Just bought the game used for 30$, I hope its worth it !

What is the difference between hard and normal mode? I'm tempted to play it on hard, is that a good idea? I love big challenges...

I've only completed through Chapter 10 so far, but man did I miss the boat on this when I picked Evil Within over this as my Halloween game of choice last October. Despite its frustrating nature at times and its tendency to drag in spots it's still the best Alien game I've ever played, capturing the atmosphere and feel of the movies perfectly.

I've only played a bit of The Evil Within, but I didn't like it all that much. It's something that's sitting there in my backlog, needing to be finished, but I'm procrastinating.

This was more interesting and more fun.

I think last night was the first time I made any significant progress without getting stuck. It's been hard for me to get into the game. Maybe it's just starting to click for me.

One thing I have to mention is how bad I feel the encounters with humans are. There just doesn't seem to any kind of method to them

Why do I hear the Motion Tracker sound sometimes when I'm not even using it? At first I thought it was my imagination, but it happens throughout the game. That can't be a coincidence. Anyone know?

Its hinting that the xenomorph has started to move closer and you should check it.

I'm not a horror type of guy. Dead Space 1 and 2 where to scary even though I own both, but I always loved Alien.

How is the story in Isolation? Is it good?

Picked this up for cheapo the other day.

Really enjoying it except one thing, the synthetics.

Is there no way to kill them without wasting all my ammo? Playing on hard and using noise makers etc when i can but it's annoying when theres 3 after me and i can only hide. Or am i playing the game wrong

You are becoming hysterical.
A couple of hits from your wrench will kill them, but they tend to grab you before you can finish them off. I don't know if you found a stun rod yet but I mostly stunned them with that and then clubbed them like a baby seal.

Stun rod or emp mines. Whack 'em to death while they are stunned.

Spoiler for later in the game:
This method will not work on a new type of Working Joe.

Reposting my immediate post-game thoughts from that other thread.

Finally finished it after buying it on launch day.

I think the middle does drag a bit, but it picks up again toward the end.

I have a feeling this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but if they make a sequel (and I hope that they do), I hope that the Alien AI is more predictable. I don't mean that I hope it has set patrol routes or anything. That whole aspect of the Alien AI is fantastic. What I mean is that at the moment the Alien kind of feels like it teleports around. You'll leave it behind down one corridor, and three seconds later it'll be in front of you. This just kind of feels cheap when it happens.

I think that using a tool should be a major commitment that nets you relatively major rewards. Using a noisemaker shouldn't only mean distracting the Alien for the 10 seconds it takes you to get through the next door, only for it to suddenly appear in front of you four seconds after that. Yes, the Alien can navigate through ducts, but even then it occasionally breaks my sense of spatial and temporal continuity, and that just takes me out of the game, instead of immersing me further.

Obviously it's a balancing act, and for the most part I think it's one of that Creative Assembly pull off very well; the Alien can't have truly random behaviour, because they run the risk of it just farting around in corners of the map that the player never explores.

It's like Aliens 2 but with the mood and setting of Alien 1. (No guns blazing, not an action movie)

From Chapters 1-13 the game has a 100% Alien feel, but from Chapter 14 to the end it starts to incorporate more of Aliens. When I say Aliens I want to make it clear that I am referring to the movie and not the other alien universe games that take their cues from Aliens.

I'd argue that the whole "escape" feel from Chapter 14 onwards feels more like it came out of Aliens than Alien.

Nevertheless, its an "Alien" game.

Maybe, but to me that end section evoked the tension of the escape in Alien than it did the one in Aliens. Although I see where you're coming from with the exploding ship and all.

Some will say otherwise, but the game very clearly draws some things from Aliens, but they wisely keep the base experience to feel like Alien.

The first 13 chapters are more or less strictly Alien influenced, but final chapters start to incorporate a bit of Aliens into them, but never going away from keeping Alien as the base.

Nevertheless here is where AI takes it cues/influenced from Aliens.
I. The character of Amanda Ripley was introduced in Aliens.
II. Samuels is more like Bishop as opposed to Ash, although it could just be a coincidence.
III. The alien lifecycle seems to follow Aliens instead of Alien. Here is why I think that.

