Don't know if anyone else remembers Jill of the Jungle but as a kid I really liked it. Made by Epic back in 1992.

Aaawwww, my childhood's favourite game! Beat it so many times. Been coming back to it on Dosbox occasionally, too. Such a charming platformer.

Another classic I grew up on:

Without a doubt, Cryo's Dune from 1992. Incredible blend of adventure game and light strategy/management. Nothing else has really touched this one for me. Also available on SegaCD.

Wrote a big spiel on why it's such a crucial game a while back, if anyone needs long-winded goading.

The one I remember playing the most was probably Manic Karts:

Also we had a pinball game I can't remember the name of. It was like wavy tie-dye backgrounds with silver rails and I think there was a "90s alien" on the box. That was quite good too.

My best gaming memories were on DOS:

Star Control 2, this game was so amazing, I mean look at this map:

Each one of these dots represent solar systems, and you could explore each one. that's right, each one of them.

The game was so influencial, it inspired the Mass Effect series, I mean come on:

I kinda feel bad for people who never experienced DOS games, especially those who lived 90s and used consoles only. They missed so much.

Good recommendations from DOS era here already. One that came up to my mind instantly was:

Ultima Underworld 1+2 - GOG

Ultima_underworld_1_screenshot.png

-

Loads of good point'n'click games on that era, but one most memorable and replayed on my PC was:
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders - one of those lost Lucasarts gems which we're still waiting arrive to GOG.

Intentionally didnt include the title, because if You dont know this game, You are a bad person anyway :)

YES!
Best Settlers and the best rts puzzler ever!
This, Civ 1, Stunts, Dune 2 and Space Hulk (first, top down one) was my introduction to pc gaming when I was 9 years old. Spent soo much time with them it's silly.

There are so much more I remember. My older cousin and my father pretty much got us shit ton of PC games to play.

Master of Magic and Stunts in the first 15 posts? Well done GAF, well done indeed.

I'll add Dark Legions:

It was very unique, with turn-based strategic battles:

But real-time top-down action combat to resolve the battle whenever two units met!

Doom
Lands of Lore
Bards Tale
Might and Magic
so many great DOS games over the years, although I certainly don't miss messing around with sound card settings (IRQs, etc...) as that was a real pain and made me question why I got a Gravis Ultrasound rather than a SoundBlaster.

No mention of jetpack yet? This game was awesome! Probably among my most played games ever :) I mostly played the christmas special for some reason though.

Yep, played this one with my older sister. Good times.

Wasn't mentioned yet, Magic Carpet.

I really hope this gen brings another engine with advanced terrain deformation. I had so much fun just screwing around in MC summoning vulcanoes and sinking enemies in the sea.

How could I forget about that one! So ahead of its time.

Too many people do, unfortunately.

Let's hope that happens. Proper implemention of terra-forming is crucial though. Just imagine a spiritual successor with multiplayer and good AI.

Ah, so many memories! Mucking around in autoexec.bat and config.sys.

Some of my favorites are:

- Monkey Island series
- Maniac Mansion
- Day of the Tentacle (DoTT)
- Gabriel Knight series
- Quest for Glory series
- Space Quest series
- Alone in the Dark
- X-wing
- Tie Fighter
- X-wing vs Tie Fighter
- Wing Commander: Privateer
- Tex Murphy series
- Star Trek: 25th Anniversary

This list only scratches the surface. So many good games (and sooooo many bad ones). Thankfully you can purchase most of these online now.

It's such a shame that some of them you have to go to pains to get and replay (buy the CDs if you're lucky, get it working in an emulator like DOSbox or Boxer, then adjust the settings so you're not flying all over the screen!). It's nice that LucasArts (Disney) has opened up their back catalog for digital download.

Jetpack actually has a sequel in development from the original author:
http://www.jetpackhq.com/

Unfortunately it's now significantly overdue (this was a kickstarter back in 2012), but a web version is playable in the browser, and you can pay for beta access to the full version as well. It's very much like the original game, but that's not bad, the original is great!

This was my favorite game for a looooong time, I loved the weapon/money management. It wasn't until Worms 2 that I felt any game truly dethroned it.

I loved scorched earth so much.

A huge favorite game of mine back on DOS was Battledrome.

Ya, I'm glad that my parents purchased a PC in '90-91 rather than getting me an SNES. The whole pnc adventure genre would be absent from my memory + my typing skills and command line knowledge would be utter garbage.

Edit:
