I don't think it is terrible. I think it's average. Ok. Run of the mill. Standard. I definitely feel people are exagerrating things. But I do agree that it would be ignored without the Sonic name. Average platformers are.

Exactly. We were all kids once, and we weren't stupid. I knew which games I played on NES were fun and which ones were complete trash. I wouldn't just play a video game because it was there. If it wasn't fun I wouldn't play it and if there was nothing else available I'd do something different.
