Canadian Gaming Deals and Discussion Thread 5: Much Ado Aboot Shipping

I'm going to Canada for a month long holiday in February. I will be visiting Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Does anyone have any recommendations on games shops to visit that aren't EB Games? I wouldn't mind checking out some retro stuff if there is anywhere with a good selection and reasonable prices. And are there any other comic/toy/pop culture stores that are worth checking out in these cities?

I'd definitely suggest checking out A&C Games. That said, this post is 100% bias as my friends own the place. They're great guys, though, and do quite a bit for the local competitive gaming community. Prices are up there but the selection is pretty huge. Everyone who works there is really friendly though. Definitely suggest checking it out, even if just to browse.

I might be able to help a fellow gafer out with a Majora's Mask New 3DS XL pre-order at cost. I have one right now but, might end up going with the regular edition. No promises but, if you can't get one anywhere else let me know....now if only I could find the limited edition version of the game le sigh.

If I can't get one from BB/FS I'd be very interested.

Has anyone ever used gameaccess.ca for rentals? Any thoughts?

I did for a bit, but didn't keep it. Most of the time, I'd just get games at the lower end of my queue, and it wasn't worthwhile.

I guess I'm gonna' have to buy a fucking charger for my New 3DS XL. I sold my 3DS, and figured the box would include a charger with this one, but stupid me for thinking that.

What's the best physical store to get an official one from?

I used it for a bit a couple years ago. Being in Vancouver, the wait time for game to be mailed from Toronto was wayyyyyy too long to justify the price. If you're closer to there, it might be more worth it. The wait time can also be a pain for newer games.

Accessories are usually kind of a ripoff unless you get them from places like ebay or dx.com.

Mmkay, thanks, I'll check those then and do a bit of looking.

are you interested in a bunch of older 3ds games? i have alot (non-turds) i want to get rid of and i want to sell everything together

I am, there's a huge catalog now for the 3DS. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with a budget because I opted to get the n3DS early, so I won't be able to buy any games for a little bit :( I really appreciate the offer though!

Will QA for food.
For Toronto there's a bunch. They all have their pros and cons. They also tend to be easy to get to by public transit. Just be prepared for some googling though in case:

Game Centre - Yonge & Bloor and St Clair & Dufferin

Iceman Games - Kensington Market and Queen St & Bathurst

Hi Tech Games - Bloor & Dufferin

A&C Games - Spadina & College

Gameshack - Bay & Dundas (it's inside the 'Bay Atrium')

Personally I really dig Game Centre, Gameshack and Iceman Games. Game Centre and Gameshack tend to have good prices on most things. I got Drive Club from Game Centre for $29.99... And then sold it to Iceman. I generally go to Iceman to buy new games since they sometimes sell new games at 59.99. They also have great trade in values. A lot of their retro stuff seems really pricey though.

A&C and Hi Tech both have fantastic selections. A&C is quite pricey though. Hi Tech looks like it used to be a convenience store, and has a really damn small store.

The one place I recommend that's further from downtown is VGP.ca's actual physical store at Wilson & Keele. I have a few friends in Europe that import their games from their. They recently had a good Boxing Day sale.

Also you might wanna consult the community city specific threads for Toronto, and I think there's one for Montreal and Vancouver as well.

Game Mania at Bloor & Keele is worth checking out too. They have a retro selection in line with Iceman Games. And they have a ton of plushies and other nicknack sort of merchandise.

I used to love that store. Now everything is overpriced and they dropped a console games I love to look for (DS games, PSP games, etc.)

It's a shame, we don't really have anything else than them or EBGames in Montreal. (or those crappy comptant.com pawn shops, lol)

This will be a bit of a stretch, but I'm looking for a Wii U Nintendo Gamecube adapter for a friend, but after having no luck on eBay, I'm trying to find one for a "reasonable" price. (Between $30-$70 dollars.)

Any suggestions?

For those upgrading to the New 3DS XL, will you trading it in to EB Games for $100 credit, or taking your chances selling it on Craigslist/eBay? Does EB allow you to do a system transfer in store when upgrading?

Has the n3DS Monster Hunter bundle been posted anywhere besides EB?

Pretty much. People gave Sony a lot of flak for jacking up the PS4 price, but $449 CAD is actually only $375 USD, I wouldn't be shocked if it goes to $499 later this year if the dollar keeps falling.

$230 for the new 3DS is a pretty good deal, I paid $199 for my XL a while back when the dollar was much stronger.

I swear I will riot if Sony raises the price on it again. I really want one but have been waiting for a better bundle with games I actually want or the price to go back down.

It's pretty stupid that when it finally does get a price drop it's likely to go back to the price it started at in Canada which is hardly a deal in my book.

I'm glad I'm not jumping into n3DS XL pool. I'm pissed off with Nintendo for giving choice by not giving one at all. If they release regular size, they will get my money.
I hate them right now. Amiibo fiasco, Zelda bundle problems, delays, lack of choice, wtf is wrong with them?

With the Canuck buck now tanking down to the 83-cent US mark and continuing to drop, I'm expecting further console price increases and $75 games at launch in the not-too-distant future.

I did some research on finding a GameCube Adapter here in Canada, and while this method is very sound, I'm worried about the notes about the item is removed from Best Buy's CW.

Link.

If anyone wants to get a charger for even cheaper, you could do what I do for my secondary charger.

I bought something like this from ebay for $0.99 and I just use the AC adapter I have from my phone or that I got for my tablet and keep that in my bag. You can also find AC Adapters that plug into a USB for relatively cheap as well.

I carry this wire with me in my bag to charge my 3DS (in case it dies) at work.

By that time $59.99 for a 3ds game be the trend. $69.99 if its Atlus woo.

$75? I'm getting ready for $80.

The horror is not the bumped price, the horror is that the price tag will stay the same when CAD recovers, but I don't think that's the case for anytime soon.

Seriously if this trend keeps up the CAD might plummet under 80 cents US.

Edit: Are there any cases where retailers actually adjusted the prices of existing merch down due to a strengthening CAD? I'm not good with economics at all. So I'm just panicking here.

I only started buying games back when CAD and USD are almost at parity, where we also had the $60 MSRP

I kind of wish the Majora's Mask one had that same brush metal look, but in gold.

I actually prefer the Monster Hunter version. I would have jumped on something like that if it didn't have the logo.

I think there is a point we will reach when they will have to keep the price as is, despite the dollar. $74.99 might mean a loss of a lot of business.

Also, avoid Gamerama at Yonge and Eglinton. They have a weak selection, a messy store and I have encountered poor customer service there on more than one occasion. The new day manager seems better but I haven't seen a turn around in the quality of the store as a result.

Game Mania at Bloor and Keele is really good. I need to give them more of my business. Great retro selection.

Target is pulling out of Canada already. Bring on the liquidation.
Wow that was quick!

Not sad to see them go, but I'd like something to fill those mall spots. Is Kmart going to try next?
Like they were in Canada before?

Target's failure is that they sit at where Walmart sits at. Walmart in the US is seen as the shittier, trashier store, and Target survived as being the cleaner, more well managed places. Unfortunately for them, Walmart Canada isn't as trashy, and that stigma just isn't there. People won't switch over to "a better store" because to most, it's the same (if not pricier)
