Why Nintendo's Wii U Might Be The Best Console To Unwrap Christmas Morning [BLOGGER]

Wii-U is the only current gen console I don't own. I am more tempted every day to get one.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/12/16/why-nintendos-wii-u-might-be-the-best-console-to-unwrap-christmas-morning/

...there’s only one console that just really screams “Christmas morning” to me, and that’s Nintendo’s Wii U.

If we were doing one of those handy comparison charts, the Wii U has plenty of significant disadvantages when placed next to PS4 or Xbox One. It’s essentially a last generation system in terms of horsepower, with graphics matching what we’ve come to expect from the PS3 and Xbox 360, but lagging behind the newer versions of those systems. And recently the console has seen a nearly complete collapse in 3rd party, non-partner support. While Nintendo still have connections that lead to joint projects like Bayonetta, 3rd party staples like Call of Duty, Madden and Assassin’s Creed have fled the system for good, and new hits like Destiny or Dragon Age will likely never make it to the console.

It’s a combination of these factors that leads to continued speculation that Nintendo would be better off in the software business, putting their well-received first party games on other consoles, and becoming an enormous software powerhouse without console hardware on their mind.

While I’m not totally opposed to that notion (and have even supported it from time to time), this is the time of year when I remember why it’s important Nintendo’s hardware still does exist. The Wii U is the only gaming device on the market that directly encourages local multiplayer, and the best games for the system are ones played with friends or family sitting next to you, not playing on their own console across town or across the country.

As such, when millions of Wii Us are opened Christmas morning (or handed out for Hanukkah), it’s really the only console a family can get which can be set up and have the whole gang playing in practically minutes. Older games like Nintendoland and New Super Mario Bros. U, or newer hits like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U were all designed to be played in groups. On Christmas, parents can play with kids, siblings can play with each other, friends can come over for holiday parties and play the new system. At a time where everyone is together, the Wii U is effectively the only console that can facilitate that. The PS4 and Xbox One can be plug-and-played as well, but it’s largely going to be a solo experience depending on the game.

Split screen gaming and local co-op isn’t completely dead. There’s definite fun to be had with a few Kinect dancing titles, and games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare have slid in split screen to at least one of its modes. And yet, that grand sense of local co-op community is inarguably the best on Wii U, where everyone uses an assortment of increasingly ridiculous controllers from the Gamepad to the Wiimote to the Pro controller to now even decade-old Gamecube controllers.

Perhaps this is some amount of nostalgia talking, but it made me sad when I grew up and Sony and Microsoft seemed determined to leave local co-op behind. Instead of having a friend over to play a game, I had to send him home to play on his own console over PSN or Xbox Live. When my gaming enthusiast friends would come over, there was little to actually do with the newest games we’d bought unless they’d brought their own console and TV with them. The only games we could actually play together were old ones like Halo 3 or one of the past Smash Bros. installments. Now that’s worse than ever, and local co-op is all but completely dead other than in a few multiplatform series like Borderlands, but most of the time its either stuck into a specific mode (COD’s Exo) or it simply doesn’t exist at all, even in games that encourage co-op (Dragon Age, Far Cry).

Obviously you don’t buy a console just for Christmas morning, so there’s plenty more to consider, but until Sony or Microsoft truly grasp the concept of family gaming and local co-op with friends, Nintendo is going to occupy a welcome niche in the console market, graphics and 3rd party support aside. I think it’s going to be a good holiday season for the Wii U, and its unique position in the market will help it stand out from nearly identical competition.

Of course.

Imagine opening a package with a Wii U, five of its best games, and a $20 download card.

You'd be ecstatic.

I kind of saw this coming

Its the classic Nintendo cycle at this point

It gets cheaper and it gets big Nintendo games

Everyone loves them again. Predictable and Classic Nintendo

Fuck me, how long have people been holding on to them?

Nah, there were plenty of these 'please buy a Wii U' articles last year too.

These 'why you should get wii u over x1/ps4' are increasing every day it seems.

