Worst Character in a JRPG

And I thought no one could get worse than Karol from Vesperia.

Much, much worse

I usually have quite a high tolerance limit for annoying RPG characters, no problems there with whiny children and tough moms but there are two types that I switch out of the party as soon as possible:
- characters that talk and behave like imbeciles because the developers thought that'd be cute (e.g. Mieu from Tales of the Abyss)
- characters whose height is barely 1/3 of all the other characters in the game for no reason whatsoever (e.g. Roger from Star Ocean 3)

While the absolute worst ones have certainly already been brought up (Lymle), I find that I also really despise the whole robot person that wants to learn how to be human trope. Yes that does include this fucker:

Karol is not a bad character: he's just a coward kid that's been part of a lot of guilds because that's his only chance of survival; during the course of the story he proves to be useful and he evolves as a character.

Vaan was just there, kind of the Link of the player to FFXII so to say. I can understand people are dissapointed when they were expecting a cool lead, but I was not bothered by him at all. And I like most of the XII cast a lot. Maybe the game did not had a lot of dialouge and depth to the story, but the characters themselves were cool imo. One of the better FF casts even. A lot of the FF leads are actually quite terrible and make no sense at all or are just big man/womanchildren.

All the hate that Van gets is just because of the way he looks. I remember reading threads on other forums where people complained because "he was too gay". His clothes are not out of character because in the city of Ravanastre everyone dresses like that. Maybe all he needed was a shirt so everyone could love him, as someone else pointed out.

I'm playing through P4G right now, and while most of the dialogue is terrible, Yosuke is by far the worst. Every time he opens his mouth I want to reach into my Vita and strangle him. No wonder he's almost 20 levels behind my mains.

Bringing the other two threads full circle.
(Invalid. Turns out Serah was 18 in XIII. I know, I don't believe it either.)

I don't believe you. She's drawn like a 14-year-old. That's loli-level "it's okay to fap to this" misleading.

The entire cast of Tales of Innocence. Not only are they the dumbest main cast I've ever played as, but the game actively makes their "past-selves" far more interesting to the point that makes the main cast completely boring. This scene sums up everything that's wrong with this cast:

http://youtu.be/D2vJ0lzSIuo?t=24m41s

To anyone not interested in the video, here's basically what happens:
Your party defeats one of the bad guys. You have him surrounded and backed up to a corner. Several of your party members brandish their weapons and aim it at him then proceed to just...talk. You talk long enough for the bad guy to use the dumbest trick in the book (come closer, I've got a secret to tell you) on the main character, AND THE MAIN CHARACTER FALLS FOR IT, gets stabbed and the bad guy gets away.

I totally agree that the trope is overused to hell, but I think Aigis is one of the best written examples. Her story wasn't particularly unique, but it explored the differences between a machine and a person with a good degree of depth and thoughtfulness that most other examples of that trope.

The trope is still pretty lame though.

Pretty much everyone in Chrono Cross, but that might have just been due to loving Trigger so much :c It was such a let down, weh.

Obligatory Lightning mention, also. My sister in law oogles over her, and it just makes me wanna puke in a hat.

But Teepo was amazing.... I loved Teepo. *sigh*

I just feel like Teepo was hamfisted in the English dub. He's like Mako in Kill La Kill. I LOVE Mako, but you can't capture that quirky japanese charm in English without coming off as really grating (of course there are exceptions.) Teepo had me browsing through menus to change the dub... and the outcome wasn't fruitful.

I went though all pages, doing ctrl/F for Teepo. Surprised it took this long to see him mentioned.

Atrociously handled in the English dub. I stopped playing because of Teepo.

He has tons of progression. By worse I meant more annoying and I don't think it's a stretch to say that Karol's characterization started off a little frustrating and irksome.

Edit: By the end I didn't think Karol was a bad character, to clarify

Also this asshole

Still can't make sense of this character.

So even after you find out about
Reeve controlling this guy, which is kind of far fetched on its own, he continues to hide in a closet somewhere and control this stupid thing?

Why doesn't he come and join your party and get rid of this stupid ass thing?

She's one of the best "robot gets feelings" character ever, so take that back!

Definitely this.

Seems to be shrouded in odd clothing. So many questions left unanswered. ...is this a man...? ...a woman...? ...or should we ask...? Terrible character development. Would not let join party again.

Agnes Oblige from Bravely Default. I was so desperately hoping that she would be
killed off at some point throughout the story.

Were he gay, he'd be the most boring gay character ever.

As opposed to being the most boring straight character ever.

Teepo (alongside Elize) is the only halfway interesting character in the entirety of Tales of Xillia. The rest of the cast could easily fit in this topic--what a bland bunch of one note nobodies. Absolutely fucking awful cast.

Because Reeve is not a fighter, and I highly doubt he has any kind of special ability in combat. The robot can actually fight.

And Caith Sith can be controlled manually, and also has "auto" mode.

I am gonna go ahead and just put the entire cast of Luminous Arc in there.

Jesus what the fuck was up with that game.
Yes. Just...yes.

I couldn't even call that a game. I felt like hot coals were being grinded into my intestines every time I looked at the cast. Oh yeah, killed millions but totally okay to join the group. The story made no sense but that's okay. Game was a sub par srpg but that's okay.

Every character being puerile shit however is not okay. Felt like they were written by and for some delusional middle schoolers romance and all.

And yet somehow still better than Graces's sad lot. Vaan is still worse, in the boring department. If you put Vaan into George Michael Bluth's high school yearbook, Ann would look like a pop-up.

13 is bad, kay?

