The Roguelike/lite Thread. A Serious Case of Deja-vu.

Definitely gonna pick up Ziggurat sometime this year, looks like a combination of Issac and Tower of Guns.

Yep, it really is. It's an arena shooter with RPG/Roguelike trappings. Made it onto my GOTY list for last year I enjoyed it so much. It's nowhere near as deep (or perhaps obtuse) as Isaac, but I liked it for that. As others have said, perfect podcast game.

Good to see it getting some love in here, as I think it was woefully overlooked last year.

Just started Risk of Rain yesterday. So far it's been brutally hard. I've never felt like I was making so little progress before.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is an amazing free, open source, dungeon crawling roguelike. Is really old-school, but also has ton of options and variations.

For anyone who has enjoyed roguelike inspired games, but hasn't played a traditional roguelike, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a great place to start. The game has a nice tutorial and is generally designed around balanced, fair gameplay.

I'd also like to mention the original Shiren the Wanderer for Super Famicom / DS. The game may seem overly simplified to long time roguelike players, but the game is smartly designed to give a limited set of tools and actions varied uses that reward thinking outside of the box. The game also has the benefit of SNES era RPG production values, so it looks and sounds great.

The DS version of this game made some changes to make it more approachable and fair, but long time roguelike players might not like these changes (you are now able to move back floors for the first half of the game, letting you gather items and restart your adventure with them, though this negatively affects your score). The original game for Super Famicom has a fan translation, so you can play that version if you want more of a challenge.

Nice thread. My favorite roguelike/lite I've played is Dungeons of Dredmor, though I haven't been able to get into many others.

Got to the last boss in Ziggurat, died. Didn't notice all the fire raining from above...

I'm liking it better than tower of guns myself. It's less of a bullet hell and more traditional doom FPS. Also Tower of Guns has that weird perspective thing where it felt like you were an ant from everything being huge. Didn't affect the gameplay but always made my brain kinda short circuit.

One thing I notice about Ziggurat is there isn't much variety in weapons. Maybe it's because I haven't unlocked everything, or maybe it's due to bad luck... but I just keep seeing the same items.

Well tried out ToME.

RIP Stabby Face McDeadPants.

Didn't seem like there was much to do. Was outside, just kept going and finding more and more shit I couldn't use. Then something called a guardian fought me, and I was handling my own until some cobras decided to join in.

There's nothing I love more than a screen full of numbers.

I think it's the right thread to ask that : what's the deal with rouge/rogue ? Are so many people misspelling rogue ?

"Rouge" is french for "red". Nothing to do with rogue. As a french guy, it highly disturb me. Help me :|

Just like many people misspell "then/than", "definitely/defiantly", "a lot/alot" etc.
If rouge disturbs you, I'll just say that as an Italian, my language gets mangled much more often than French :p

Yes they are. It's just two letters swapped after all. Rouge is also an English word, so there's no excuse there.

I'm still disappointed that Red Rogue wasn't called Rouge Rogue.

Nice thread. My favorite roguelike/lite I've played is Dungeons of Dredmor, though I haven't been able to get into many others.

I really liked what I've played of Dungeons of Dredmor, but is it just me or is the final boss exponential harder than anything else in the game? The only time I got to him I had a great build and I was ripping through everything, then I got to him and I couldn't do anything. Maybe the build I had was just awful against him, but it was a frustrating end to an otherwise great game.

Oh man, best and worst thread on NeoGAF. Best because I've realized it's probably my favorite genre nowadays, worst because I worry about all the hours I will end up spending on these games. lol

One Way Heroics $3.50 (Steam)
Somewhat standard roguelike gameplay-wise except instead of dungeons it's set on a JRPG style world map that slowly scrolls to the right (with or without you). You have to get strong while traveling to beat the final boss, meanwhile managing "time" so the screen scrolling doesn't kill you. Has good modes/features for beginning players. Has lots of unlocks for player class/perks, and a limited space to save items for your next run.

I picked it up during the summer sale last year, so much fun. Add on the unlockables and it was well worth the sale price of a buck I believe. I'm holding out for some kind of update or expansion later on, hopefully adding more dialog with the fairy.

Endless mode is pretty fun too till everything is one shot or be one shot, lookin' at you forest guards. I'm saving the world, you can spare a few
hundred
fox pelts and unicorn horns right?

Yeah, that's probably true. Were you a melee build, by any chance? Dredmor has a ridiculously high curse rate, so unless you're unhittable or stacked to the gills in magic resist/reflect, he pretty much just dismantles your gear in pretty short order. It's probably worth just scavenging every clockwork saw blade from the vending machines in the last few levels and just pitching those at him while you use your mobility skills to keep your distance.

So, NetHack is coming to steam!

It's nice for historical purposes, but it really is a dinassour of a roguelike at this point.
That's kinda cool. I still fire up Nethack from time to time. After thousands of hours, there's something comforting about it. Probably is too esoteric/complicated for most people these days, though.

But I'd probably still recommend it to a lot of people so they can see where a lot of the affectations of modern roguelikes come from.

Junior, please.
Love this genre. Frustrating at times, but very zen in that permadeath is a constant reminder that nothing lasts forever!

My favourites are good old NetHack (and its variant SlashEM), Stone Soup, and Tales of Maj Eyal.

TOME in particular is one that I just keep coming back to, it's fucking amazing. Really good blend of overworld questing and roleplaying, combined with dungeon crawling.

