After following all the amazing projects here, I thought I'd share my own. It's called Hollow Knight, a 2D action adventure in a surreal bug-infested world. I've been developing it with two other friends. Our inspiration for the game is Zelda 2, Faxanadu and Metroid.
Wow! Looks great!

I've been working on finishing up Super Sec Soccer (it comes out this Thursday), little tings in the code and stuff like dust on ball bounces. Also been trying to get it some attention through the press (lots of emailing). And I've just launched the Greenlight page, because you gotta have one of those. Curious to see how that goes.

So if you like the game, please vote and tell your friends and stuff :)

And voted!

Voted! Hope Greenlight goes well for you. How is the response from the press so far?

Thanks a lot! Getting the press interested is hard, man. I mailed a bunch of outlets telling them about the game and it's coming release. Including a preview build and presskit with extra info, screenshots and video's. It's only been a couple of days (plus it's weekend now) but so far a few have placed the press release like basic statement, so that getting out there. (One of 'm misquoted me saying Linux en Mac version where already a thing. Oops) But so no real review yet, I know a few of 'm would have a look, so I'm hoping a few will pop up next week. Which would be nice, around the time of the release.

I also send a couple of lets players the preview build, and there's a couple of 'm that have already released videos. That's super cool.

Now with the Greenlight page live, I have to do a new round of mailing everyone, so lets see if that has some more effect :)

I feel super inferior about pixel art looking at the amazing stuff recently -- great job everyone. :p The Hollow Knight is especially nicely done, looks like something out of a GBA/SNES game.

More screenshots from CoalMaster (https://twitter.com/thecoalmaster)

A bunch of work went into multiple characters and an extensive customization system these past few weeks:

Keep in mind that this game runs on mobile, so the screenshots look a bit edge on desktop

And yeah, getting any press interested is a tough thing, but keep us posted on how it's going and I'll try to get you some reference numbers from our Greenlight once I get back.

We got you guys some concept art for this #screenshotsaturday:

Working long hours has taken it's toll and I'm in for 7hr drive and 7hr volunteer shift tomorrow so good night and I'll share my experiences with Slush and Finland's biggest yet IGDA evening once I come back from the road. Take and care and make awesome stuff in the mean time!

Another screenshot saturday, though this time it's not a crosspost!

Since Honey was featured as a character in Cook, Serve, Delicious: Battle Kitchen, it only seemed fair to feature one of their cooks in Honey - and here he is in the audience! He's the first of the new audience members for Carrion Wind's match, I have several more to go through - though none as fun as this one, and no other guests... for now?

There's some truly amazing looking stuff on this page! (AriEX2, Paz, Zotty, Vark, well everyone: really good stuff you all!)

I should spend more time in this thread, it's seems to move so fast recently!

Anyway:

Hey guys, I'd like to ask you for help, if you can.

Past Memories (the game I helped develop) is being sold in the Amazon App Store by another studio and we never authorized that.

If you have some time, please report it. Choose the "Agent" option and follow the rest. In the "Additional Information" field, please put our official Past Memories site.

Thank you for your help!

what's the best way to report this? I don't see any obvious "report" type links on the page.

There should be some way to contact the Amazon digital sales department directly. They used to have a representative who posted on GAF a long time ago, but now I'm guessing you'd have to go through the Amazon site itself.

Yeah, I was going to put that link but somehow I forgot. I'll edit my post now. Thanks for everybody already reporting. Also contacted someone I know at Amazon and wrote an one star review. You can all report it using the "Agent" option.

Finally got some .gifs, was having issues with gifcam a while ago. The idea here is to take a photo of the ghost in the short amount of time it appears. The light shining on the ghost and projecting its shadow is the visual cue. Took longer than expected to get that natural pendulum effect of the swinging light (using code as opposed to a hinge joint).

Looking to get into developing my first game over the upcoming winter break. Have a bunch of game ideas for mobile and desktop type games. Looking through the engine list it would seem that c4 would be the best for desktop and unity for mobile?

Unless you come from a highly programming oriented background but have just never dabbled in games before, I'm not sure C4 would be your best option for a first game engine choice.
If you're planning on using Unity for mobile anyway, it would be hard to argue against just using Unity for both for all sorts of sanity checking reasons.

background is in c++, plan to expand to java and c# pretty soon though. I thought that c4 was a great learning tool? Mostly because of how well documented it was.

