I am addicted to Spelunky!

Have to say, I'm loving this on PS+ right now. Very frustrating but very fun.

I have one question: How the fuck do you kill Olmec? It's driving me crazy that I'm at the stage where I can get to Olmec in 4-5 minutes one out of every three tries (from the very start, the mines), but I've never beat him. The first time I beat him I'll get both the Speedlunky and Ironman trophies. I mean, I just did two 5 minute runs to him in a row, had about 13 health, 40 bombs, couldn't have gone better, but I reach him and I'm clueless as to how to avoid dying. I feel like it's strange to have mastered the game this much and be unable to do anything versus the final boss.

Any tips or help?
Just get him to a corner to keep you safe, place a bomb in the middle of two blocks so that you can clear out the most space possible and continue doing so until there's a path to the bottom. Then inch closer to the edge until your character does a funny balancing animation so that Olmec drops straight down the hole, and that's that.

I still do the daily challenge pretty much every day on my vita and I'm at the point where I'm consistently in the top 30 for each day, so that's rad. However, ghosting pretty much ruins my chances of ever getting a number one score for the day. It's not all that difficult to do once you have the right equipment but it at least doubles the average playthrough time which is total bullshit. The daily challenge would be so much more exciting if it wasn't a mechanic in the game.

There's nothing worse than beating yama and getting $700k only to see some dude who died on 4-1 has a score of $1.5 million. It's fucked.

Fun fact if no one already tried this but since Share Play is available, You can actually co-op with a friend now. Before I believe you had to be there physically but now you can actually co-op through share play :D did this last night with a friend from Georgia and myself from California. Pretty damn fun with more than one person I'll tell you that much.

Also I didn't check if someone already said this so, my apologies -_-

Eh, just know you did a great job and don't have the time to tediously ghost every level.

It does kinda suck that the daily challenge rewards those who have close to an hour to waste, but I'm not sure what can be done about it.

If Spelunky 2 is ever made, I wouldn't mind seeing the ghost be a little more dangerous. Make ghosting much more risky and you won't see as many people do it.

Hahahahaha, it worked, you magnificent bastard! It worked! Three weeks of trying!

Didn't get the speedlunky achievement because I spent so long bombing the hole, but Ironman is mine. On to hell!
The key to speed running Olmec is not using bombs at all. Rather doing it the normal way. OR, mastering the "cascading bomb" technique where you place multiple bombs on top of each other and they cascade downwards (Or upwards if on the ceiling)

Congrats! Once you know the method beating Olmec is trivial. Yama on the other hand...
Yama is easy as pie if you have a shotgun or a lot of sticky bombs and good aim. Olmec is harder relatively. Done right, Yama can take a lot less time with two ropes, one sticky bomb and a shotgun. Using the method most professionals use on him.

The method if you want to know: (You can see it in action in pretty much any video where someone defeats Yama)
First make your way to the top left or right side (Left is good and traditional.) and find the single column of bricks that's separated from the larger clump of bricks next to it by a single space and a chain. Throw a rope up directly beneath that single column and climb to the top. Then place a sticky bomb on the bottom of this column and when it blows up, throw a second rope up to this newly emptied area and climb all the way up. This will place you directly in line with Yama's head. Just fire away until the door opens. The hands are not important once the head is gone. Don't forget to take all the money!

When you first enter the level:
Take out Horsehead and Ox Face with your shotgun or sticky bombs. Try not to destroy the floor, even if you have Vlad's Amulet. (To prevent the money above from getting destroyed. If there are spike traps on the sides of his throne column, take them out first easily by standing in the doorway and jump up and throw a sticky bomb directly at the base of each one. If you take out the bottom Tiki Trap, the rest above will follow. Remember to always remain below some solid block once you get high enough that Yama starts pounding his fists. If you get knocked out you risk getting killed by something below.

I'd prefer if the level started caving in from the top after so long (not necessarily the exact same time on every map, but within a range or 2-3 minutes), which would give you a little time to finish up and get to the exit, but not be able to stay on the level indefinitely. Would fit thematically too.

I'd be OK with that.

After you get over the initial "WTF" reaction to the ghost when you first start playing, you realize he can easily be avoided if you're careful/have the right equipment.

