of that. I kinda got spoiled with PlayGo...

Haven't had any problems at all with it, install times have generally been decent. Only one was Wolfenstein but I think that was a problem with the disc itself being bugged.

Install times are laughably bad on the X1, I'm sure it's something that'll be addressed though. There shouldn't be any real reason they can't get it on par with PS4

Ryse was the worst. Waited forever for it to be "ready to play," launched it, and was greeted with the message that it still had to install more for me to be able to play the beginning of the game.

Don't think I've had a PS4 game do that to me yet.

But yeah, was gonna wait till I've finish Bayonetta 2 before I popped SO in, guess I'll just get the process started now.

agree, this is the worst part about xb1

LOTF took about an hour or more to install. Wifi was on, but that shouldnt matter. They need to fix that.

I've always been an Xbox guy (had xb1 since launch). However, I picked up a ps4 a few months ago and I have to say the install times are infinitely better on ps4. Even game downloads were better (destiny beta on ps4 took 35 to download whilst xb1 took 90mins)

The disk DRM seems like a last-minute add-in since the Xbox One was only supposed to cater to digital installs.

For all Xbox One games, I always do the following:

1) Go to network -> Go offline
2) Put in the game disc, start installing
3) wait for the ENTIRE thing to install (get to 100%)

Seems like this would be the easy fix except instead of going offline, let the user dump the disk content like a Windows installation and have it deflate onto the hard disk.

Then download the patches automatically.

Right now, the installations feel like Linux distros with download updates checked.

Hopefully someone at Microsoft will have this implemented.

What?

I always disconnect from live while I'm installing from a disc. I noticed that it seems to try and download any updates for the game (which are often quite large - looking at you DR3) while it's installing. So I force it to install straight from the disc by disconnecting from live, then reconnect to live to download the inevitable title update. It goes pretty smoothly this way.

There is no need to disconnect and go offline, you can decline to install game updates at the same time, as for the disc installs, they're aware and working on it.

Everything I've written has been said already but ah well, forums a forum eh.

25 mins for watch dogs, same for forza horizon, it's not ideal but i don't have this problem other people are having....

Have only bought digitally so far so I haven't noticed it, but sounds like a major problem. Is it faster going to an external HDD? I heard the USB3 HDDs are faster than the Sata 2 inside.

lol at everyone having that same routine.

That's insane that this hasn't been fixed. How do you guys deal with this? I buy my game at retail, get home and can't even play it when I want? Fuck that.

It's shit, that's what happens.

Took me half a day before i could play Ryse when i rented it, hell it was actually more than that, i left it overnight and the next day it still wasn't over. I don't remember if i canceled and started again or what but it is fucking busted.

Terrible.

Also, having to wait for patches to download before being able to play is even worse, not everyone has 200mb connections MS.

What. The. Fuck.

That sounds horrendous.

they take the piss, so much so that i had alien isolation bundled with my x1 but i couldnt even be bothered to unwrap it and give it a go because of the long install times so it just sat there for a week before i traded it in.
