Nutrition Thread |OT| You Can't Outwork A Shit Diet

In the beginning of IF I was grumpy and no energy. Also drunk a lot of coffee, but a month or so my body got used to it
here's my before IF picture in one month

Here's an ice cream made with ice cube almond milk
It's thick like ice cream and not coarse like blended ice water
(Made also Mango,Pineapple, and Orange shake - all frozen except for the orange) all with a scoop of vanilla protein
Damn your belly looks awesome nowadays.

...Why are you by the way wearing a black glove on the first pic? :p

That ice cream looks heavenly good. I am thinking could I manage to do something like that myself... I have almond milk already and according to rumours my crappy blender should be able to crush ice cubes. I might need to give it a try.

I use this liquid stevia and I am totally in love with the taste. It is also relatively cheap and couple drops go a long way. I combine that with erythritol to sweeten up my daily things.

I also shamelesly add that if anyone wants to order from there first time, I have a nice little coupon code that will give you 5/10 dollars off depending how much you spent. The internet is full of codes like this, but mine is the only one that will give me benefits depending on how much you would use. ;)

That's the first time I started working out. I've never done weight training before
Then FitGaf told me no gloves :p

So I went to the shops to buy what I needed, and the only almond milk sort of thing they had was an "Almond flavoured drink". Useless.

I got some 0kcal Stevia powder, which I guess is about right. There was another Stevia one that had 370kcal per 100... which seemed like it might have been missing the point a bit.

I am lazy and use this one quite often:

13 cals per 100 ml. Perhaps not optimal, but I think it is quite alright none the less. I also totally love the taste.

Alpro was recommended by a couple of sites because apparently it doesn't have some sort of seaweed thing in it... or something. Most places in the UK seem to have it too.

I'm half tempted to make my own though. :)

Oh if you have almonds around, go for it! :D

It is super easy and delicious as well! Just let the almonds soak long enough before doing it. :)

if you don't mind shelling out dough go with what Sadetar said

I go through Almond milk in a week so I started making my own...and being cheap I use All Natural Almond Butter. :p
3 tbsp for 5 cups of water. Dates to sweeten it. pinch of Xanthum Gum for slight thick texture

Unsalted peanuts as a quick protein source. Good? Bad? Ok?
They supply them at work and I usually grab a handful in the morning and afternoon.

I am starting to workout, what foods I need to avoid and consume more?

i guess it depends on your goal...here's a bunch of foods on my list

lean proteins (fish, chicken, turkey, pork, occasional red meat, egg)
plenty of green veggies (brussels sprouts, asparagus, green beans, field mix, spinach)
starches (steel cut oatmeal, sweet potato, regular potato (limited), white/brown rice, quinoa)
whey protein powder
dairy (low fat yogurt, low fat cottage cheese)
fruits (mostly berries...blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)
occasional hummus

foods I avoid during the week:
breads, pasta
alcohol
refined sugars
fattier cuts of meat

1 day every weekend I pick a day to cheat...any food I want in any amount.

Someone will come in and say lowfat is stupid...but it's currently what's working for ME. I tried lower carb and high fat and it didn't work out for me personally.

Stupid's not the right word for it. Just not a requirement to lose weight.

It's definitely FAR, FAR easier to eat smaller calorie targets when you're doing low fat though.

I'm not even counting cals/macros anymore...got a nice rhythm down where I eat lower carb on non-lifting days, and eat just enough to not be hungry throughout the day, lots of water.

Losing a steady 2-3lbs a week...down 15 pounds in the last month and a half. Changed the timing of post workout meals etc which seems to have helped as well. I used to drink only a protein shake after a workout, but now I eat some oatmeal with a protein/fat and have my protein as a snack after that, seems to have made a huge difference for me.

I am going to check this one out.

I have been mulling stop drinking milk (I drink 1%) with my protein shakes in the morning. I really hate all the hormones and sugar in milk and I just want to stop drinking the stuff. However my concern with almond milk is the protein.

Is there any brand of almond milk that has more protein?

Subbed to this thread and gonna read the OP when I get some spare time today.

What I've really been looking for is a quick, cheap and long lasting easy to make lunch to take with me at work.

I feel like I'm looking at the holy grail and most internet searches leaves me to food where I really have to prepare and cook a shit ton of different ingredients.

Just something moderately healthy and not too much in fat and sugars while filling would be perfect. I might just force myself to learn to eat salad as much as I dislike it.

I use this (I'm in the US tho):

5g per 8oz. About as good as you'll get I think. Extra protein comes from pea/rice protein.

Per serving (8oz): 40 cal, 2g fat, 1g carb, 5g protein

If you cook yourself dinner then just increase the # of servings and bring that to lunch.

