The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

I've only watched it on youtube but personally I found it pretty bland. It feels like the game is episodes 1-3 of a 10 part story and that it leaves a few too many things unanswered or unresolved.
I also hear that, but RaD have stated many times that they will make The Order a franchise and start developing its sequels after the first installment is completed. So I guess all the puzzling and unresolving matters will be answered in their next games :)

Appreciate the impressions. Seems to be the first overall negative one we have. It's interesting you preferred the first half of the game, and disliked the second half. In many of the other impressions, it was largely the opposite, with people seemingly preferring the second half as it apparently picks up in tempo a bit.
I'm surprised by that as well; it definitely was a slow burn for me, getting better as it went on. My favorite combat encounter happens near the end; it was so crazy and hectic, with particles clouding the air and everything, I was pissed when my PS4 didn't record it. Like I said in my impressions, it will be a divisive game for sure.

What? UC2 is not QTE heavy at all.

Well, I didn't exactly say that, but I more mean the whole 'running from falling objects', 'clambering up things' and 'losing footholds' "gameplay" that is so overdone in these games. I find it beyond insufferable. Let me create my own tension through interesting mechanics, tight pacing and clever encounter design.

Quick side note - I've had a few reports from fans that can redeem their Theme codes now. Can a few of you try and let me know?

Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with just making a great game in a tried and true genre. Not every single title has to push boundaries, and innovate, and revolutionize. Hell, Wolfenstein: The New Order was essentially a refinement of stuff those folks were doing since their Starbreeze days with a little bit more Half Life 2 thrown in, and was easily my favorite shooter in years. The Evil Within was pretty much Mikami's Greatest Hits, and with a bit more polish would've been really great. Etc. etc.

That's not to say I think The Order will be great, in fact I've seen enough to know I won't think very highly of it honestly, but there's nothing wrong with just wanting to make a great story driven shooter. We don't actually get a lot of those.

By unambitious I do not mean that every title should do something revolutionary gameplay wise. The gameplay should atleast be able to carve out a unique identity for the shooter. Uncharted, Gears did something gameplay wise that clearly distinguished them from other tps games. The unique identity should not just come from the setting or story. I have not played Wolfenstein NO but I am assuming it has its own identity gameplay wise and not just hey It has competent shooting. It needs something else. The order seems to have had no effort put into its gameplay beyond take cover and shoot. That is what seems to be so disappointing to me.

2.5 hours of ridiculously high quality cutscenes. It requires so much work to get the visuals and audio at this level.

I wouldn't have minded sitting back and just watching the cutscenes back to back without the gameplay if it were 1/4 the price.

That should be the icing on the cake and not the focus. If you can get a game to look good props. But only make it look good once all other pieces are in place. The most important pieces being mechanics, encounter and level design.

UC2 has the most flawless pacing in a game after RE4 and some of the best set pieces in games that are actually fun to play. The locomotion stage still blows me away and not just for the graphics. But yeah I see what you mean about losing footholds and stuff which was a tad overdone in 2 and way way overdone in UC3 and TR.

And i'm sure they will be, it just felt like there were too many that should've and could've been resolved in this one.

There's also things about the lore they never expand on or explain which I won't discuss here but really hurt this fictional universe they built.

After an hour or so with the game, I can definitely say it won't be for everyone. The AI isn't anything special, the shooting is by the numbers, and it's very cut scene heavy. That being said, I'm enjoying it. The universe they've created has me intrigued and it's so damn pretty. Looking forward to playing some more tomorrow.

Right now, I'm expecting a metacritic rating leveling out at somewhere between 60 to 70. Hopefully RAD gets to work on a sequel, because Lycans vs Humans multiplayer seems like a missed opportunity to me.

The game is a very solid, very engaging third-person shooter with some more interactive cinematic elements and quick-time events than the average shooter. The game puts it's focus on the characters and the story (both of which are very, very good) and uses the incredible atmosphere and visuals to rope you in.

This is as linear as it gets in terms of single-player games (something I welcome in a market that is suffering from open-world, "checklist gaming" overload); but I can forgive the linear nature because of how gorgeous everything is. I'm someone who doesn't mind linear gameplay, and I often take the time to absorb the environments.

The shooting is par for the course, gunplay is varied a bit because you're using weapons designed by Nikola Tesla. Some of these guns are really cool, sporting innovative (for the era) secondary fire modes.

Every context sensitive action takes place within a cinematic context, so you always feel as though you're part of the story. Dying/failing takes on a similar form and your characters always have reactions to those instances.

The frequent bursts of gameplay are balanced with equally frequent bursts of cinematic storytelling, but it's all seamlessly integrated and all unfolding in real time. At no point in time have I ever been taken out of the story with a jarring cut to the action, or vice versa. The game flows together like nothing I've ever seen. If you're someone like me who appreciates video games as an alternative form of cinematic storytelling (interactive), then you might enjoy this.

I've just passed chapter 5 and I've been playing for roughly 4 hours.
Sounds like my cup of tea.

Not going to say much other than 1 thing.
The AI in this game isn't just bad, it actively makes the game far more difficult to enjoy than it should. Hardest difficulty still sees tons of errors, glitches, and just horrid AI programing and enemies can be boxed instantly or walled without any difficulty, resulting in a congo-line of deaths as they all follow the same trajectory to their doom ignoring anything going on in the level. Its like a full spectrum of code is missing in their programming. I can't believe whats happened so far a couple times. This game is going to be a gif generator for years.

Ok I take back what I said about consistent mentions of competent AI across the different impressions. Evidently there are some impressions that do not agree on that front lol.

That may be true but if you do not make a good first impression as a new IP you may not have the opportunity to continue that story.

Yep everyone is not going to agree on everything that is just how it is.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
For some reason Kingsmen makes me appreciate this game just a little bit more. What a coincidence having these two stories based on the Arthur's Knights mythos release around the same time.

Best action flick I've seen in a while. Quite funny too. Only off note was the
raunchy porn shot of the girl's ass at the end.

You've played 1 hour...

A little premature to give meta scores ;P

But I get it.

Since I haven't played the game yet, the film just made me want to play it more lol. But yes I agree, one of the best action films in a long while, which is strange given how fantastic the last year or so has been for action films, what with the release of The Raid 2 and John Wick as well.

Uh oh

I hope Pessino's body is ready on review day.

No, it's not. Shitty example used. We're talking about a product that cost multiple millions to develop for on an already dying system. The fact that the game is still revered till this day is a testament to how advanced it was back in the day.

NVM: Read the context wrong.

eh, honestly not really. Unless the gameplay wildly changes halfway through the game, its a pretty solid indicator of the level of 'fun' to expect. Obviously he can't account for the full story arc and how they handle it, but an hour of a typical game (basically not an mmo or moba) is enough to get at least a general idea.

I certainly hope it's better than his estimate however :\, though there seems to be enough impressions and video out now that people should be able to form their own opinion on whether or not this is a game for them.

The way the Mayfair theme zooms in on the image for the lower section, it feels like it's zooming in a bit too much. It's quite nice for a free theme but I might just stick with the Transistor theme for now.

I agree, I'm just going on the assumption that the core gameplay loop won't differ much from what I've played so far. And for the record, I don't see a 7/10 as an abomination of a score like some people these days do. :p

I'd disagree on this theory, then again I'm not expecting much from the game too! Got my copy already, will give my own impressions in a few hours.
