Why? It's a fan made mod, that's the worst example you can use.

Why? Because you say it is? Why is the fact that it's a fan made mod relevant?

For a new fighting game to reach its maximum potential it has to be played as a major focus starting out. It's not exactly healthy that the first tournament Smash 4 is entered in it's treated as a side game. That's sending a message to the new players that the game they just bought is second rate and they are more likely to quit early in the game's life span. A game being a side game attracts less entrants and exposure... EVO has proven this already.

I feel that you have to assume a game is solid until proven otherwise. Your method is more towards a game is mediocre until proven otherwise.

Semantics. It won't really be a "side-game", tucked away in some corner someplace like Fist of the North Star at EVO. A lot of this shit is perception and how TOs market the event. Smash 4 can be a huge draw to an event, but people still look forward most to seeing Melee grand finals at the apex of the tournament until Smash WiiU proves to be more competitively interesting at that point.

I edited my post slightly after you had quoted where I explained it better. It's not that it's a fan mod that's relevant... it's that it's an update of an EXISTING game and thus not a new game which is what we are discussing here relating to Smash 4. It would be like SF3 getting a fan mod (existing game) and people making the claim that it should take priority over SFV (a new game). That is why this is a bad example to use because Project M is not really a new game, it's an update to Brawl.

Apex will do whatever Apex wants based on the Smash community but we are mostly talking about EVO here hence why I brought up the CRT issue. So when we are talking about it being a side game we are talking in the context of EVO and I would say that Smash 4 being a side game at EVO would be an injustice towards the game unless it's almost unanimously agreed to be a terrible game (which doesn't seem to be the case based on what people playing the DS version are saying).

EVO announcing Smash 4 as one of its main game has big ramifications for its future tournament scene in that year. Big tournaments will have to run it and players will be more motivated to enter in Smash 4 at these big tournaments. If it wasn't at EVO then players would be less motivated to enter at this tournaments for Smash 4 and instead just concentrate on Melee... effectively slowing or even stunting the growth of Smash 4.

I was going over the OP post and just wanted to mention that it's missing that KOF 98 and 02 UM are coming to Steam in November and December.

Just to back up Dahbomb's point, I took a look at Melty Bread's old analytics data from 2010 and there was about an order of magnitude jump in traffic between right before Melty Blood was announced for Evo that year and the final weeks up to the event. That's probably an extreme case, but the Evo bump is very real for smaller games.

Wasn't the first tournament it was at (assuming you mean TFC) like a week after it came out?

Plus it's on 3DS, I feel like that hampers it a bit, despite there being so many 3DS's.

i don't think smash 4 is going to have a lot of trouble bringing players to tournaments. the problem is going to be tourney organizers having enough wii u's. on the plus side if they get the wii u's then they could organize mario kart 8 tournaments.

At this point, yeah, I think Wii U's will be a big issue for tournaments, at least for a bit.

I can half expect the Smash community to try and gather community U's to use for Evo if the game is there, since I can't see Nintendo donating any.

I'm pretty someone made a company specifically to lend out setups for tournaments.
I forgot what it was called, but they've sponsored a couple FGC majors in the past already. Could just get those guys to bring the Wii U's.

EDIT: Focus Fire

Bay Area going crazy right now. What a sweet Giants win.

Anyway WNF tourney just started: http://www.twitch.tv/leveluplive

Not sure if there's a grudge match, if there is one, Valle probably is going to make one up on the fly.

Edit: Also no Snake Eyez from the look of the bracket (he might be late as usual). If he doesn't show, Chris vs Brentt GF incoming.

so friday is my birthday, haven't celebrated in years, but always wanted to get an ice cream cake. Might go and get one, but idk if there is a dq close by

Melee's main problem is simply the whole Gamecube/CRT issue. It's a logistics problem at EVO and it's just easier for them to run Smash 4 only.

From what I understand it really isn't. The smash community brings everything and sets up a tournament at EVO. What does EVO have to do? Set up a couple tables and chairs and prepare the stream station for one CRT setup? Wow, what a significant undertaking.

The smash community (spearheaded by CrimsonBlur) set up the "smash vault" for EVO and MLG. A storage of 40 CRTs we can use for big events. They drove it out to EVO and set up the stations.

Smash 4 has to be at Evo next year, at least.

There is no need to be worried about the future of Melee. It will never die. If Smash 4 becomes a boring, slow paced, unbalanced mess of a game like Brawl, the Smash community will return to Melee and it'll be business as usual.

To be honest Omega mode is a huge breath of fresh air. Even for me Ultra is stale at the moment which is why I'm probably finding myself playing other games which I normally do not.
I'm getting in on it. Live SF an this looks to bring in the marvel players. Silly fun. Love it.