Reality is it will do naff all. Marketing hasn't worked, and the perception of what Nintendo wanted wii u to be to what it is now has changed consumer opinion.

They need good games coming, which they have but very few obvious system sellers.
And they need to be competitive on price, which they aren't, atleast in UK, where ps4 and x1 bundles are dominating store poster space

Sure but its wasn't nearly as compelling and strong as it is now

Almost impossible to argue against at this point to

Smash has a powerful hold over my once again lol

I see everyone advocating for the Wii U so much, yet it still can't make a dent in the sales of its other competitors. Why is that?

thanks for the laugh
probably right, but any kid who knows they're getting a console for christmas who wakes up to unwrap the only one that can't play fifa or call of duty or have graphics better than their ipad is going to have a miserable day.

The people who contribute the most money to gaming are older. They may have kids, they may not, but local multiplayer isn't exactly a great selling point when you're an adult and your friends all have different schedules. Work a full shift, go home, eat dinner, spend time with significant other and/or kids, and when that's all said and done, you might have time to play a game that night but you're not going to call your friend at 10pm to come over, you'll just jump online if that's an option.

I remember getting a Wii for Christmas in 2007. I was 18 and felt like I was past the point of asking for big gifts like that, so I didn't bother. My parents told me to go open the closet to get something, and there it was.

If I didn't own a Wii U, and received one for Christmas, I'd be just as excited.

I'd say that, when talking about local multiplayer games, not mentioning Super Mario 3D World is a big omission??

Mainly because people who like Nintendo are not the majority market for games. The games market are people who like CoD, AC, GTAV, FIFA, etc.
Nintendo's stance on third party is ultimately hurting them in sales. The Wii proved to be a fluke because it was a fad, just like the Kinect.

Wii U is the next Dreamcast ... loved by many, bought by few.
Yeah, pretty much. The Dreamcast was so awesome but did not sell for anything.
I blame Sega during the Saturn phase. They screwed up any chance of redemption by that point.

I will say, agnostic of the quality of the games on each system, the Wii U probably has less day-one patching that would make it so the kid could actually play some games Christmas morning.

I imagine that, being a kid nowadays, hype levels are mitigated when you need to wait like 4 hours for the system to patch before you can play it.

Just FYI, it's Wii U, not Wii-U. Just like it's Xbox and not X-box. :)
sorry

That said, why do these articles only ever crop up around the Holidays? Why is this system the punchline to every joke on the cool kids' table except in November/December when everyone suddenly agrees it's awesome for a few weeks? How bizarre is this?

You can play the console without patching. The patching can also be downloaded in the background. Plus Nintendo servers has gotten better since launch.

I would love a Wii U for MK, Zelda and Bayonetta 2. However, the rest of the console itself leaves a lot to be desired. I'm one of those "if only I could do other things with it as well" people. Probably get an Xbox One or PS4 first as a result.

Saleswise, WiiU is tracking behind DC, and there are fewer compelling games on the system than the Dreamcast had at 2 years into it's life. That's not really a fair comparison, because DC's 3rd party support, games were cheaper to make back then, and DC had a lot of easy arcade ports thanks to the Naomi architecture.

Otherwise it's a pretty good analogy.

Holidays is when parents start gearing up for gift shopping and kids can expect to find their next consoles under the trees.

Smugness aside over "Wii U needing defending", this is a solid article.

I'm loving this WiiU comeback. Everyone hated it when it first came out and the the Dreamcast comparisons, sales numbers and general doom talk was the norm. And now it's the best console ever.

It's like the U stands for U-turn.

A good Wii U feature it very portable. very easy to travel with can take it to parties, we're the system shines

It's an opinion piece anyway. If it was one of their jouranlists, would that somehow make it more valid?

It might have been better researched for one. There are plenty local co-op games on both the PS4 and Xbox one. In fact both Manufacters released a tentpole release that have couch co-op as a big feature. Halo MCC and LBP3

Not to mention third parties like disney, the lego games, minecraft and a whole fuckton of indies.

There is no comeback.