Stone Soup is arguably too hard, I can't even get close to finishing. I think the best I ever had was a 2 rune run.

Oh, I played a lot of NetHack ( and loved every second of it ) when I was a younger lad.

I also put a lot of time into Dungeons of Dredmor. But thanks to this thread, I bought and installed ToME, which I have never played, and we'll see how that goes.

I was melee. Like I said, it felt like really frustrating game design from what was otherwise an amazing game. It kind of made me stop playing it to be honest.

Yep, my favourite as well. Aside from some of the humour falling flat (I mean, Portal jokes, come on) and some occasional bugs I absolutely loved it.
Messing around with random builds was occasionally hilarious.

Yep. Darkest Dungeon is also on my radar. And I can't turn down a nice looking turn based game, and roguelite on top of that. The only drawback for me is that there isn't a Mac version as I'm playing more and more of these games on my Macbook.

Risk of rain is great love the game
I remember getting it around launch and drones we insanely op
You would get just tons of them and bosses would just melt.

I just tried TOME today, it's great and seems quite fair. I really like that there is no hunger mechanic, it can be brutal in DCSS (even more playing races with high metabolism).

I really liked this one. If you want it a little cheaper and don't want to wait for a Steam sale, Playism has it for $1.99. You get a Steam key and a DRM-free download there.

Aside from that, ones I liked the most are Dungeons of Dredmor, which is my second longest played game on Steam, and Tales of Maj'eyal. Dredmor is very accessible with several difficulty options and the ability to turn permadeath off to get used to the mechanics (kind of similar to TOME's exploration mode in that regard). Great sense of humor too, and a lot of uniqueness and variety in the skills and abilities. Don't need to say much about TOME that hasn't already been said, but I liked it quite a bit. Chocobo's Dungeon on Wii wasn't a bad beginner's roguelike, there isn't really much of a penalty for dying, but a lot of the other aspects are there. It's not ultra challenging, but it's fun.

Darkest Dungeon and Crypt of the Necrodancer both look really good, I want to check those out someday.

Its been mentioned in the indie thread - looks really special - here's hoping it gets kickstarted - love the graphical style.

It still has 21 days to go, so I think it will at least make it's goal. I'd like it to reach some of the stretch goals (Vita and co-op, please!).

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I'm a Rougelike Virgin, I really enjoyed the Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon games because it was a license I liked, but then I tried out Shiren, and...I don't know, I guess it was above my level haha because I had a really difficult time with it.

I was wondering, I made a thread recently about another "Rougelite" I enjoyed as a child, Digimon World 2, but would that be considered one since there's not really the traditional Rougelike death penalty? It simply does the "Game Over = start from last save" deal, but otherwise it has randomized Dungeons with traps, inventory management, and a somewhat interesting level-up system in which you need to continuously "fuse" your Party Members, dropping them in level, but giving them the potential to go further in grinding.

^Though I only played one game of it last night, the ToME game suggested in this thread had settings for multiple lives etc.

One of my favorite genre of games. I'd personally recommend Dwarf Fortress for base-building type of game. The controls are said to be confusing, but stick with it and learn the ropes and I promise countless of hours will fly by. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

If you're more into survival in the wild, I'd recommend Unreal World, where you can build your own shelter, fish for food, passive/active hunting, combat vs. robbers/tribes/main enemy faction called the Njerpez. http://unrealworld.fi/

and if you're into modern-day dystopian setting with zombies...i'd recommend Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. where you can build your own shelter or stay in someone's abandoned house. Melee weapons from baseball bats to katana/fire axe, range weapons from throwing to guns. You can also build your own vehicle and customize it with spikes/generator/ have a portable kitchen/bed etc.... http://en.cataclysmdda.com/

Are you OneFJef? ;)

Cataclysm is the best actual roguelike I have ever played. DF is a must play too.

Have you guys heard about Children of Morta? It's currently on Kickstarter and is a rogue-like hack and slash with story elements. The art style looks great too.

Already a backer, and the art is really something else.

And remembered another great one. Teleglitch

It's a top-down-view ruthless action roguelike with some basic crafting and low poly art style. Hard as nails. Fantastic feeling reaching the end of the level.

Played ToME again, died on the 3rd screen again. This time I even had like a legendary dagger and magical dagger.... and some nogos guardian beat the shit outta me.

Just picked up Ziggurat and got to the last boss. Died and don't feel like playing the game again. It was interesting but 80% of all the weapons are the same.

I was curious about the weapon count as well, seems there's 17 not counting your wand... so more than I thought. Guess I'm getting unlucky with them or haven't unlocked since I've only seen 7 of them.

I own this game, too! There atmosphere is sooo dense. I almost would call it Sci-Fi Horror! I adjusted the controls to play kinda like Nuclear Throne :D (I play it with my xbox360 pad).

I have a major addiction to this genre but I am terrible at it. Keep buying them though.

Dungeons of Dredmore ate up loads of my time, never got very far as it seemed to take a long time to get anywhere but I loved dicking about in it. Used to play it on the train when I went home for Christmas.

Crypt Of The Necrodancer is my current love. Super addictive, fantastic gameplay and music. Could do with more items and stuff, but just beating on the monsters in time to the music is fun.

Teleglitch I've not been able to dive much in to, but has amazing atmosphere. Very old school FPS in a way. Creepy and oppressive.

Darkest Dungeon is very very tempting too.
