Destiny |OT15| What Cheese May Come

How is it a solution when a significant portion of the playerbase doesn't have one and is only further marginalized by not having it?
I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I meant designing encounters around the idea that most people will have one is the only way it'll be sold again.

It's a more elegant solution than a straight up nerf in any case if they want to avoid the backlash. That's what I meant originally :)

From losing heavy ammo, less dmg output, more dmg received, no health regen, to needing a lot more dps output, to "anti cheese" gatekeeper, weird lag, more bullet sponges..
Losing heavy ammo - I hate it, but I can deal. Apparently some hard coded mechanic makes saving a value really hard.
Knights coming through the barrier - I hate it, but I still hate it. However, with snipers and FRs sometimes you can stagger them.

That Gatekeeper... That thing really gets under my skin. It should be possible to kill it and catch at least a 30 second breather down there. Killing it costs you DPS you could be doing to Crota! Admittedly the Gatekeeper hit me once and got me killed, but I dislike the extremely limited incentive to actually kill the bugger.

Of course the incentive to kill the Gatekeeper is that it drops Crux of Crota or something stupid like that.

A Shrieker spawn down there is so much more interesting. Then you can send a teammate in to clear it and outrun the blast shards before the team moves down. If your team is down there for too long then spawn some Wizards and Vestiges. How about only opening the door when Crota is nearby? Or Killing the Gatekeeper opens the door for 1 minute! There are lots of interesting options down there.

Probably need some sleep. Going to take an early day tomorrow, but for grilling and beers. Not for Destiny :]

I can only imagine you are saying this because you do not own said GodtierHorn.

My own brother once told me this; "The Truth Rocket is just as good as the Gallarhorn, so I won't be picking it up from Xur."

I later let him play on my character, and he has been kicking himself ever since.

Never said other rockets are "just as good".

Gjallarhorn is wanted for a reason.

5 people shooting Hunger of Crota can make up for a gjallarhorn or two.

meh this Crota HM stuff is typical MMO dev cycle. Developers get upset that everyone thinks their content is too easy or stupid, so they cackle and release an update with extremely difficult/unfair content. Then after a few weeks they act magnanimous and say they are nerfing the content to make it more appealing to the wider playerbase, and everyone is happy for their generosity.

I'm guessing we'll see HM mobs drop from 33 to 32 in a few weeks.

On a positive note I've been messing around with Abyss Defiant and it's a really good gun. Focused Fire makes it into a baby Suros.

Either that or nerf wolfpack rounds.

I don't think this is too good either, it'll just stifle class customization if the Horn is borderline required for end game content.

As it currently stands though, Xur should sell it sometime soon because this CE HM seems to favor its usage far too much and not enough people have it.

Help me organize/plan my gear to push myself as close to lvl 30 as possible.

I'm "almost" lvl 28. Haven't done a raid yet.

I've been reading through Hawkian's guides in the OP but I'm not quite sure where to go next.

- What should I buy (from Xur)?
- What should I wait until it drops from VoG (or should I at all?)
- and what should I buy from Ikoa Rey & then upgrade (or upgrade something that I already have, see my gear)?

Hawk says in the OP:

"One route to 29 is this:
-1 Maxed Exotic
-1 Maxed raid piece
-1 Maxed regular Legendary
-1 regular legendary with its "regular" upgrades only (no ascendant shards)"

also:

"First, secure an Exotic helm. The raid Helm only drops from Hard mode VoG, so it is easier to hit 30 with that slot filled by an exotic. If you can reliably run the Hard mode, you only need to run that each week, and you'll get both sets of loot. This approach means you WILL spend every shard you get your hands on to grind your existing gear up to 29."

So I was thinking of buying an Exotic helm from Xur and upgrading it. Seems like a sure bet, right?
But what about the other gear? :/

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

That would be cool (maybe true), but a disappointing miss at an opportunity to have it become a temporary buff mechanic that would make the fight more interesting.

I would look for the exotic you want most and then upgrade that completely. Then best bet if you have a lot of Vanguard marks saved up is just buying the light lvl 33 gear your vanguard guy sells. I also believe the gauntlets you can get from the Dark Below mission also goes to 33. In which case you would just need a helm, chest and legs, one of which would be an exotic. With all of that you can reach lvl 31.

As a Warlock I highly highly highly highly recommend getting either Obsidian Mind or Apotheosis Veil if either are ever available. Obsidian Mind is really fun. Apotheosis Veil will be helpful all the way to end-game hard raid if you so desire. Otherwise save your coins for a fun weapon.

There are several people willing to solo certain sections of the raid and drag low level players along. Keep an eye out for those as it's a free way to get armor with a high light level. I might run through the pillar section tomorrow some time between 5-7 PM EST.