I just realized that we still haven't updated the posts at the start of the thread with any information on Unreal Engine 4 (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=789941).

For comparison, instead of $750 for C4, you can get full C++ source code access for UE4 for $19, then 5% of revenue if you make and sell a game. UE4 is actively developed and supported, and the community is good as far as I know. I would recommend at least investigating it if you're considering a desktop (or even potentially mobile) game with high-end graphics.

For UE4, you can either stop your subscription and keep using the engine, or keep paying $19 a month for continued engine updates.

Yeah, only bad thing about the C4 is the really high entry price.

What's the best learning resources I can get for game development? That handmade hero video series that's starting soon seems pretty ace

A well documented sourced engine primarily teaches you about engine development though - its like taking an automotive maintenance course to improve your driving.

Engine source code access is incredibly useful if you want to roll your own solutions for unsupported features, but are you likely to be pushing an engine to do things it was never designed for in your very first game?

If you are planning on doing something the engine you've chosen was never intended for (so, something like making a point and click adventure game in CryEngine for example) there's probably a strong argument to say you picked the wrong engine in the first place.

If you're coming from a primarily programming based background, and you are also planning on doing very non-standard game design that isn't particularly a good fit for any existing engines, there's also a strong argument that maybe you should investigate something like SDL and create your own engine instead, which would end up with incredibly efficient code because you only include things you actually need.

Hello, I just wanted to share a little screenshot about my futur race menu.

Because I often test in window mode to keep an eye on a debug window I haven't really noticed that the tabs were so big so I think about reducing their size.
Logic for players, ia and tracks are mostly made and just need some fix.

Now I mostly need to make more than twenty vehicles to complete my deal menu before going in the race menu.

Tim wrote up a really informative overview of how our Venom boss was designed and built, it's a bit longer than makes sense to post in its entirety here but you can read it over on the blog if it interests you: http://www.assaultandroidcactus.com/2014/11/producing-venom-part-1.html

venom_concept_2.jpg
Seeing a massive creature on screen is impressive but doesn't have to be technically difficult if the behaviour is simple. Large creatures are tricky when they can navigate surfaces as you need ways to keep their limbs planted and procedurally turning the character looks terrible because their extremities move too fast, without any lag or follow-through that a large entity would have. Venom however sits under the stage, which gave me a lot of control over when and how he reacts.

There are similar pieces on the last two bosses as well, hopefully being open about this kind of development process is helpful to someone :D

Well, one day in, I'm at 6% on my way to the top 100. No idea what that means, but that doesn't sound to bad. Especially since there hasn't been a lot of press coverage so far. I'm hoping for a bit more in the coming week. That should bump it up a bit.

Right now 43% of the votes are "yes", which isn't bad at all, considering the game isn't for everyone (and the average top 50 game has 46% positive votes). The total amount of votes is at 692 at the moment by the way, with 951 visitors. So people really do vote and not just browse.

So yeah, not sure what it all means, but so far so good I guess :)

Here is my 7DFPS game, it is called Shootmephrenia and in it you have to shoot no one, no one but yourself! It is obviously not as easy as it sounds. You have to reflect the bullet on panels so that it comes back to you and then you have to catch it.

You can download it for free here:

Here is a gif that shows also new the picture in picture views I added today.

I only wanted to fix a exploit but then I added that and it turned out really cool.

It is the first project that I used the new Unreal Engine for. I learned a lot while making it, especially lots of Blueprint stuff which can be really tricky but also allows it to quickly prototype. I bumped into lots of problems along the way, especially with the ragdoll physics but maybe that is also just a bit buggy in the engine currently .

Hi guys, I think I posted in this thread once, but I can't remember.
I'm an animator on this game Due Process, which is a tactical FPS in the vein of R6 and SWAT. Just wanted to show some stuff off. :)

Here's the cops walk cycle
Critiques are welcome

Here's a good preview to show where we're at on art
Cop and Environment

Here are some snap shots of cool stuff we've been working on

Different heads and skins for the criminals

Btw Davision, Shootmephrenia is hilarious. I like it a lot.

Just wanted to pop in and let anyone that was interested know that GunWorld is available now for $4.99! We're thrilled to have put our first game out the door, the feeling of seeing a project like this through to the end is pretty indescribable.

