Maybe he is busy reapplying his screen protector in a dust proof room?

Ya know I spent about three hours getting the screen protector dust free reapplying it on my new Nintendo 3DS XL. Did that today. I never did get it quite right. Used packing tape to get the dust off after I applied it.

What is there to explain? You expose the screen to dust/smudges, then you have to be thorough and clean, and then apply; it makes a hard job harder.

Taking off its shipping screen cover actually causes a tiny bit of static charge which can cause dust to stick to the screen, meaning you'd have to use a cloth to wipe it off.

The exact same thing you'd have to do anyway if he opened it.

You wasted your time.

Honestly, the man was just too fast. Have you ever seen how a Mini is packaged? It can be completely unwrapped in seconds.

Yes, I own one and the Air 2.
As soon as he started to tear the outer box shrink I would have said "Hey there, hold on."

You straight up dodged that question and it feels like you're trolling now. You know exactly what he was asking about.

Plus Apple being Apple, the top part of the box doesn't just fall off. It slowly comes apart like taking off a band aid slowly due to its vacuum seal thingy. Its actually very annoying.

What? Even if the dude is an expert it takes a good 5-10 seconds to get the plastic wrap and the box slid out of the cover.

At no point did you tell the associate to stop? You just let it go, especially when it's such a big deal to you?

Sorry, this all just seems insane.

Same thing happens every single time I buy a phone. It has gotten to the point where I try to push the fact that I work in the computer industry until their ears are bleeding so that when it is time to leave, they say, "Well you work with computers so you probably know how to set this up." Same thing with Comcast when they insist on sending a tech to my house to set up a modem. I know it is a really obnoxious thing to do, but really, it is the only way to get people to not mess with my stuff. Before you say, "Just ask them not to." I have asked them not to. They still say stuff like, "Well it is part of our _____ customer satisfaction guarantee to do _____. We are just trying to make sure you leave happy." as they are taking things out of the box or as they are setting up appointments and telling me there is a fee to cancel.

I wish the mobile version of Gaf would also show who the OP was as well. It would save me some time. For example this thread 😐

Why not?

They just paid you for being a really finicky, fussy, problematic customer.

This is like a weird turducken made of gripes and brags.

I'm still tripping on why opening the box got you so heated when the iPad you were returning was an open box purchase. You wouldn't have had an iPad to return for in-store credit to purchase a price matched NEWER iPad if you weren't cool with the idea of owning something that was already opened.

and NONE of that further explains why your reaction/response to this "helpful" gesture is to become personally offended as if the clerk was trying to malign your iPad skills or whatever, as opposed to simply telling the clerk as you're watching them open a box you don't want opened, that you'd prefer if they didn't open the box and peel off all the plastic stuff as you get a kick out of doing that sorta shit. There is almost zero reason for you to act the way you acted unless the clerk was being openly condescending to you and expressing the idea that she didn't believe you could actually do it yourself.

Yup. Couldn't have said it better myself. The manager and cashier I'm sure are relieved H doesn't want to do business with them anymore.

When the iphone 6 was released I went to target to pick one up. They wouldn't sell it without opening it first. I told them to piss off and got one at Best Buy without that issue.

When I upgraded to the iPhone 6 plus the people at the At&t store did it as well and only to forcefully install their app onto our phones. I was so mad and while I kept cool the lady helping us knew that I was annoyed.

I'm confused why you didn't just tell him you wanted to do all that yourself. Your story makes it seem like you turned around and next thing you know it was completely unwrapped and he was already handling it. Like he had some superhuman box opening speed

You can adjust the settings for it to show that. Turn "show thread detail" on. It will show you who made the OP and last post in the main forum.

Edit: beaten

Same with my 3DS and Vita. I bought a pack that had 3 for each screen for the 3DS and got a satisfactory result with the 2nd attempt on the top screen but third attempt on the bottom. This was using a cloth for cleaning screens and glasses etc. too.
With the Vita, on the first attempt I got a perfect seal over the visible portion of the screen but a single piece of dust is under at the edge of the protector. I couldn't be arsed trying again seeing as the lit up part is clear, I knew I wouldn't get another on any more cleanly.