Maybe there's a way they can patch the leaderboards to create a separate category for those who used a ghost to transform 5 or more jewels. I dunno.

I don't get too worked up about it. I'm not the best at Spelunky, but I'm pretty damn good and that's good enough for me. :)

That's an interesting idea. Had it been implemented from the start, things would be a lot different now.

Basically make it so after 3 minutes or so, the level periodically shakes and blocks turn into debris like in the Ice Caves when a Yeti King shakes the ground, and while it would be avoidable, it would take a lot more skill. I'd love to see the big guys play the game with that implemented.

I still don't think it's trivial, but I'm better at it now. Got Speedlunky last night, and made it to hell for the first time. Killed Vlad but died trying to get out of his tower. Gah!

This is why I'll never attempt top scores in the game. Ain't nobody got time for that. Many of the top runs go over an hour. Ghosting is my biggest problem with the game, really. Not an issue unless you're a score hunter, but it's a horrible mechanic if you are.

Yama's pretty easy tbh if you've got the right tools (sticky bombs and either the pitcher's mitt or a shotgun):

Then just fire the shotgun/throw sticky bombs at Yama's head directly.

Other items that simplify things a lot are the cape (normal one), the jetpack and the talisman that makes you immune to lava (that way you can trigger the vampires and jump in the lava... They'll just commit suicide).

Well actually that's exactly the same thing The Real Abed said. Teaches me for not reading the thread.

Oh man, worst end to a run ever. I didn't realise when you spawned using the ankh inside the statue that it actually takes a second for the hedjet to spawn and drop at your feet. I thought you automatically 'had it'. So I was just mashing L1 and left the stage before the bloody thing spawned.

Shouldn't even be possible, imo, but what a lol-worthy way to mess up. I had 40 bombs and the jetpack, too :(

Don't fell bad, I think that has happened to almost everyone exactly once.

So, I've played this game for a few hours and love it. However, my record is 3-1 or level 9. This game really reminds you of what old school gaming is all about. I have never been punished so hard in my life and keep wanting more. My ego still can't take watching people play this game, though. Feel like a dumbass.

Another one recently: found the Black Market entrance in the jungle right next to the regular exit, I've plenty of resources and have been ghosting since 1-2... and I take the wrong exit:(

Thing is that all the game demands is time. After 100 deaths, I was still dying to the first couple of bats and spiders. After 300 deaths I could make it to Olmec every so often. After 500 deaths I can make it there a lot of the time, and got the Speedlunky achievement and went to hell and everything.

Even if you're not good at games, just putting time into this one will make you good at it since the controls themselves are so simple. It's all about knowing how to deal with each situation.

Oh yeah that was a horrible moment for me too.

Actually laughed out loud at that. I've nearly done this a couple of times. The worst for me is when I'm going to sacrifice a pug to Kali and run past the exit like a braindead zombie. Where'd my pug go? Fuck!

Speaking of stupid mistakes, do not attempt to sacrifice a live man-eater plant. I stunned it RIGHT next to the altar and thought I could plop it on quick. That sucker woke up immediately when I picked it up.

Has Spelunky on PS4 been a bit weird for people since 2.0? Is there some way 2.0 could have fucked it up?

Basically, in the dailies, I keep seeing my friend's deaths but they're wrong. Like a guy died to a Tiki Trap which wasn't even there. Then on the leaderboards my friends aren't listed as if no one has played it. And this was my leaderboard today after the daily:

You have to be fast. Super fast. Best if you can knock them out while on the altar or right onto it. If you're not confident, don't even try. lol

They're only worth 2 points in Kali's favor so it's not really worth it unless they're the only thing you can find. All the cavemen and tikimen are worth the same amount. Vampires are also worth only 2 points. As is the Devil, which is weird since he's a pain in the ass to take on anyway.

Yeti however are worth 4, and can be knocked out twice before death, but if they wake up, you're pretty much boned so you need to learn the timing of their stunning and have a jetpack. (Lucky day if there happen to be a bunch next to the altar)

Scorpions are worth 4 points too, but Scorpion Flies are worth 6 (Probably since they only exist in the last area before Olmec and thus are a last chance) but both only have one knock out cycle before they die and don't leave a corpse. Hawkmen and the shopkeeper are also worth 6 alive. The shopkeeper is as huge a risk as the Yeti is as if he wakes up, you're dead. You'd have to get extremely lucky to knock him out in the first place without killing him, and pick him up within those few seconds and get him onto the altar without him waking up and then wait the few milliseconds before Kali accepts it.