The alien morphing introduced in Alien is unlikely for several reasons:
1. It was and still is considered a deleted scene. It's existence did not become widely known until 1999 when the Alien 20th Anniversary DVD was released. This was 13 years after the life cycle introduced in Aliens and had become canon at that point. Yes, the scene was reincorporated into the Directors Cut, but Ridley Scott has stated many times that the theatrical cut which does not have that scene is the preferred version, despite the fact that the newer cut is labelled (marketting purposes) as a Directors Cut. It is in fact NOT that. This info comes straight from Ridleys mouth on the Alien Quadrilogy and Alien Anthology.

2. The morphing in Alien is far too ambiguous. In the film are Bret and Dallas being converted into other eggs to make more facehuggers or being morphed into other drones? It's not remotely clear. There are tons of plausible fan theories that allow morphing and ant lifecycle to co-exist. For example, morphing is plausible for when there is only one drone and a limited number of hosts, otherwise the drone will grow into a queen. Tons of ways to make them both work.

Spoiler time:
3.
I'm of the belief that in the reactor section, there is an unseen queen that laid the eggs. The shrieks you hear are very similar to the queen from Aliens and the fact that there is no evidence of morphing taking place, but you do see several dead humans that had aliens burst from their chest, which supports the bug lifecycle.

4.
after the reactor blows the station seems to be falling apart and that more closely mirrors aliens than alien, but both films involve an escape at the end and an argument can be made that it's taking parts of both. The very last sequence that takes place inside Sevastapol very much mirrors Ripley going into the hive and getting Newt in that involved navigating through eggs, and obstacles, a section that I have long maintained was unnecessary. Once you get the spacesuit on it goes back to Alien where the final spacewalk takes place.

Well it turns out that I was correct since it was confirmed in an interview,
CA wanted to keep the queen hidden since they felt if they showed her to the player, the player would be expected to fight her.

http://www.avpgalaxy.net/website/interviews/interview-creative-assembly-post-launch/

Excerpt:
AvPGalaxy – The inclusion of the Alien hive was a surprise to quite a lot of us! However, in the narrative it wasn’t explained how the hive or multiple Aliens came to be. Was it ever discussed within the team how the hive came about? Queen? Eggmorphing?

Gary Napper – We wanted to imply that a Queen was on board but it didn’t feel like facing off against a boss Alien Queen was very… “Alien”. We were caught in a riddle of, “If we show an Alien Queen, the player will expect to fight her” and “If we don’t show her, people will ask where the eggs come from”. In the end we figured it was best to preserve the suspense and mystery by not explicitly showing her.

About to start the game for the first time. Is the achievement for beating the game on the hardest difficulty for Hard or Nightmare? Nightmare wasn't in the game at launch correct?

So I just had an awesome time partway into mission 12 but since I'm on PC I don't have a "share" button, so I took to Youtube to find a good playthrough of the part so I could show it to someone.
I feel like everyone plays this game like shit. I must have watched 10 different videos and everyone seems like theyre rushing around, hardly paying attention, giving no time to taking in the scenery. In danger sure, but there are plenty of moments people are just blatantly missing even when time allows.
The game has beautiful moments and environments and is often very cinematic if you let it be.

I first noticed this bullshit when watching playthroughs of early on, the first encounter with the roaming alien.
When it slithered out of that vent, I hid but I still kept a very clear view of it. The music rose as the alien slowly rose, clothed in smoke.
It was a wonderful moment that I loved so much I took to youtube to watch it again. Most people apparently just turn and run at that moment and never even see it.

The part I'm talking about right now though is Mission 12 in the
Android Showroom.

When I came into the room, as I crept around the corner I saw a couple androids but as I entered further
I saw the whole shitload of them. I paused there a moment to see that none of them were moving, so I timidly walked over to each of them and gave them a quick inspection. Relieved that they were deactivated I did my thing and hit the button. Music starts playing. Of course that one android then starts walking toward me so I shotgun him to the head. As I pause there thinking I am safe, the whole lot of them start moving and I have to bolt inbetween them to get through the door. I turn around to look to see all of them rushing me and I think I'm fucked, but the door slams shut on them. After poking around I totally accidentally open the door, but there is a huge vent fire in front of it. I stand in front of it chuckling at their bad fortune, not realizing how unsafe I really am, when I see one start to walk through, then another and another. I've got like six FLAMING androids on my tail and I am NOT prepared. The image was awesome and the ensuing fight was epic.

But how do people on youtube play it?
Walk into the room, hardly notice the androids, hit the button, bolt through the door before they can even see the androids moving, slam the door shut without even turning to look.

The game even skips the music cue for them sometimes. It knows theyre not paying attention to shit. So much awesomeness totally wasted and the more A:I videos I watch the more I see of people playing the entire game like this. It's like they're on a fucking time limit. Even the damn
space jockey
hardly gets a second glance. Creative Assemblies great work going to waste.

