Canadian Gaming Deals and Discussion Thread 5: Much Ado Aboot Shipping

The company says that to ensure fair treatment of its employees, nearly all its workers not needed during the wind-down period will receive a minimum of 16 weeks of compensation, including wages and benefits coverage.

This should help! Or it is not as good as it reads?

If anyone hears what is happening with Target Master Card owners let me know... Was going to save Red Card points or whatever until I could afford a TV for cheap... RIP to that idea.

RIP Canadian Target. You guys were so good to me. Sure you probably lost money every time I went in the door, but I was quick to sing your praises.

The Target I went to most always was well stocked, and was only really embarrassingly empty after the holidays. I should have taken that as a sign.

Best of luck to anyone soon to be out of work. Those guys in Minneapolis are idiots who seem addicted to bad management. I can't believe their stock shot up after the announcement.

My condolences. Hopefully severance pay, if that pans out, will help us all out smoothly enough until things get better.

Thanks, sir, but I haven't actually worked in several years. I worked on a line during college, two nights per week.

After college, I couldn't find work, and depression hit hard. My OCD came back strong, and anxiety as well. I've been helping family members and am going to apply for disability because I definitely qualify.

I tried an employment readiness course paid for by the gov't, and aced all the school work. It was like an easy grade 8 Civics course. I helped everyone else out if they were struggling, because a lot of the folks had financial issues, were on welfare, had learning disabilities, weren't good at school, etc. But when it switched to placement, my depression piqued. It made me wish I was dead while working at a newspaper doing cold calls.

I write from home, but it's just a hobby.

Damn, a gross assumption on my part. I'm afraid I can only partly relate, still grappling with depression myself, but that don't lessen my sympathy for ya.

I worked at a Family Video that was closed down, and I can relate. The morale when you find out your job is going to disappear is pretty much "fuck this".

Awww....I was relatively happy with part-time position as backroom & electronics at Target while continuing university. While this is relatively saddening news, it was inevitable. Even during the months of November & December, some District Managers and even some higher up people would come by doing multiple walks to assess our store.

wow there's a lot of unemployed peeps here.

i am on contract ending on end of april and i can't even shop for myself. i haven't shopped in a year. last time i dropped money on shopping i spent like $700 on things like shoes, winter jackets, pants, etc.

since then i haven't dropped serious cash. heck, i haven't even bought anything at all. no new shoes, no new shirts, nothing.

Not a problem. I appreciate it, and hope your depression goes away.

In reply to EmptySpace: I don't spend any money unless I absolutely have to. But my only bill is car insurance for a shared vehicle. Spending anything bugs me, because I worry so much about when my next income will come.

Well, they already purchased them at this point. If they sell them at regular price they won't generate anymore income for liquidation. If they drop the price by $5 they will sell by the tons and generate more revenue allowing Target to at least recoup on more of the cost of the initial purchase of the cards.

I don't know what they will get for sending them back to the vendor. That may be the better option.

Does it actually cost money to the retailer to stock up on prepaid cards? I think the supplier just gives them away for little to no cost, and then makes money only from actual sales when the cards are activated.

Maybe they'll pay a penalty for throwing some of them away but it's probably an insignificant amount.

well i got student loans and monthly phone bill. so far that's the only thing i spend money on.

although i just dropped serious money paying off part of my loan recently. so yeah...it's all about self-control, i guess. so many times i've looked at ps4s on kijiji. even one where it's selling for $350 or even less and i still passed on it.

Wow that was quick!

Like they were in Canada before?

Target's failure is that they sit at where Walmart sits at. Walmart in the US is seen as the shittier, trashier store, and Target survived as being the cleaner, more well managed places. Unfortunately for them, Walmart Canada isn't as trashy, and that stigma just isn't there. People won't switch over to "a better store" because to most, it's the same (if not pricier)

Where are these mythical stores? I can't stand shopping at Walmart and preferred Target in Canada for this reason. I'm sad to see them go.

I guess the corporate employees are probably getting laid off too? I pass by it every day on my way to work, it's a massive place. Hope everyone lands on their feet.

Target worker here. Not surprised but got to meet some cool ass people and got good hours from my ETL in my backroom shifts so I enjoyed my days there

Y'all cool

Go to a US store, you will see why the comparison exists.

We joke about People of Walmart, but the worst of Walmart here doesn't even come close to the shit that happens in the US,

On the bright side, 16 weeks pay plus Employment Insurance (4 months - almost a year depending on length of employment). You can find out how much EI you'll have coming your way here:

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/types/regular.shtml#eligible

3/4 of the way down the page there's a big chart that tells you how many weeks you'll get based on how many hours you worked.

