Broforce skipping XBO due to Parity Clause, and "deal they couldn't refuse" w/ Sony

Guess Phil didn't want to make an exception in this case like he has for others :/

If it was Microsoft who offered them "a deal they couldn't reasonably refuse", what's the probability that the thread title would contain the word "moneyhat" instead and that the conversation would be focused on that?

Why? Would Greenwood have said "moneyhat" instead of what he actually said if he had a deal with MS?

Am I the only one who thinks that having "exceptions" is more fucked up then when the parity clause is enforced for everybody equally. At least when it's enforced for everybody it's fair game for all. I mean you know what happens if you don't release it on the XBO at the same time. But now some can get exceptions, but based on what? The whole situation is just iffy imo.

Which is why it should be uniformly dropped if they just grant exceptions anyway. It's a harmful policy for any number of reasons.

Here we go again

Here we 'bro' again

(It's actually because Brohei Broshida didn't want to star in an xbone game alongside Major 'Look' Nelson).

35%? I don't know.

Anyway, parallel universe thread whining can probably get you in trouble over on anti-Gaf.

Business is made of negociations. I don't see anything wrong with people getting around a table and discussing the conditions of a contract, that's... well, business as usual. Manufacturers, publishers, developers will get different deals depending on their respective situations.

The parity clause is Microsoft loss. As long as MS sells consoles in the U.S according to their projections (current ones that is) they won't care.

It's up to Sony to leverage indies more in the marketing sphere for it to really hurt MS sales wise. Otherwise it's all moral posturing and MS could care less.

Parity Clause = Stupid and clearly has gotten into the heads of developers.

But this quote/article sounds like they struck a great deal with Sony and did not even consider/try to publish on Xbox afterwards. The quote:

“As far as I know Microsoft has a clause in their contract where they won’t accept an indie game if it launches on Xbox after Playstation.”

Just seems to indicate they didn't pursue it. Glad they got a good deal though! Extra $ or promotion will always help.

I can already see the 180 in the horizon.

I dunno, this is hardly the first time a dev has skipped Xbox because of the clause. Most are quiet, but it's impossible to ignore that far more indie games are coming to PS One than Xbox One and, in my subjective opinion, more of the big ones as well (Transistor and Shovel Knight probably being the biggest losses if they're not given exceptions)

Sounds like it's a free PS+ game.

It's certainly possible--lots of pub fund games have ended up on PS+, though not always at launch. It's also probably not a pub fund game but some other specific deal, since it's already on Steam. But Sony also just seems to reach out to devs a lot. I'm not sure if there's an easy to find list of all the games with assorted Sony deals, it feels like a lot.

A lot of indies will probably do this, though. Indies aren't as organized and a payday today can matter a lot more than a larger payday a year from now. One of the biggest problems with the parity clause is it's common for indies to release on platforms in order of size and/or ease of porting rather than all at once, because devs can't afford to wait like huge publishers. I found this case a bit interesting as they DO have a publisher, though Devolver still isn't in the league of EA/etc.

I know it's annoying getting games later than on PS4, but bloody hell, I'd rather have them late than never. Fuck this clause.

[EDIT] Oh wait, it's not because of the clause? Well, it still needs to be removed. But also fuck these indie devs. They always say they want to bring their games to as much people as possible, but still make exclusive deals like this. Fuck that.

Well except that there have been multiple instances in which the parity clause has been abandoned in favor of bringing a game to the Xbox One. Seems like this dev didn't even negotiate with MS.

They shouldn't have to negotiate though. The clause simply shouldn't be there to begin with.

This. Not newsworthy unless they actually tried to get it on Xbox. This article is clickbait

It is more like "I could not come to the party because I crashed my car. Also, even if I tried, maybe I would have found heavy traffic".

More than likely putting pressure on Microsoft for a future release. I'd say this a pub fund or Contrast style release. Will more than likely come to XB1 eventually but putting this out there will put pressure on MS to come and talk about the parity clause.

I thought the parity clause was only for the ID@Xbox program? Couldn't they find a different publisher and still launch on XB1?

I always figured the ideal release plan for any game is simultaneous release. Why is this such an issue now? I would think ideally you would want to wait until your game is ready to launch on as many platforms as possible especially for marketing purposes.

There's already been pressure. Phil gave some lip service answer. And here we are months later still hearing about the toxic parity clause.

What I gained out of it:

They have a deal with Sony, a deal so good they couldn't refuse it.

Even if they did try to put in on Xbone, they would be stopped due to the parity clause.

Sony made a offer they couldn't refuse.

Parity clause

Microsoft has some clause that says they won't take indies if it comes to Playstation first, that he knows of.

Reading threw the first page has me thinking a few posters just read the title and not the OP.

Not feasible for a lot of smaller developers. Either they lack the manpower or the funds to develop them all at the same time.

It makes no sense, for me anyways, to hold back completed versions of the game and not make money while I'm developing the game on another platform. Not to mention all the headaches in having to fix bugs on several platforms all at once.

NOT getting games on my xbone makes me feel like a first class citizen

And they shouldn't reach out and try to get an exception either. The whole stupid clause should be removed

I mean more pressure to get talks with Devolver, not the parity clause as a whole. Once Devolver and MS start talks the game will come to XB1.

Also as some are mentioning, it shouldn't matter whether they pursued or not. That would just mean MS making exceptions and that's not good enough. It needs to go full stop.

Its for all games, including retail and games published by big publishers [but individual deals for exceptions can be made, usually for very successful titles/studios].

I'm not saying they didn't try to get it on Xbox or something like that. I just assumed Indie studios know stuff like MS's parity clause in and out. Shouldn't MS make sure they know all the pros and cons of their clause?

It sounds like the devs were resigned to not deal with MS because of the parity clause. When indie developers won't even come to your table because one party finds your business practices that toxic, that's a big problem.

MS need to wake the fuck up! They're in no position to reasonably expect devs to adhere to this. Major backfire.

"As far as I know"?
Shouldn't they know everyhting about it?

Everything is NDA'd. You have to be an ID@Xbox dev to get some answers.

It puzzles me that the guys at Xbox could clear up a LOT of things simply by outlining a lot of stuff but can't due to the heads up preventing just that.

Long story short, it's a great indie dev initiative at MS being strangled by tons of red tape, and Phil Spencer doesn't give a shit. Frustrating as hell.

Parallel universe thread whining? What the hell? I'm just pointing out that, by Greenwood's own admission, the game is not coming to Xbox One primarily because they have a deal with Sony. The parity clause was practically only mentioned in passing.

I agree. In this case it seems more than the Parity clause is in play though. There's a couple of different factors.

If that Microsoft clause is true (shit if I know) than would the parity clause matter?

Thats how I understand it unless I'm missing something.

Well I don't like the parity clause the wording here makes it sound like the reason this game isn't on XBO is because of it.

It sounds more like Sony is paying them for a exclusivity then anything else.
