Are Ubisoft the new top dogs when it comes to open world graphics?

Ewww open world Ubisoft games are so static and lifeless it's not even close to being the best. Most of their games look great in screen shots but i'll be damned if i'm gonna play through any of them.

Farcry 4 does look pretty good however, would really like to play this and see it in action.

Also Ubisoft has already released 3 open world games this gen, lets atleast give some of the other developers a look-see before you decide they are the 'best'. Atleast wait till GTA6, I think the answer will be pretty clear then.

Anyone can make a good looking game if it runs @ 20fps. GTA V is a cross gen port and outdoes WD. Far Cry, AC and WD are all dead worlds. Lifeless Ai, TONS of pop in. Collect a thons

Yeah, I have been playing Far Cry 4 for the last couple days and the world is anything BUT lifeless and there is hardly any pop in at all. I mean, shit, I was walking down a road when a rhino attached some men in a jeep, knocked it over and they spilled out shooting at it. Right after they killed it and were celebrating a goddamn leopard jumped out and ate them. All the while, monkeys are scrambling all over the place and eagles are trying to eat my face.

Is it rue the foliage doesn't move when interacted with in FC4?

That's false. I've only played via Keys to Kyrat so far (awaiting my copy in the mail) but they move when you walk through them and it's even more obvious when your co-op partner does it.

Unity's graphics kinda blew my mind when I started playing. It looks very impressive.
I'm really looking forward to The Witcher 3 and how that will compete with it.

That's like 5 more ACs and FCs away :p

Haha yea, I have seen my mate play about 4 hours of Assassins Creed Unity and no doubt it is the best looking game I have ever seen (so far), but I would really need to see another open world game on current gen platforms from another top developer to make a proper comparison.

All i know is that with GTAV looking the way it does on last gen, any other developer really doesn't have a hope in hell in coming close to what these guys might pull off on PS4/Xbone.

Not that GTV looks bad, but I feel that Unity looks way better.

Smoothly?

No way, videos or I don't believe it. That looks like a photo realistic G&Y Bagel.
the window reflections give it away

They will be once The Division comes out. But CDProjekt Red's Witcher 3 will be an amazing open world game too.

Very true, they will own the generation by the end I'm sure. But at the moment...not so sure! True again that it's early, this gen gonna be good.

Is it even fair to be asking this question? The only other non-ubisoft open world games that are currently out are all crossgen games/rereleases. Seems a bit moot to even compare right now.

Pretty much this. Reminds me of the olympics where the first one out places top position on the scoreboard. Feels good for a short while, I guess? So let's clap for him.

Well shit... the OP more or less sold me on Far Cry 4. I didn't much like 3, though, but that was more due to the setting, characters, and story.

But yeah, Unity is probably the most graphically impressive game I've seen, so they kind of win by that alone.

Ubisoft are shitfuckers and they totally deserve the backlash they're getting right now. But it's a goddamn shame that AC Unity is a casualty of that. I played it on PS4 and based on my own personal experience with it, the complaints are ridiculously hyperbolic to the point where I have to wonder how honest they were. I spent about 30 hours on it, and I never experienced what I would call a game breaking glitch. Pop in and NPCs changing appearance was only noticeable when I remembered to go out of my way to look for it. There were a few occasions where NPCs were fucked up, stuck in geometry, floating along down the street instead of walking, stubbornly trying to walk through solid objects. I think there were two instances where my controls stopped functioning during combat. It definitely has too many bugs for a "final release" piece of software. So did AC3. Ubisoft suck for that and I hope they've learned a lesson. But despite the bugs, I had a great time playing Unity. In the future I expect lots and lots of "I picked up Unity super cheap yesterday, and holy fucking shit it's amazing. I thought it was supposed to be a broken piece of dogshit. I'm loving it! So much better than people said." posts.

And I do think it has some pretty fucking amazing graphics. The world is bursting at the seams with random interiors, and everytime I go inside one I'm amazed at the visual effects of sunlight blooming in through windows and doorways. Never seen anything like it in a game.

The only Far Cry I ever played was the first. Only in the last few months have I been even slightly tempted to check out FC3.

You had me at shitfuckers.

Unity doesn't even look good on the consoles and I get sad every time someone posts a screen from that hot blurry mess.

The PC port looks good but you need a super computer to run it downsampled.

Why does it have to be downsampled? Is this the new max settings taken to a new extreme or something?

Unity looks gorgeous even on modest hardware and below max settings. My below minimum spec GTX 670 and an i5 can hold a perfectly stable 33.3 ms frame time with the right settings on this supposedly broken game. This is the first game to make me say wow on my PC in a while. The AO in this game is sublime.

Yes. I believe so.

With the new AC:Unity on the PC -- there is no denying that it is the best looking game to grace the home. Now, the big question is because of the huge backlash from the game, will Ubisoft tone down future games? That remains to be seen.