It really is. There were plenty of times during the 6 hours failed of world's first scrubs attempt at killing crota, that when everyone were low on gjallarhorn rockets, we had person X firing 2 rockets and person Y would fire 1 rocket. Since we were trying to converse rockets as much as we can, the time it takes for the second gjallarhorn rocket from person X to hit Crota, his shields would sometimes be regen already. It could be due to lag or whatever but we had to simultaneously fire 3 gjallarhorn rockets and put in a 4th gjallarhorn rocket to overkill it just to be safe. It pains me typing this, since it puts so much important role around 1 weapon...

Did you have anyone train their primary on him to keep the shield from regening during rocket spam?

Beat Crota on hard, got three of the four raid primaries (scout rifle, auto rifle, pulse rifle) the raid speeder which is the same as the VoG one except green and black...Even the flame trail is the same color (come on Bungie) and the Gloowoo shader.

by this you mean the gear which *goes* to light level 33 when fully upgraded? or light level starts at level 33?
Uhhhhh, I think it's B, but either way if you haven't done a raid it doesn't really matter, a full set of new vanguard gear will get you to 30 + an exotic = 31.

Even if you don't have the 2 commendations required to buy a full set it's almost assuredly faster to grind those factions, rather than waste weeks potentially waiting for a full set to drop in VOG which is notorious for being stingy.

VOG normal is mostly dead now anyway to most so finding a group could suck. Better to buy the vanguard or crucible gear, hit 30 or 31 and then do VOG on hard mode which is still ran fairly frequently.

You'll get all the best guns and the real VOG experience without stressing about armor drops.

Just beat Crota on hard. Got the shader and the scout rifle. Here are my thoughts on hard mode.

First section is well balanced and still very fun. It still seems like there are cheese methods, but at least the first chest no longer gives exotics.

Bridge section is pretty tough, especially because of the Hallowed Knight that is also over there with the Gate Keeper. Still, good fun.

The Death Singer is a little too easy, but I'm not a fan of the encounter design so I'm ok with it.

Crota. Mutha F'in Crota. So, I really like that they made the encounter require a lot more teamwork and is overall complex, but they went too far in my opinion. Not being able to go down in the middle tunnel is fine (I expected it), but with no chalice there is little room for error. What really exacerbates the issue is how much health Knights have plus how skiddish the Sword Carrier is. But my main problem is Crota automaticalling going into Oversoul. It's just, well, overkill.

Even after saying all that, if I felt like the rewards - or potential rewards - were good enough it would justify the effort, but it's not. Unless Necrochasm is as good or better than the Vex pre-nerf, I just don't see it being worth it since we can't gain another level to make it more fair like we could in The Vault of Glass.

So Bungie needs to tweak the difficulty and please fix the bugs. Please.

Vault of Glass armor is obsolete so forget it for the moment. You should still try running Normal Vault of Glass (27 is enough to do it) for Ascendant Shards. You'll need them for upgrades.

Crota's End and Exotic armor pieces max out at 36 Light. Post-DLC Vendor armor (like your gauntlets and boots) maxes at 33 Light. Pre-DLC Vendor armor maxes at 27 Light (like your current Helm and Chest).

Your final setup will be 3 Crota's End pieces + an Exotic, all maxed at 36 Light so you can be level 32. But you can't run Crota's End yet so you need some stopgap armor for now.

Your current Helm and Chest are old Legendaries. Don't waste any resources upgrading those. First order of business is to replace either of them with an Exotic. Preferably a Helm since that's the rarest Raid drop.

Summary: upgrade your current gauntlets and boots to 33 Light. Replace your Helm or Chest with an Exotic. Completely ignore the one you didn't replace. That'll be enough to take you to level 29-30. After that you can start running Crota's End and build your Raid set.

Hope this made sense!

sounds outdated from before the DLC.

new route, any level:
-vanguard bounties to get rank 3, giving you 1 commendation
-vanguard marks, max 100 per week (a new playlist of random strikes give marks)
-in two weeks (or at least crossing one weekly reset on monday night) earn at least 150 marks
-crucible bounties to get rank 3, giving you 1 commendation
-crucible marks, max 100 per week (33-50 matches of pvp)
-in two weeks (or at least crossing one weekly reset on monday night) earn at least 150 marks
in one of the two types, earn 195 marks

buy armor + gloves/boots vanguard/crucible armor for 75x2 +1 commendation
buy helmet +gloves/boots vanguard/crucible armor for 120 + 72 + 1 commendation

do dailies to earn shards to level up the armor
since you're 28 you should do the raid since you can get many shards there.

this will earn you lvl 31. fromt here, crota's end will earn you armor and shards for level 32

more variations:
xur armor (36 light) (bought with coins earned from wekly heroic strike and random engrams)
urn quest (gloves with 33 light)

these can replace having to earn/spend vanguard marks and thus make you able to hit 31 without waiting for a weekly reset.

Yeah full gear that takes you to light 33, and an exotic piece with light 36 will get you to 31 without ever stepping into a raid. That said once you get to 30 you can start Crota on normal and get your raid gear. While doing all that learn the VOG for shards.

Hard mode is a big fuck you to the people who said the raids were too easy. We finished HM last night and the sense of achievement is extremely satisfying. That's one thing Destiny does well.