Almonds milk are good because they are low cal and mixes good with protein shake. That's where you get your protein

I'm not a salad eater dry greens eh. I prefer steamed/cooked veggies.
Last night I did tomato sauce (unsalted) ricotta cheese, and broccoli
Tonight I might bake eggplant tomato sauce mozzarella and ricotta cheese

It gets me too eat veggies

I am quite excited. A PT will check my diet and add his own ideas to it and also do me a diet for going keto. We will see how that goes. I have decided to stop this maintaining and go back to a cut. It was good to let my body rest a bit after losing quite much, but enough is enough. Time to move on.

I am going to check this one out.

Like mentioned in here, Almond milk generally don't have that much protein. It is still fairly easy to add protein powder to it and it ends up being delicious. I also use it for my smoothies and add protein with using also quark. The one I use has 56 kcal, 0,2 grams of fat and 8,5 grams of protein per 100 grams. It is ridiculously cheap (at least in here most likely the cheapest source of protein) and easy to use.

How do you guys feel about Meal Replacement shakes in order to lose weight? As far as quick weight loss measures. Specifically, the GNC Total Lean 25 shake for breakfast and lunch, and a healthy dinner accompanied by a kale/spinach based shake. Maybe small snacking in between of nuts and fruit.

For all the shakes, the nutritional info is almost exactly the same

Any tips for getting more fiber in my diet? I've been eating vegetable heavy meals lately, with hummus and some wheat bread / wheat naan for variety, but it's hard for me to really get more than 25g/fiber a day, since it's not like I consume more than 2 - 3 (small) slices of bread in a given day (I don't buy into the "whole wheat is great for you, eat crap tons of it!" propaganda). The vegetables help, but I'm already eating a lot (50 to 75 percent of the plate) and I'd have to eat a LOT MORE to get the fiber up.

I guess I could get more beans? But I'm honestly a bit sick of beans and would like other sources. That's why I got bread in the first place. I hadn't had bread in -months- and have taken to eating a slice here and there drizzled with olive oil, Mediterranean style.

I actually cut all fructose from my diet quite a while ago. But yesterday I got sick and while I was buying Tylenol at Walgreens I picked up two pints of Ben & Jerry's that were on sale. It's a one-time only thing, but I don't feel bad about it at all.

huh didn't knew they made Kashi
I think almost every brand you can think of that is healthier or more environmentally conscious is owned by a bigger company. Kashi, Ben & Jerry's, Burt's Bees, etc. we're all bought out by big brands looking to diversify in the early 2000's. Would be surprised to see them start buying companies like Optimal Nutrtion and other non crazy branded whey and supplement producers. Coco puffs now with 24g of ON protein per serving.

I wish more recipes had nutrition guidelines. No point making it if it doesn't fit my macros! (I can calculate it, but bleh, hassle)

I calculated it out for the hell of it...

Per Cake

2,500kcal
67.8g protein
299.5g carbs
126.0g fat

220.6g sugar
47.1g fibre

Might be giving that one a miss. :D

Have been looking at blenders a lot more. I really like the look of the Nutri Ninja Auto IQ. Reviewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w80VOHZehMk

Yep, that's what I'd probably have gone for if it was available back in the autumn (and I didn't get such a great deal on my Nutribullet Pro 900). The auto-timing would be a very useful feature, something I'd use every day when blending a greenie for lunch: set it off then wander off and do something else knowing it'll stop after a minute, rather than having to supervise it.

Annoyingly, the Ninja Auto IQ doesn't come with the large 32oz (900 ml) cup in the UK. The biggest Ninja include is 650 ml. For me, the standard cups it comes with wouldn't be big enough - that extra volume is really, really useful - remember, you cannot fill the cup right up for blending, you need to leave ~20% unfilled to let the stuff circulate while blending. Not to include the 900ml cup in the UK is a short-sighted decision by Ninja, IMO. You can expect to pay £20 to import a 32oz cup from the US eBay. Last time I checked they weren't available in the UK. The UK Bullet comes with a 32oz cup as standard.

That Ninja Pro IQ is often £80 delivered at Costco or £84 for non-members (price +5%). It's back up to £100 right now, which is still ~£20 cheaper than most places but not as good as £80..!

Anyone more knowledgable than I care to give their opinion on buying frozen veg/fruit vs fresh? I work away a lot and often only get a couple of days notice that I will be out of town for anywhere from 2-5 days which would often lead to me throwing out a lot of it if bought fresh. This led to me getting into the habit of buying frozen which is working well and whilst some stuff like broccoli doesn't taste anywhere near as nice its overall still enjoyable enough to eat and definitely more convenient but there is a lot of conflicting information out there about frozen vs fresh

One of the main Reasons I bring this up is I am looking at getting into the habit of making a shake for breakfast instead of having cereal or buying a bacon and egg toastie which would would mostly consist of frozen berries.

Well I'm not an expert but there is the argument that frozen is actually better because it's frozen right after which preserves all the nutrients. Meanwhile "fresh" is actually something that might have been picked when it was still raw (=some nutrients might still be missing) and spent few weeks travelling to the store (in which time some of the nutritional value might decrease).