I don't bother with phones and tablets though, gorilla / sapphire glass are good and common enough that they'll last without usually.

I'd be annoyed if an employee opened my shit without asking first, but to spend the next 4 hours arguing with a manager about it? You must have a lot of time on your hands.

That is not what happened, the whole process of me getting a new iPad took 4 hours, the initial incident took roughly 45 minutes. Again this scenario isn't nearly as outlandish as one might think; surely others have returned things and bought a cheaper, better thing in one trip.

Yeah, I returned my old Mini 3 to get a new one for the color I wanted since I found a good deal to PM. I was set to go, and the guy just opened the fucking box. I was like, dude, what the heck? He was all like "Don't worry sir, I'll get you set up and ready to go quickly". I was all like "I never asked for this; please ask for permission next time and give me a new, sealed replacement." He asks "So you bought it as a gift?" and I'm like "Frankly, that is none of your concern, the only concern is replacing the open product, with all due respect sir."

He ask you a question, why did you get so defensive? Do you talk the same way to your friends or people you just met that aren't employees?

Why couldn't you tell him the reason that you wanted to open it for yourself? I'm just confused of why you were defensive when he ask you a simple question.

I don't want people opening my purchases in front of me. It's an iPad, not a missile defense system, it's not that complicated to set up.

I bought a phone and the guy asked me if I wanted it opened and my number transferred and sim installed right there. It was my provider's store, so I said yeah, so I could make sure the phone was on their network and the number was correct and everything.

I wouldn't want a BestBuy person doing that though.

I think it was more of the principal of the issue and the fact that people that buy things often times get treated like criminals if people think they are going to resell them or do something that isn't what the company wants them to do. Though I can't really speak for OP. That is just why I would do that in that situation. Like when you get asked what you could possibly need a can of compressed air for. I've been in that situation and it isn't really fun.

You can tell it's a Huelen thread because every word in the thread title is capitalized for some bizarre reason.

Yup. You nailed it. That's my situation exactly. The 3D effect only makes the dust more noticeable too. Thankfully, I finally got it.

I agree with OP in the sense that they shouldn't be opening your shit, but wasting 4 hours because of it? Sigh, them first world problems.

And what occupied the remaining 3 hours and 15 minutes? Restoring from a backup?

This part stands out to me too. Its ok to buy an open box model but not ok to buy one that was unsealed right before your eyes. Right. I don't believe you OP.

Well... you get a discount on open box. You wouldn't buy a new iPad off of Amazon and expect them to send you the iPad outside of the box. However, you would (Well maybe no you personally) buy a used iPad and expect it to not be sealed.

Edit: Just wanted to point out that I am really bad about new items being opened for me. I don't wanna say I am OCD because I don't think it is THAT bad, but when I buy new products, I keep the plastic on them and will put everything back in the original packaging whenever I am done using it. The only exception to this is my TV and my computer... One time I bought guitar hero (I was, like, 11) and I kept it all in the original packaging. Disassembled the guitar after playing every time. When it came time to trade it in, the people at GameStop thought I was returning it. They were kinda shocked when I told them I had used it since I also taped all the packaging back up. I also will not buy a product if someone else even touched the physical product before me.

I think this is where the phrase 'pick your battles' comes in handy. I'd rather deal with an extra 15 minutes of applying a screen protector (and honestly I wouldn't bother with one for an iPad unless I was going to let kids handle it, which I would never do anyway) than kick up a stink to involve managers and whatnot. It's still a brand new iPad, it's not like it loses its virginity if another pair of hands opens it up in front of me.

I'd be livid if my shit was opened. I'd flat out refuse it. In fact you pay at the end of the transaction so there would be no money handed over if I'm not correct?

So the clerk was able to remove the plastic wrapping on the box, open the box, remove the ipad from the box, and remove the plastic wrapping on the ipad before you noticed he was doing this?

Wasn't he doing it at the counter in front of you like you mentioned?

Were you just daydreaming about applying that screen protector on that untouched, dust free screen?

No, that's pretty bad.