The game's should be judged on their best playable appearances for thread alike this, which means PC for Unity. Yes, they are the best in visuals thanks to Unity.

I personally thought Second Son looked just as good.

I have SS and I don't see what all the hype is over this game. Yes, it has beautiful particle FX but that's all it has. The FX don't even cast shadows onto the ground. The overall city, animation (very clunky for the player), boxed buildings, and mediocre vehicles don't make this game even compare to some of the more recent games that have come out this fall. Dragon Age looks miles better than SS. So does GTA5 and FC4.

Now we wait for SS screenshots in response where DOF obscures 70%+ of the actual screenshot.

Most definitely not, Ubisoft really sucks at pushing out LODs in their games. No wonder a modded Watch Dogs had that near depth of field effect on by default.

I'm currently playing through AC Unity on the PC and it's definitely one of the best looking games I've ever played. My system isn't even a super rig or anything, but it still looks amazing at decent fps. I find myself taking a million screenshots as I play which is so distracting, lol.

Yes both games look great. Far Cry's nVidia godrays are pretty cool.
AC Unity's detail, diversity and true-to-life environment can be astonishing at times.

GTAV looks good but it looks like an enhanced GTAV from the old consoles.
Infamous is nice too but it's mostly empty looking. The effects are nice and that's where I think it shines. Speaking of shine, the everything in the game (street lights, car lights, effects) has a bloom on it. It's eye-catching.

Also, Crysis 3.

Not really open world though. It has large areas but it's not true open world.

Some people are really underestimating how amazing Unity looks on a capable PC. Especially in the daylight the lighting effects are just unbelievable, and then there are the insanely detailed interiors.

Ubisoft really outdid themselves with the visuals. I've been trying some other, older open world games and I'm shocked by how big the difference is.

That said, can't wait to see GTA V on my PC.

WD and Unity look good, but they are not even remotely close to the level of detail in GTA. Real next gen GTA will be crazy, but GTA V still looks better to me than those soulless Ubi formula games.

Not really fair to compare frame rates between a remaster vs a truly next gen game like Unity. I guarantee that the next game from Rockstar will perform poorly, as they always do.

When GTA V comes out on PC we can re evaluate. The PS4 version looks fine, just needs 60 fps, HBAO+, up the poly count on vehicles, and gobs of AA.

I just wish Ubisoft had taken more time to optimize the console versions of Unity. I know that it would not be as beautiful as the PC version still, but I honestly believe the consoles can do better with the right tradeoffs.

What character in GTAV has hair simulation or facial animation as good as the main characters in Unity? What buildings are as dense and intricately detailed? How are the cloth physics better? How is the character animation better?

Daaaamn that Ubisoft defense force.

The target hardware of GTA V was last-gen consoles, development started after GTA 4 in 2008.

What they pulled off is just insane.

A more accurate comparison would be AC3/Black Flag - GTA V.

You are correct. But you should be telling that to the people who are comparing it to Unity.. which there really is no comparison tbh.

Unity easily takes the cake with it's lighting. It's actually making it quite a bit harder to enjoy other games after seeing it in use. I like to stop and take in the scenery a lot when playing games and with Unity it feels like I'm staring at a model being rendered in Blender/Maya at times.

GTAV is currently holding my attention and whilst the game is still incredibly fun to play the lighting feels archaic going from one game to another. The textures are also rather unimpressive particularly with the addition of the fps view. I was looking forward to ragdolling in first person but after a few times I now dread it instead, goddamn is that road ugly up close.

Yea, but with all the people stating that the detail is better in GTAV than Unity without stating reason why you'd have to wonder if that's actually their opinion or just a driveby post from the same people who denounce any positive thing about Ubisoft games, especially Schenmu, who actually does take the chance to denounce Ubisoft games every chance that he gets. Something I noticed in Unity, npcs hold hands and talk while walking, now, if I were to say run straight into them, bump them, and make them lose contact, they both stand and look around for each other and reconnect to continue on their day. Arno has a ton of different variations just for the act of jumping and landing. Because naturally a person wouldn't jump and land the exact same way everytime. There's a ridiculous shit ton of detail in Unity and WD. Rightfully so, because they made like 14K animations for Unity, 7K of which were specifically for npcs.

I don't know what you're smoking, but GTA V doesn't look anywhere near as good as Unity, it's a cross gen remaster and it tells.

If we're talking on a purely graphics standpoint (which is what this thread is about), the level of detail in Unity's environments and character models blows the other titles out of the water.

Aye, Unity is bar-none the most visually spectacular game period, let alone open-world, that I've played in terms of scope, lighting, and detail. Which is why I understand how it can be quite demanding, despite the hyperbole surrounding the game because some people don't have hardware quite up to the task without compromises elsewhere. I have Far Cry 4 as well which looks great, but it still doesn't compare to Unity.

What does this evasive and completely self-focused opinion on the nature of gameplay have to do with open world graphical prowess?