Personally I think there is a much bigger problem....Saving an compatability. You can cheat Project M with Homebrew to give you all the characters. But you can't on Wii U. There's so many other problems that come from this and only gets worse when you consider 3DS; Having all the characters and custom moves. Is any TO going to get a group together to fulfil the requirements to unlock all the characters at every tournament? I said this before but the age of unlocking characters is gone.

My idea would be that Nintendo release an optional DLC called "tournament pack". Let's you use all the characters and (if needed) custom moves.
As someone who is gonna being playing Smash 4, I'm already bored out of my mind of Unlocking characters....and the game isn't even out yet.

wth were their predictions anyways

what games did they even release besides dead rising 3 on pc

what games are they even planning to release within that timeframe

It's Capcom

The only hope at this point is someone buys them and puts them out of their misery

I just lost to a Bison that spammed his flaming dive over and over and over and I couldn't figure out a way to get in with Makoto.

Neutral jump HK/HP (or whatever has the highest, furthest hitbox, I have to look for Makoto) on reaction to his launch is usually the best counter for most characters.

You have to get up before he gets over you or is close to getting over you, because then he'll have the right angle to counter whatever you put out before you jump.

If you go up shortly after he launches, you'll have the advantage. Worst case, he pulls back on the devil's reverse and the neutral game is reset.

Make it a tournament

WNF vs NLBC vs Japan vs Canada vs Europe

They could each have a flag or something

So, Canada Cup 5 on 5?

By EVO2015, T7 will have been in Japan/Korea for 5 months with vastly superior nicovideo and Green Arcade stream footage, something very different from the EVO2011 TTT2 arcade exhibition.

Keep dreaming if you think Niconico video quality is going to get any better. Japan is great in so many things, but in this area they absolutely suck.

Of course, that's because the majority of internet access is on their phones so that quality comes out fine. But if you want to watch it on anything with a form factor larger than a pack of playing cards, it's intolerable.

Niconico has no reason to change, given the primary demographic they serve, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that anytime soon (and by soon, I mean the next decade).

Holy, really? Ice cream cakes are the ish. Get on that. Hell, I'll get one and have one delivered to you (if logistically feasible in your area) if you're comfortable with sending me the deets.

Also, edible cookie dough: http://www.edoughble.com/collections/all

Just sayin.

I don't want to sound rude but Tekken is more heavily supported by Markman who loves the game than by the community (even if I count Reep and Aris as important figures too). He has the contacts needed, knows Namco and knows how to be persuasive about all this as he's a businessman. If it was just the community, Tekken would not have been at EVO last year. PLUS a company like Namco can help organize, give prizes, give money, etc... Even the brand plays an important role, and Tekken is the most sold series in fighting games with a big history.
I would love to see SG at EVO but SG doesn't have a Markman to push things on, and is not a brand with such a history supported by such a big company.

What would be better is to give non official tournaments exposition on scene/stream once they go beyond a certain number of players. 150 players is a great thing that deserves tobe streamed and exposed to people.

Thanks for the supportive words. It's true. I like TEKKEN a lot. I am willing to help any and all scenes from a community and business standpoint. Just gotta get together.

I'm in Japan right now for MASTERCUP 7, btw! The biggest TEKKEN tournament in the world. It's going to be insane. We are going to see a lot of stuff coming out in the next few days so please look forward to the English stream!

It will probably be on twitch.tv/tekken :)

I'm not talking graphical quality. I'm talking about the quality of matches and how they display the system mechanics of T7 to the public. An exhibition at EVO with people who haven't had time with the game will most definitely not have that.

I love this kind of relationship you have and work you did with communities and I enjoyed a lot Tekken at EVO so thank you for that. I think it's something great that such "middle men" (this is not pejorative ^^) like you and others were able to be in position where you have a real influence on things.

Unfortunately sp00ky has some things going on and couldn't make it. We have Farpenoodle streaming instead. He is a great streamer/programmer that a lot of people don't know about. He creates a lot of the amazing graphics/overlays for FG streams and is the father of streamcontrol (used for xsplit streamers). He also streamed each Capcom Pro Tour Asia event and the TAITO Nationals for Capcom.

Hmm, I've always thought Niconico stream quality was just because they stream from their phones and not because of something set in place by niconico! Pretty sure I've seen some 720/60fps videos there, just can't remember if they were streams or uploaded videos.

Is there a stream schedule?

Agreed on that. Crossed the streams.

That's part of it, but the system, from what I've seen (and I admit this is subjective) it's just horrible even when streamed from something other than a phone. I'd love to be proved wrong on this.

However, I think it's just better from an FGC culture standpoint to have everyone move to YT (especially now that YT supports 60fps).
