Don't expect Dying Light reviews till release date or later

I feel like boycott is a strong word, but all this shady business with numerous pre-order DLC packs practically begging you to pre-order the game and keeping the game from the press definitely isn't making this fence sitter feel confident in the final game's quality.

I approve this message.

sure it's better to look at everything but the actual game materiel you can easily find to judge a game.

Sounds more like a time issue, probably related to the whole physical version delayed and other things as opposed to "the pubs are holding back review copies because the game is shit"

I don't know why several reviewers saying they haven't gotten they're review codes yet equates to "OMG they are refusing reviews because the game must suck!"

I remember reading that this game was going to have native VR support. Has anything come of that? I'm admittedly more interested in how well that works than reviews for the actual game's mechanics right now.

I believe there is support for it,

Here you go i literally typed in dying light playthrough and it shows the start of the game.
My question wasn't where to find it, my question was where it was from (videos released by Techland themselves? preview build sent to selected to Youtube influencers? sponsored preview event?) etc.

normally this would be a huge red flag and I would steer clear of it. After watching some of the campaign though, this looks like it could be a pretty fantastic game especially for cooperative mode lovers like me

What I've seen the Youtubers playing does look promising, but from my understanding what they're playing is essentially an extended demo, correct?

I may end up picking this game up post-launch if it turns out the full game is as strong as that preview(?) build would suggest, but for now I'm comfortable on my fence here.

I'm in it for this alone, VR that is implemented at the developer level is highly superior than using a 3rd party plugin like VorpX. I am absolutely excited to see how this looks in the Rift.

Here's an article from 2 days ago.

http://vrfocus.com/archives/10748/dying-light-dev-oculus-rift-support-brainer/

and Tech Crunch had a good feature on it last month.

no not coop. But if you want to play as a zombie in competitive MP, you need to pre order or pay after
Is it an invasion mode or competitive 4vs1? Both? All I've ever heard them say is that "Be the Zombie" allows you to invade. Yet in the recent Gamespot video where one of the developers demonstrate it, that's not what's happening at all.

The guy literally says "We're gonna play Be the Zombie. I'm gonna invade your game", and then it cuts to a 4vs1 multiplayer mode that's separate from the story mode, and he says: "To win this game you have to destroy five hives."
I'm confused. Does Warner Bros/Techland not know what an invasion mode is? Are they intentionally misleading people? Or did something break when they tried to invade, and they instead went to this competitive Be the Zombie mode that also exists but hasn't been talked about at all?

first to be fair. if there are production problems, especially physical production of the disks then this is cool.

If not...this is just an added bonus for pre-orders folks! The feeling you may have pissed 60 bucks out the window before the game even arrives!

Just kidding...I do hope for those who want to play this game its great but what a friggin year. This feeling of broken games as the new norm sucks.

There are hundreds of videos of the preview versions on Youtube, all of them with hours and hours of footage of the campaign.

I am pretty sure people can use that to paint themselves a picture of the game.

I've seen nearly all of them and have a good picture of the game.

But I would like to know how the full product is before making a purchase one day so yeah

It's a new year. Maybe there will be no broken games in 2015!

Release date embargo reviews don't raise a red flag for me since a lot of devs do that. Not giving reviewers the game until release date? Red flag.
Ditto. This is definitely something to remember outside of a few key publishers/developers who are known to be great but hold off anyway, while release date review embargos are more about the fairest way to ensure no one rushes out ahead. Though it's lame when release date embargos extend PAST the hour of availability.

i don't expect final product to be more than preview (we will have at minimun one other area , others enemies (pretty much cc dead island ones) all comp to unlock (we already seen the most visual/game changer (if we can really say so) ones) all shown in different trailer

I mean, we can't forget Dead Island's trailer, either. The IGN vid of it on YT has 14 million views alone.

That was a one-time thing and Dying Light doesn't have the same luxury.

Oh, absolutely! That trailer certainly played the biggest role in DI's success. But I think the next factor was how well it took off with Youtube users. They're hoping to net the same results with DL. I think this just shows the changing landscape as far as marketing goes. Reviewers aren't as important as they once were. Not when you can send the game early to popular Youtube users and have millions of potential customers see it.

For you.
I've been able to play the preview build(PC) for half an hour. Runs pretty darn well on a 970 and it's fun to play. I may not buy this one at launch but I won't give a shit about any reviews about the game.

Even if this isn't malicious, there must be some serious Q&A issues if they are unable to get the game to reviewers in a proper time frame. Def not something I'd risk my money on.

I don't agree with the opinion that holding back review copies equals a sign of bad quality. I don't feel reviewers are entitled so much that they deserve to play before anyone else. Is it worse off for the general public? Sure. This goes for any title really and not specifically this one.

I don't know, many of the people playing the preview build seemed to be rather pleased and have put in a lot of hours with it.

Plus, digital copies aren't impacted by the supply issues. There's nothing stopping Techland from sending out download codes.

Well it's possible that they haven't got the obligatory day 1 patch through/uploaded yet, so they might want people to review based on that....

It's obviously fine to be cautious, but i think many developers from the releases we've seen, don't want reviews going out early these days, I think that is the norm.

As for issues, I felt it was clunky when i played it at EGX last september. But I really enjoyed Dead Island and felt that it was a rough diamond. Reviewers on some sites were a bit harsh. I think as long as the game is better than Dead Island technically I will be happy bunny :)

I'm with you. I don't understand the wild accusations when there's no formal release day embargo and we have no other info.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Call me old fashioned, but I'm just not into watching Let's Plays instead of just reading a review.

The YT culture is so weird to me.

Yet, this isn't a good sign for the game... it hardly ever pans out that late review copies or day 1 embargoes aren't about trying to hide something.

Besides, Dead Island was fun the first couple hours as well.. but it fell apart rather quickly and was utter shit by the end. Which is pretty much why it reviewed the way it did... funny that?

I've seen this defense (along with "There was a beta," "We have so many positive youtubers," and others in the same vein) a lot the last few years.

You'd think people would stop using it for as often as it blows up in their faces.

I know they don't have an embargo but not gonna help much if the review copies aren't there in timely manner. I have watched so much youtube footage of this game that I already know I'll like it so I'm in. My gtx 970 & 4790k will rock this!

Not worried at all, I've seen more gameplay of this game in the last few days than any review would tell me. I'm good to go.

Maybe it works well for thoses using it directly and not jumping the hype through forum or comment of thoses poeples.

Remember Dead Island where the first area was great, and the rest of the game was total shit? So yeah, they might have a reason for holding back review copies. They could easily send codes if the physical releases are a problem.

Where are you seeing it's cutting to a new mode separate from the story?

It's an invasion, the hives spawn when the zombie invades and is how you repel it.

Yeah, I don't get it either. The same guys trashing game reviewers are hyping up youtubers playing a preview version of a game like it means something.

For those that cannot seem to understand.

A playthrough of a 'PREVIEW BUILD' (i.e. not the final build) works as a fantastic supplement to a full written review that is based off of the final build of a game.

If the final review of the finished code is missing, the value of the preview build playthroughs is diminished. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see a review of the final code of a game before buying it. Especially these days.

So stop being so confused about why this rubs some people the wrong way.

I always thought the game looked a bit ... shoddy, but if it was been 60fps I was willing to give it a chance anyway. Now I am saving money instead, every bit of news makes the decision seem better.

This and Evolve are the two current big train wrecks just waiting to happen.