Edit: speaking for myself, the Target's in Canada just couldn't compare to the States. 10 bucks in the US would get you a 5 pack undershirt with a BONUS 5 undershirts.

In Canada you'd get a 5 pack for 15 dollars. And no bonus.

The reality is that Wal Mart in Canada just offers better value for the money and doesn't have the same stigma as US Wal Mart's.

RIP Target. They never established a foothold here. I think it was a combination of bad locations, lack of stock, inability to match their US prices, the intense competition here, and the lack of an online store. Plus it's not like they're doing that well in the US either (that data breach definitely didn't help).

The ones I did go to were clean but quiet. Never scored many clearance deals from them, though I did get some $0 games when they had that $5 receipt coupon.

I'll miss the random price errors and crazy clearance the most. GTA 5 on 360 has been $30 at my location since August or so.

Most of all I'll miss my coworkers. Met some really cool people here.

Teksavvy just sent out apology emails about billing changes. But in our case, it says we're keeping the exact same speed (30/5) and price ($55), but getting a 100gb bandwidth cap boost (300 to 400gb).

Lol. What?

Seems like an auto generated email, but we happen to have chosen the speed/cap configuration that isn't losing anything and only gaining.

They said I was crazy for getting a Rosalina from Amazon Germany.
No wait, *I* said I was crazy for getting a Rosalina from Amazon Germany.

But in any case, WHO'S CRAZY NOW?

I gave Target a fair shake, went to the Stockyards and Vic Park locations a few times - nothing to make them really stand out, except for those occasional discounted Sony/Nintendo fun bucks cards.

They were even going to open up one near the ACC. Wonder what's going to happen to that space now.

If it makes you happy I think most people will think you are crazy for importing a kids toy from Germany.

Maybe it's a deal or a mistake but I got Tales of Hearts R for 35$ at ebgames.

About Target I guess it was expected. It's too bad for the employees though. They've closed so fast. Most of the aisles were always empty when I went there, seems like they had 1-2 of each item. Didn't help that over here often you would get stuck with employees that couldn't speak french at all, in QC.

I kinda expect us to still get Rosalina. That deal's been in place for a long time and unless Nintendo can make it non-exclusive and throw it up everywhere, it's probably still coming in February.

I got that too. I expected bad news considering the tone of the email, but realised I was getting the extra 100GB of bandwidth at no extra cost.

I got the extra bandwidth, but they're actually raising my bill a bit (from $49 to $53). I'm on the 28/1 cable plan.

I haven't got an email yet and while I've never come close to hitting my 300gb cap yet, I'll take another 100.

I've been to several as I live very close to the border, even been to two in South Carolina. Walmart in southern Ontario is almost identical. You just need to live in a larger city I suppose. Hamilton, Brantford and even Belleville have very similar clientele to the things you'd see on people of Walmart

My 18mbps plan went from 41.95 w/300gb cap to $44.95 same speed 400 GB cap. Same its the crtc/rogers fault explanation they always give.

Target is pulling out of Canada already. Bring on the liquidation.

How the fuck am I suppose to get my damn Rosalina now? Wait. When is this going to happen? Also, my heart goes out to my fellow Canuck GAF that will be unemployed. It sucks being without stable income especially in Ontario's job market. Hope you guys land on your feet soon.

The one on St. James that JUST finished building and took place of the entire block the Stadium use to sit on? Yeah. What the HECK are they going to do with that building now?

Not me, it went from 45 to 50$. Looks like they're throwing an extra 100gig to soften the blow but the unlimited downloads after 2am makes this useless to me honestly...

$5 increase for me on 25/10 DSL, but our bandwidth cap is going up to 400gb from 300gb. We rarely hit 250gb. Oh well. :/

I am on a 60/10 Unlimited connection.
No email for me.

My plan is fairly new. I had to change my grandfathered plan when I moved to my new apartment.

Sony is closing all their Canadian stores, too? Everyone's leaving. Soon we'll have nothing left.

I got my ps3 there, they are the only store that had stock left because no one look in there.

But the pricings are their stuff is laughable. They are still selling the Vita memory cards pre price cuts. Meaning $60 for 16GB and $100 for 32

Wait, is that unlimited after 2am thing for everyone? I didnt know and could find it really useful., when does it end, from 2am until what?

Anyways, got the email too, im on 60/10 for $69.95, didnt get a price increase but still got 100GB increase from 300GB to 400GB, Teksavvy rules :)