Now Crocmen are a challenge. They can't be knocked out easily. Since if they get hurt, they teleport wildly. And if you do stun them, they will wake up almost immediately. So literally the only way to get any points is to somehow stun them on the altar, which is near impossible. But they're worth 8 points if you can. Though by this point you've probably already gotten up to Kapala status and are probably close to Invigoration so it's best to look elsewhere and not fuck around with a crocodile.

Also worth 8 points and hard to knock out and sacrifice alive is the Black Knight. But he carries his heavy crushing shield so unless you can wrest it from his hands and get him knocked out close enough to the throne, it's best to just sacrifice him dead.

And then there's damsels, helping hands and other players who are also all worth 8 points.

Rewards:
8 points: A random item from a list of certain items
Climbing Gloves or Pitcher's Mitt or Spring Shoes or Spike Shoes or Cape or Spectacles or Bomb Paste or Compass
If you have a cape, you won't get another one
If you have all of these items, you get a jetpack
If you also have a jetpack, you get a box of bombs
16 points: Kapala which will let you drink blood and gain health for every 8 blood drops
32 points: 8 hearts added to your health

Basically, get lucky enough to have two levels in the mines with altars and damsels and you can have a Kapala really early. Couple it with an early jetpack, hopefully from a random crate, and you're set to take on the underworld. Just find yourself a shotgun.

If you destroy an altar, it takes 16 points off your score
If your score goes below 0, the first time spiders will be summoned
If you destroy a second, you have to go through the game with a ball and chain
After a 3rd destroyed altar, you get a ghost immediately upon entering levels (Including Olmec's lair. Not sure if it will also show up in Yama's room. Don't think so since it would mean you would get $220,000 for Yama's treasure instead of $140,800.)

It's all gone a bit funny.

I often see messed up leaderboards on vita but thought that's because it's usually near the time the new daily starts. It might sort itself out later, but annoying if it's showing you their deaths from the wrong day too.

Speaking of stupid mistakes, do not attempt to sacrifice a live man-eater plant. I stunned it RIGHT next to the altar and thought I could plop it on quick. That sucker woke up immediately when I picked it up.

I think they stay asleep for less time if they eat something. I've never had a problem sacrificing them if I'm right by an altar, but try to ignore them otherwise.

I had maybe my favorite stupid death yet today. I went to throw a bomb at a big spider but it bounced off the ledge underneath him and came back to knock me out and of course stopped right on me so I couldn't get away. So much for that jetpack I found in a crate on 1-1.

For those who do Hell Runs consistently, which I already do after many many deaths playing this game, what are ways to make the game more difficult?

I think Ghosting is a bore beyond tears, so I'm trying to continue to do runs that make the game harder.

Speedrunning, 1-health runs, limiting the amount of bombs and ropes you carry (I respectively prefer 15 and 10 max), eggplant runs where you control both characters in co-op with a couple of honor rules attached (like avoiding him dying and not sacrificing him to Kali), not picking up the jetpack, et cetera.

For the mines and temple levels, if you need to sacrifice something alive like a scorpion/scorpion fly or caveman/hawkman, it's easy much safer just to use a broken arrow to stun them without them taking damage. Trigger an arrow trap and throw the arrow into a bat or something and get infinite uses of the broken arrow piece.

I'm sure something there will take your fancy...

My very first playthrough on the PS4 version haha:

Getting 74% completion after one playthrough feels pretty good. I was sooo close to getting the high scorer trophy too...

not even a stealth brag

I've just started playing this again on Vita, and it's great, but I suck so much. Arrow traps are the bane of my life. I can't even beat the first world; I tend to get to the second or third stage and then die stupidly. How many is a typical number of runs before you get good? I've played and died about 60 times now. I adore the controls and I love the random level generation (probably the only game in which I like random levels), but I just don't seem to be getting any better at the bloody game!

