2014 game that most lived up to the hype

Hey gaf,

So what game released in 2014 year lived up to your expectations? Which game had the tingling excitement, rabid speculation, and crazed fanbase-following yet still met or surpassed the hype?

I was initially going to say Bayonetta 2, but outside of hardcore gaming press and the 60-80k people who bought it in North America - was the hype really there?

I then jumped to Dragon Age, which is a follow-up to a less-than-loved sequel, and probably determined the future of the franchise. It had a lot riding on it. Then again, I havn't played it yet so I can't really comment - and it not appearing in the recent NPD is worrisome.

For me personally, Super Smash Bros met my level of hype - which I didn't expect it to.

I don't know why, but after the e3 tournament I was under the impression it was 'just another slow Brawl', and the lack of info made me worried it'd be delayed or launch without a lot of content. Not only did I enjoy some of the new modes, but the draw-a-level, netcode, and 8-player modes are incredible and add a lot to the series.

What say you neogaf? What game this year met your hype?

Tropical Freeze
's soundtrack
.

It was the glorious return of David Wise after god knows how any years. And he fucking knocked it out of the park.

Bayonetta 2, easily. Dragon Age certainly exceeded expectations after DA2, but Bayo takes the cake. Also Shovel Knight and South Park

Dragon Age Inquisition.

I've put 65 hours into it so far and I can't stop. Love the characters, tons of areas to enjoy and explore, combat is fun as hell. So damn good.

Bayo 2 and Donkey Kong for me.

Smash U didn't, but I don't think a Smash game will ever reach expectations for me again. Evil Within was disappointing, too.

Those were the only games I really hyped up this year.

Mario Kart 8. Visually stunning, online works great, and it's one of the most enjoyable entries in the franchise in years.

I'll also nominate Sunset Overdrive - never before have I see a game accurately reflect its' own CGI reveal trailer in the actual gameplay. So smooth, fun, and natural to traverse.

The Last of Us: Remastered

It probably does not count, but I did not play it on ps3. Decided not to once I knew it was coming to ps4. Boy did it live up to the hype. One of the best games I have played in a while. Even then, the multiplayer surprised me.

Does GTA count? The surprise (well until a month before release) first person mode elevated an already amazing game.

The Forest blew me away as an indie title from its reveal trailer. The constant updates just made the buggy wacky fun even better and I think it definitely lived up to (my) hype.

Mario Kart had me pumped to return to Nintendo, and from the little I've played I'm so happy to be back.

Bayonetta 2, MK 8, Smash, Ground Zeroes, Wolfenstein (my own personal hype), Dragon Age, Dark Souls 2.

I'm actually going to go with Smash 3DS. Smash on a handheld ended up even better than I ever dreamed, circle pad destroying aside.

Sunset Overdrive was everything I thought it would be, and more. Sadly, GAF as a whole seems to have not had much hype for it to begin with :(

Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game is huge but has never felt like a chore to play (well, maybe the Hinterlands a bit until I read this, lol). I've only just unlocked my Inquisitors specialty sub-class.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.

Yup, SO is one of my GOTY contenders.

FC4 and FH2 were also two that exceeded my expectations, though I wasn't near as hyped for those as SO.

Bayonetta 2 for sure.

Smash Wii U actually exceeded my expectations in a way; I didn't really expect awesome characters like Robin, Greninja and Shulk (I'm hella biased lol) to make it in, but they did! Brawl being a disappointment for me also helped lower my hype for Smash 4, but I really do love the game so far. My GotY still unless GGXrd blows my mind somehow.

The Last of Us remastered and GTA 5 on PS4.

Weird that they're both last-gen games but... what can I say. A lot of games disappointed me this year. Not to say the other games are rubbish but not many lived up to my own hype except these two.

Gotta stop overhyping then! jk haha :p Everyone says that 2014 was disappointing, but I played a ton of original non-port and non-remake games that I thought were pretty great this year. Just alot of the big AAA titles ended up disappointing, except Far Cry 4, that game came outta nowhere for me.

Mario Kart 8.

It was always looking beutiful and full of promise, but Nintendo knocked it out of the park and produced not only the best in the series, but one of the all time great racing games.

Only Daganronpa 1&2. Everything else fell short of living up to the hype for me. Well, I suppose if remasters count, TLOU lived up to the hype.

Bayonetta 2

Which is really surprising considering that I hyped it up to astronomical levels.

Bayonetta 2 and Smash U for me.

Bayonetta 2 or Dragon Age: Inquisition

Edit: Because I like to travel back in time.

Definitely Bayonetta 2.

FIRST FOUR POSTS NAIL IT

But yea it's nuts that the best games this year are Bayonetta 2, Smash, GTA5 and TLoU. In 2013 I would have bet my testicles that Dark Souls 2 would takeover free.

South Park Stick of Truth and Mario Kart 8.

South Park offered little to no challenge, but I loved every bit of it. I'm a huge fan, and it was like a love letter to us all. It was everything I could have asked for and more.

Kart has a myriad of problems, but it's just too fun to stop it from being great. Was worth the price of the Wii U, hands down.

Just too many choices, but you can't go wrong either way with these:

Shovel Knight
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS
Mario Kart 8

Now, I don't know how much hype it got, but they pretty much met my expectations, and they were high to begin with:

Bravely Default
Persona Q
