The character design for The Order: 1886 is so good.

Or it's character design that's intended only to work in tandem with the story being told, rather than trying to communicate obvious traits before a word's been uttered.

Fair point, but even if that's the case the designs are so close to those of Assassin's Creed, and I just find them totally uninspiring. Good character design makes me want to get to know the character, and hopefully play as them. Blizzard have recently done an absolutely tremendous job of this with the Overwatch line up. I don't want to play as any of these characters.

Main character is Nicolas Cage.

Why hasn't Nic Cage done video game voice-overs ? He says yes to every turd of a script he lays his eyes on. He could be awesome as a video game character. Nobody does crazy and over the top as well as Cage.

On topic: the characters look boring as hell to me. They look like extras from a civil war movie.

They look great to me as well. Can't wait for the game. I think it's going to proof alot of people on this forum wrong, I'm sure. Ready at Dawn doesn't make bad games. The latest trailer looked absolutely brilliant as well. It looks far more interesting than any third person shooter I've seen in a while. The Victorian setting, Nikola Tesla, lycans, the creative guns, the gunplay and the incredible atmosphere. Can't wait to see more footage at the PlayStation Experience.

Yeah the graphics and art in this game look amazing.

I think people need to keep in mind that we've only really seen one, small section of gameplay. At every event they've demoed the same area too. The gaming press hasn't been all that excited about it, but really that doesn't mean a whole lot at this point as plenty of games have previewed poorly and turned out well.

Bottom line, RAD is a pretty competent studio and this may not end up being the greatest game ever, but I think it's safe to say it'll be solid at the very least.

The character design might be nice, but the game itself...no thank you.

Well that didn't take long.

I think this game has some of the best art direction I have seen in a long while. Despite being a period piece set during a dark and gloomy era everything just seems to fit.

I agree with this post.

People who hate this game are those who want just action all the time and multiplayer instead of single player story oriented action adventure game. Most of the people in Gaf want to discuss about action part of the gameplay elements only but not the story, history, characters more etc., When someone tries it won't get the big topics like sales, resolution wars etc.,

This game is about showing a history and how the characters in the game played the role to change it, but most of the people just want/expect to kill those half breeds with guns blazing all the time instead of using mind and move along with the story as needed which the developers intends to do.

is this supposed to be an alternative history zombie game

i'm not into zombie games period and that is the main reason i didn't get tlou. not even tlour.

Lack of minorities is troubling even if historically accurate

Historical accuracy seems like a meaningless concern in a game so heavily centered on fantasy elements. Nothing about a black person being there is less accurate than werewolves. The lack of minorities is almost certainly representative of the greater lack of representation in gaming and popular media in general.

That being said, maybe there will be greater inclusion shown in additional main characters outside of the squad they have focused on thus far. That doesn't seem terribly likely but its possible.

I have no problem with a game focusing heavily on story, but you seem to be forgetting that most people play video games to play, not to watch.

Looking at these characters I couldn't tell you a damn thing about them. Nothing about their design communicates their personality, background, profession, nothing. This is an example of really poor character design.

Exact contrary.
The character design tells us they are well taught persons, serving someone with weapons, they cure their bodies and their health so they are an above the average level of workers
They are clean, probably serve someone important, sure they eat all days in an historical period when that was not certain.
The woman can use oils and make ups, the men have enough time to cure their aspects and moustaches
Eyes look clever, they probably can read and speak in a period when 70% of the population probably couldn't
Character design is not overly done, looks natural and plausibile, men look like Sirs and woman doesn't look like a street hooker
So much class

I have to be honest, beyond the faux-period attire, I don't see a whole lot of similarity with the character design of AC. The faces and bodies shown in The Order are far closer to an everyman figure rather than a photogenic Peter Parker playing dress-up.

I guess what constitutes good character design is as subjective as anything else in gaming though. I like more of a blank slate; faces that I could pass in the street and fewer outright pointers of what's to unfold.

They have already confirmed there will be new game play at the PSExperience and it will be hands on.

Also if the Order PS4 theme is anything to go by the score will be epic.

Agreed they look very classy, quite different than the usual fare we get.

I really hope this game has immersive gameplay to go along with the visuals

It does thats what the developers want to do and this is the game I'm most interested after Bloodborne and UC4 next year. Developers interest about the history in the story is great and i want to immerse myself to that world just like Heavy rain and Beyond 2 souls.

Damn, you just schooled me! Not much that I can say about this other than that I still think they look boring as hell, haha

Well, they are historically accurate. Why include minorities in this game? Lol...

Disclaimer: I am a minority irl.

The designs look nice. I don't see the Assassins Creed comparisons at all but to each their own.

Can't get more generic than this for sure:

Alternate costumers and all that...

How long did it take you to complete the game? Could you post impressions?

lol

The designs aren't anything special to me. It is really rigid. They can improve to me though, depends on who each character turns out to be in the game. ACU does this type of period design and does it better.

And as a person of color you shouldn't build up the idea of people of color being in this game or being important. Most times when you do this in gaming you will end up disappointed.

Well games as a medium has more potential to tell a story and provide immersion than movies you know which has not exploited by the developers yet very well. Some of these are Heavy rain and Beyond 2 souls from PS3 which might not be big seller but they cater particular group of people who like the story and characters around it more with less gameplay and I'm one of them.

This game might not be targeted for big audience of action gameplay users (they have action in this game but balanced for telling story and immersion) but its got own audience too (which can be proved from Heavy rain and Beyond 2 souls sales) which might not be big but exists. I'm glad that Sony trusts and provides games for the games like me.

Designs are a nice blend of the period with trappings of their background. Visually they look more believable than average TPS protagonist.

Their status and intent is nicely communicated by their looks.

Good luck with thread OP the game has a dedicated gang of neighsayers out to grumble at every turn.

Really excited for the game despite it being the cool game to hate on. As a whole of what I've seen; the character design, art design, and lore look like the most interesting thing to come out of this gen so far after bloodborne
