tri-Ace acquired by Nepro Japan, becomes dedicated smartphone/tablet mobile dev

Tri-Ace was a very interesting dev. Their games tended to feel like experiments, which resulted in very unique games. It's too bad some of these games had such poor or awkward writing, given their termination. I would have liked to play something like SO4 with an at least passable storyline. The story alone is enough to keep me from completing VP2, as well.

The state of the industry is a tragedy. Within 5 years time, I can't imagine what sort of hollow shell it will be.

These are horrible news. I want the mobile market to fucking leave. We've had gaming on the go for ages, no need for it on phones.

Not unexpected really. tri-Ace owned no IPs and their stick trying to get paid to work on AAA projects got shorter and shorter. Just kinda sad that Phantasy Star Nova turned out to be the last of its kind.

I want Gotanda and Norimoto to try something new.

Please correct me if I am mistaken but isn't the japanese gaming market going mobile now? so this don't mean their death right? (or are we just sad about them not making consoles/handheld games anymore?)

This actually significantly secures their future in terms of continuing to operate.

A shame because of their past.

But other than Resonance of Fate they made some pretty terrible games last gen, so this isn't surprising

Can't say I'm not disappointed. Probably a good decision for the financially seeing the trend in Japan. I just won't be playing any of their output.

Star Ocean 3 and especially 4 weren't very good, but at least they were scifi/space traveling, a subgenre that's far to rare in the J/RPG genre. I suppose SO5 would probably have never happened anyway, but it's still a shame.

Seeing this news saddens me because Tri-Ace was one of the developers that always took risks with their deep game play mechanics even if their games weren't huge commercial hits on the same scale as a Final Fantasy. They were definitely one of my favorite JRPG developers. I understand why they're going to focus exclusively on mobile games (see Mistwalker for proof) but the fact is I'll never buy a single mobile game so that's a huge bummer. I'm definitely gonna end up checking out Lightning Returns one of these days as one last way to pay my respects.

I think I'm one of the few people who enjoyed Infinite Undiscovery with all its flaws and all. Resonance of Fate is one of my favorite games last gen as well so much that I got 1000/1000. Their final achievement note said "Thanks for playing. " :(

Most people here probably don't put much/any time or thought into mobile games. From that perspective, this is little different from them shutting down (granted, with the benefit that (most of) the employees keep their jobs).

Well, this sucks.

I wonder if there's any chance Star Ocean and/or Valkyrie Profile will continue on (even though it wasn't looking likely even with them still independent) without them under a new developer with Square Enix.

Same here.

surely square-enix could've used them? it worked out well for XIII-2. what a shame, although they'd been silent for so long that I had lost all hope they'd make another console game.

Maybe this means some great mobile games. Hate to see 'em go, but if they can do some neat things and stay alive it might not be as terrible as it seems.

Maybe?

Possibly?

tri-Ace is actually a significant expansion for Nepro depending on how many of the employees stay. Nepro's own MGS (Mobile & Game Studio) had only 86 employees this January: http://www.mgst.co.jp/company/outline.html Nepro itself has about as many employees as tri-Ace (~130).

tri-crescendo seem to have settled into the role of Namco support studio. They did Tales of Symphonia HD and supported the development of Super Smash Bros.
They were/are also heavily involved in programming for Tales of Zestiria. tri-Crescendo stopped doing "AAA" games on its own after Eternal Sonata, but compared to tri-Ace they always have been a lean company able to work with minor projects.

Sad, sad news. =( I would really love to see another console action RPG from them that was as fun as Star Ocean 4. And who doesn't want another Valkyrie Profile?

Tri-Ace stuff was always flawed but fun and generally had some depth to it. I will miss their contributions. Oh well, here's hoping their first mobile title seriously kicks butt.

I don't understand. Star Ocean was supposed to be good again. Valkyrie Profile was supposed to have a third game. I just don't understand. This isn't how it was supposed to be.

Looking at their history, my favorite game of theirs was probably FF13-2, which I only thought was pretty good. However, with that said, I'm still really sad to see this happen - they were always willing to experiment & take chances and that's something that we could definitely use more of.

VP3 was never coming. All the games you'd want from them were never coming. And SE and Sega buying them? HA.
I'd not like any of those wing nuts owning triace. I will miss their games but life moves on.

I want to be happy for tri-Ace since they'll get to continue on, but this is basically a death knell for the tri-Ace I knew and loved. Guess Hrist will never get her own game.

I think I'm one of the few people who enjoyed Infinite Undiscovery with all its flaws and all.

I'm right there with you. Infinite Undiscovery was a huge pile of wasted potential, but the story had enough campy/so bad it's good moments to make me enjoy the experience overall. I had been thinking about replaying it. Guess I will in honor of our fallen friend.