Yeah, OP you have no idea what a bad character is if you think it's from your list. "Kay!:

That Star Ocean character was atrocious. I would write Tri-Ace and Square both an e-mail if it got as bad it was with her again.

SO4I_Lymle.jpg

If you're new or you've played JRPGs before you should ignore this character by all means necessary. That character is atrocious.

I liked Alvin and Rowin pretty well. And Gaius was alright. But that's about the extent of my Xillia love. Milla was a robot and Jude was too squeeky clean.

Vesperia has the best cast, in my opinion.

I think what I hated more was random NPC enemies would be like:

"YOU KILLED ME IN A PAST LIFE. IT'S TIME FOR REVENGE]!!!"

*gets killed by party*

"DAMN. NOT AGAIN"

Based on 30 hours of FF7 so far; Cloud.

Come at me FFgaf.

Looking at FF7 only (not the more melodramatic incarnations later), I blame more awkward writing than anything. He is, fortunately, a hard personality to place, which makes sense, plot-wise. He's definitely more serious and a bit of a smart ass, I guess.
I think it would have been perfect and more realistic to still give him some of that Zack-like joy as well.

I think character's are only made better when they can still have a pretty set personality, but can still emote a good spectrum's worth, something too many J-titles too often don't have with one-note characters.

Therein lies a dark, dirty secret of last gen.

Star Ocean 4 had the best combat engine of its era.

It was even enough to overlook the horrid, horrid cut-scenes.

But Lymle was... such an indescribably loathesome machination of all that is dark and fell, that I could not muster the will to raise my shield, and force my way through the latter half.

Yup, skip the cutscenes and SO4 was awesome. Oodles of content and side quests (albeit a few too much grinding for loot drops), large worlds to explore, nice graphics, challenging dungeons, and a fantastic battle system. I actually preferred it to 3 :p

There sure are a lot of candidates...I remember the protagonist in valkyria chronicles 2 being super unbearable.

Gameplay was excellent though.

Vaan is definitely up there, I wish they had had the guts to make Ashe the main character in XII.
You mean Basch, right? He was the only interesting character in the entire game, and he was originally intended to be the lead before focus groups led to Vaan.

This motherfucker right here.

I'm playing through the game now, and he is one of the dumbest character's I've ever seen in a game. 9 out of 10 times where there is something that requires a solution of some kind, it's is extremely obvious what should be done. And every single fucking time this guy is absolutely clueless as to what that solution might be.

Which normally results in his trusty sidekick to normally go something like "god fucking damnit oliver, use you fucking magic!"

Then there's his whole savior complex. Despite being a little kid that looks like he's 7 years old or something, he's got no problem setting out to save the world from some evil thing that pretty no one in the whole wide world stands a chance agains't.

Then there's the way he talks. He's constant use of words like "oh boy" and "jeepers" make him sounds like some snobby little kid from 19th century or something, it's absolutely insufferable having to listen too.

Whoooa there pal. Oliver doesn't have a savior complex. He didn't even WANT to go to "the other world."
The only reason he is doing it is because Shizuku (I refused to acknowledge the horrendous name changes for the localized version.) told him that he could probably find a way to save his mom. Everything - Oliver's whole journey - is just to save his dearly beloved mother.
The whole "jeepers" thing doesn't exist in the original script. None of the weird things anyone says exists in the original script. As far as I'm concerned, the dub is ruined. It is flat out awful.

I have very real issues with liberties being taken with a script because they thought this way would be "better." Just fucking translate it. /rant

She was just plain rude to Swaine at every chance she had to speak to him. Swaine doesn't even do or say anything wrong or questionable or do anything to provoke her, but this stupid, stupid girl always responded to him in a rude, snap-back tone. Absolutely disliked her lack of respect to him and how much she clearly wanted to bed Oliver, as disturbing as it all sounds. She is a terrible character and I hope she is not in a sequel, or if she is, changes into a better, more likeable and less rude character. For now, she is a stupid, disrespectful little girl, ugh.

I agree with this. Maru is just terrible. She is constantly on Jairo's ass for nothing, and then in combat she is next to useless. She blows all of her MP in seconds on the most useless spells, and then will run in to melee, resulting in her quick demise. Awful.

This thread is painful to read, while a lot of characters deserve the hate some of the choices obviously come from people who either didn't play the game or didn't play long enough to let the characters develop.

Lymle deserves the crown.

Worst in recent memory. Haven't played XIII.

I absolutely loathe when developers try to shoehorn in some diminutive, heavily accented, faux-cutesy companion in a desperate attempt to recapture the Moogle magic.

Came here to post this. Wretched, vile creature with no redeemable features that ruined any and every scene he was in.

I'll never understand the hate Hope gets, doesn't FF13 take place over a few days.

Isn't he like 15 years old.

DIDN'T HIS MOM JUST FUCKING DIE IN FRONT OF HIM.

If anything it's a bit shit how fast he got over it. Yet everyone hates how he is grieving for his mom and angry that she died. What the fuck? Really?

Honestly I really like Hope and his story arc. He's a cool kid thrust into a shit storm and he deals with it the best he can and eventually becomes a better person.

I could randomly pick anyone from Star Ocean 4. There's a lot of casts I don't like, but that game's cast is a masterpiece of awfulness.

I can only think of one of the latest JRPGs i played and will probably get a lot of hate but this bitch was annoying. She made me hate the entire game.

Estelle_website.png
I won't hate, but I do doubt whether you finished the game.

I disliked Estelle passionately in the early hours as well, but by the time I finished Trails she had become one of my favourites. Her personality really develops after each major event in the story. By the end of the trilogy, she's become a real woman.