If time/situation allows, stop and smell the roses guys. It makes the experience so much better.

I've read that the beginning of Chapter 16 can be used as a kind of informal free roam session to backtrack through Sevastopol and pick up any missed collectibles. Does it matter if I do it during my first story run or can I go back afterwards with chapter select and have it still count?

this game is way to creepy. is it randomized where the alien appear?

I dont know how I can balls-up and play this. holy fuck. its way to realistic looking. goddamn.

I completed the game then loaded up chapter 16 from chapter select to get stuff I missed. Trophies unlocked fine.

The only thing that sucks is that you still have to avoid the alien. It would be nice that after you beat the game you are given the opportunity to turn the alien off.

Yeah I wouldn't have minded that.

You can probably take the piss against him on novice mode if you wanna explore.

I actually had some of my most memorable encounters with the alien when free roaming in chapter 16.

I also came across random npcs which was cool as I thought at this stage I'd find few. One was non-hostile and I felt pretty bad when the alien got him.

The alien can still kill you even in novice. The rules don't change.

Gaf, I just returned to
maimed glasses lady and English Chap with a healthpack
and to be honest, my interest/will to go on is waning.

I think I know the answer already, but does the game do anything drastic to change things up? I mean, I have all these gadgets - molotovs, EMPs, gas bombs, etc - and NOTHING to do with them; unless I'm meant to be stockpiling them for later, which ain't the best game design, if so. If any game could benefit from a 'Ubisoft mechanic-on-a-string' implementation, it's this one.

Ol' Xenomorph has lost a lot of his scare factor, also.

I've reached the first proper alien encounter in the medical wing, the part where you're supposed to retrive Kuhlman's keycard, and I'm not sure what to think. I've really liked the game up until this point, and want to continue doing so, but I can't seem to get a handle on the stealth. It feels like the alien orbits you too closely. I hide and wait for the alien to go somwhere else, but as soon as I leave the hiding place it comes back and I have to go into hiding again. The tiny window of oppurtunity for moving around combined with little to no room for error is making it really tedious. Or maybe I just suck at the game, I don't know.

I had the same issues. It took me awhile to gauge the alien. For a long time I thought you had to crouch walk whenever the alien was on the map. I starter to progress more consistently when I picked up the pace and completed objectives quicker. All I Can say is try and stick with it until the alien becomes more predicable to you

I just encountered that area last night as well. There was a lot of unpredictably with the alien and I hid for a long, long time. I found it terrifying to be honest. That being said, I don't know if that unpredictability is intentional with the AI or not. It's certainly not like MGS where you can memorize a guards patrol pattern.

So I'm stuck on Ch17. Its near the end, the part where you pull the switch and then have to go all the way back to the generator to re power the switch. The Alien is sooo agressive at this point. I have like 36 flamethrower fuel and like no moltoves or anything. Does anybody have a suggestion?

It goes up to the vent but pretty much drops right down again.

That part drove me crazy. In the end I just went where I needed to go, and didn't stop unless the alien was right in front of me. Power through!

It's literally the hardest part of the game because you're brand new to the Alien's behaviour. It only gets easier from there because you figure out certain things you can cheat with and get away scott free.

At first it felt tedious to me too at that part and that's because I still sucked at the game and had no experience with the alien. As time went on I got better and the game felt better. It's just a bit of a shock at first.

So I've been working on finally finishing up this game and I feel like I am finally getting close as I wind my way towards the *MAJOR SPOILER*
original spaceship that brought you there, is working at docking with a rapidly falling Sevestopol while dodging aliens.

I also got a friend to buy Alien Isolation for his xbone after he had me rave about it for an hour or so while I played Sunset Overdrive. He is playing through it right now and loves it as much as I do.

I mean really the attention to detail here is astounding, and I want them to make more survival horror games, like say a John Carpenter's The Thing game.

Yes, the best thing to do is say "fuck it" and just go. Seriously. Thats one of the worst parts of the game IMO.

Damn.. Its gonna be hard just cause of how narrow that hallway is and having to take the round about. And it really sucks cause I'm so close to the end of the chapter and I'm pretty sure the AI is just toying with me lol.

As long as you're reasonably cautious your best bet is to just crouch (maybe walk) down the hallway and just hope the alien doesn't come around. You will get through eventually. But trying to plan out a strategy for that part is pointless.