Typically, you'll find yourself getting further and further each time you play, or learn how to deal with different things. Arrow traps can suck, but there are some ways to make them somewhat trivial. ALWAYS carry something in the mines. Rocks are good since you can hit enemies like bats or snakes with it from a distance, but a skull can work in a pinch too. The arrow traps just go off based on movement in front of them, so if you drop something so it passes in front of it, it triggers and you're in no danger of harm. Hell, even a damsel can be used as arrow bait, as they can take at least one before being killed. I *think* you can even carry a rat and have the arrow hit you(you'll be sent flying but take no damage). You CAN whip arrows out of mid air as well, but that requires rather precise timing.

Every level has tricks of the trade, so to speak, and once you learn them and get used to them, it makes progressing through the game easier. When you finally start seeing the jungle, you'll start noticing how much easier the mines seem to you.

yeah nothing stealthy about it. just kidding dude congrats :).
for some reason i do a lot worse on the ps4 version. I guess im just too used to the vita or something.

Like the Binding of Isaac, Spelunky is wonderful, challenging and different with every playthrough.

Both have special places in my heart.

Tried to do Ghosting. Got bored and didn't enjoy it.

Still haven't managed to get past the Temple... So annoying I hate this game so much!
I will go back to it soon enough.. Can't get enough

??? I love the visual stye. I don't think it looks like Flash. I usually stay away from Flash-based games, or games that look like they're in Flash. Now Binding of Isaac looks like a Flash game. Then again the original was a Flash game.

So we've been playing Spelunky on PS4 (great game!) and we're up to, I dunno, 150 deaths or so, and recently it's been saving much slower than usual. Is this common?

Today was really weird, I loaded the game up and started the Daily Challenge and straight away I started getting Journal entries unlocked messages, I quickly shut the game down and started it up again. This time it hung on the cartoon welcome screen thing, then I restarted once more and it went back to normal. Then when I did finish the daily it took ages to save. All on Vita btw and I haven't played any other versions recently.

However generally speaking it does sometimes take a while to save, I assume it's when it has trouble connecting to the online leaderboards or something like that.

I don't think it's the game, it's probably PSN. When you finish a run it checks leaderboards and stuff and when PSN is in one of moments when it sucks (any day ending in "Y") then it takes a bit longer. I've noticed it's been a little slower since 2.00 too.

You're completely wrong. The visuals are amazing. This is not a Flash game. You can tell it's not a Flash game. Flash could never pull off the detail this game has. What's unappealing about them? The art style is amazing. It looks so much better than the original GameMaker version which was even more limited than Flash would have been.

To be fair, at first I thought it looked a bit janky too. Not in the detail or art or anything, just in little aspects like the way the character holds items. It didn't really take long to get over that, though, and I wouldn't have it any other way now.

"Looks like a flash game" really needs to stop being a criticism of anything which happens to be 2D though, it's just stupid.

I wasn't a big fan of the art at first, but I certainly didn't think it looked like a Flash game (because I know what Flash looks like). Over the years though it has really grown on me and now I love it.

finally got myself to the point where i can get to olmec from the start of the game. only took like 400 deaths. haven't been able to beat him yet though. but my last two daily runs i was able to get to him with a ton of resources, just couldn't set him up properly for the fall without getting squashed :(

took a while to get there though. i found that unlocking the shortcuts in order to do practice runs starting from the different areas was a great way to build that muscle memory for each area and the different threats that present themselves. i guess i'll look into trying hell after i beat olmec at least once

The new PSN update is interesting, I think it was intended to deliver the replay function to the Vita and maybe PS3.

I played the daily challenge on the Vita, got an option to replay which worked fine, then I tried somebody else on the leaderboard and the game didn't like that, I tried mine again and it wouldn't play I just got a "check network settings" style message.
I tried restarting the game but when I went back to the leaderboard my score was gone as was any kind of replay option for anybody else.

If you'd have told me when I first bought the game on 360 in 2012 that I would have this game on five different platforms (thank you cross buy!) and that there'd still be semi frequent updates two years on I would have laughed. <3 mossmouth

Replays are now up and running on the Vita and I assume the PS3, it's great that they added that feature, I really didn't expect them to.

I chose to celebrate the occasion by trying a new and idiotic method of robbing a store resulting in my early demise.