I dig the low res textures on the models. It gives it a nice throwback to Doom and such. Good job on pulling it off!

We even have some background visuals pulsing and phasing based on the music :D

Next up is going to be unlockable bonus elements and the final two stages, it's amazing how much more 'complete' the stage select world makes the game feel and I'm pretty confident in how the game will be finishing up now.
Loving how dynamic this is! Cactus looked very polished when I first saw it.

Started working on a couple of new stages this week, last few weeks I rewrote a lot of code and it was time to do something else again.

Pretty happy with the results so far. The first one is supposed to be a moving stage, the idea is that the platforms are trains of some sort of vehicle. One of the things that I want to build are stage events and with this stage stuff will be flying around that you have to dodge. But you can turn those events on or off.

And I started working on this concept for a stage yesterday:

Thanks :) Glad that so far the response is positive about the pixel art I create. Have a lot to learn but getting in the groove a bit.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for how to create a website to promote your game? At the moment I only have a blog but not really a proper website for Horizon Danger. Is wordpress mostly used for this?

For reference Im talking about something like the front page of Ghost Song :) http://www.ghostsonggame.com

That's what I'm using and what Matt's using, I'd guess. If he's not, WordPress can very easily do it, so he might as well be.

Your pixel art is indeed amazing. At the least, the color theory is breath-taking. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I'd love to follow you on an art site if you have one(dA, pixiv, etc. :)

There's loads of Wordpress excellent FREE templates to create a website with. Plus adding widgets to buy your game/soundtrack/merch and managing entries is so damn easy in Wordpress it's highly recommended.
Don't bother building a website from scratch if you don't have to.

Wordpress has tons of great add ons that easily let you implement a captcha system for comments(recommended so you don't get slammed with spam) showing your latest tweets, etc. etc. etc.

I'm actually already using wordpress for my current website but uh let's call it a super brain fart since I didnt think about using that also for the website about the game itself.

Thanks for the suggestions, will look for a proper template :) I didnt think about using wordpress since I associate it more with blogs. One of those mondays.

OccamsBlender, I havent touched my drawing tablet for over a year now and have not updated any portfolio stuff online but you can see some 'recent' stuff over here http://www.stephancaffa.nl/?page_id=11

Need to update that section with art from Horizon Danger..

Yeah, you're art is great! And like others said, get wordpress. Or maybe just code it your self if it's a small site and you can't find a theme you like.

Dat pixeldat from Dotty love it!
And Keby's 3D retro models are inducing my PS1 nostalgia, that looks beautiful :')
Shootmephrenia looks very cool, the environmental text looks effective
Holobunnies looks so adorably badass
Cactus has one of the coolest level select screens i've seen.

I've finally got a new beta for Super Pokemon Eevee Edition out :D
(It's a pokemon fangame set in the "2nd generation" that combines pokemon with final fantasy mechanics and a really epic story about saving the world from transitioning to the 3rd generation)

Such a relief cause this one took 7+ months to do, having a fulltime job really grinds progress to a halt :/

Latest Version: Beta 0.74 (November 2014)

This new version of the game goes midway through Chapter 5.

Gym5 - Defeat Morty!
Silph Tour - Take a tour through Silph Co.
Pickaxe - Break Rocks
Stat Changing Attacks are now more useful
Academy Challenge - Get a second starter Pokemon
Pokedex - Use to see Pokemon Stats
Shiny Data - Convert your Pokemon into Shiny
Redesigned Hypervisor Domains

is this a stencyl game, because this problem looks familiar XD must at least be box 2d. I've had similar issues.

looks great though!

Unity, if the app icon is any indication.

Not sure if it's Box2D, but I remember being very unimpressed when I tried that for a platformer last year.

According to wikipedia, Unity2D, Construct2, Stencyl, and GameMaker: Studio all use Box2D.

On that note, what open-source, commercial-friendly alternatives are there for physics engines? Brief google searching brings up "Chipmunk" and "Bullet". I wonder if Box2D may actually be a robust engine, but potentially difficult to set up to operate properly.

Right. I gave Box2D a shot when GameMaker first implemented it. It seems great for physics-based games like Angry Birds or LittleBigPlanet, but for my own game I'm rolling my own physics and collision handling.
