Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

You can also see it here and worse, Forza uses like two triangles to build the curve

GT7 has a very good chance of looking better in some areas. Although GT7 will be 60FPS, I'm quite sure Polyphony will no doubt blow minds again with their sorcery. I don't think real time global illumination will be implemented in GT7 though.

Forza 6, on the other hand, has little to no chance of dethroning Driveclub IMHO. It has to run at a rock solid 60FPS on weaker hardware.

Can't wait to see Special Stage Route 7 and also Tokyo R246 in GT7. We're lacking city tracks right now.

I tried to take you seriously until I read the bolded, then I knew you were taking the piss....................right?

Nope. Sometimes the clouds are bright orange for no apparent reason. Sometimes purple.

Of course nature can make these colors, but not with the other weather conditions on display when I have seen these.

Yesterday I saw orange clouds going back home.
It was a normal evening.

Also, sometimes the sky is red for no aparent reason too.

One wouldnt know...

Do any of the racing games in this thread have shadow casting particles or maybe even (doubt it) particles which cast shadows?

Best way to tell would be to go under a trees shadow and do donuts probably. Even GT had that.

Oddly enough most people are quick to forget how realistic FH2's lighting is and it's IQ. DC trounces it in rainy weather settings but overall FH2 is IMO more consistent.

Here's a couple of my Xbox Record that moments with it... feel free to GIF them:

It's a toss up IMO. Driveclub looks more realistic in terms of lighting, but Forza has good, though stylized, lighting too.

Forza Horizon 2: (Photo mode until we get a screenshot function)

There are two car's headlights illuminating the road textures.

Both games get good results, but one is aiming for realistic while another is aiming for postcard lighting. I do think that Forza Horizon 2 has more realistic behavior for rainbows though.

The volumetric clouds in DC is really what sets it apart in overcast/bad weather lighting conditions. This is why is falls apart in broad daylight/sunny weather IMO. FH2 is more consistent but definitely would have been nicer with a more dynamic system. Textures and sharers are also better in FH2.

Getting realistic, life like lighting is a lot harder to accomplish, and more technically taxing than simply stylised lighting. Honestly, no other game has looked as consistently life like as Driveclub imo. It's quite impressive how realistic Driveclub's lighting can look, in such a wide variety of different lighting conditions. The dynamism of it is what adds to it's quality.

All but two of these shots are pre-weather patch. All are gameplay shots.

Times I've seen both games lighting in what I'd consider like-for-like conditions, they've been closer than many enthusiasts would probably admit. That's the best thing I could say about both games. The assets visible in a given scene make an incredible difference. Headlight effects have a more nuanced effect in Driveclub, and things like the projected shadows are just plain tasty.

driveclubs clouds and sky simulation and lighting in general are as realistic as it gets w/ current game technology.
Yeah. It's a middleware solution too if I'm not mistaken. More devs should use it, the volumetric clouds in Driveclub are excellent.

Also in regards to sky color, this is a shot I took a few months ago while I worked morning shift at a lumber yard. (Taken on a cell phone)

What about the lighting falls apart in this?

It's not just the cloud system that shows DC's beauty. It's a great looking game, period. It shines more in morning, evening, weather, etc. because that's the same way it is in real life. Certain lighting conditions look better than others.

That being said, it looks pretty great in clear conditions regardless.

Man its crazy how much we can nitpick at games nowadays. Just shows how impressive they are and its just the beginning of the generation.

About that, nothing. But personally I've seen instances while playing in third person view in direct sunlight where it looks like the car isn't touching the road because the shadows get all weird.

On the rare occasion that does happen, it can look weird, but it is also completely realistic. Ultimately the lighting model is fully dynamic, so what you're seeing is still a realistic and mostly accurate representation.

Rushy, the games director, actually responded to this in one of the threads.

Rushy said:
I have to admit that it took me a while to get used to this, but it is entirely physically accurate - we don't use fake shadows or mask sunlight by ambient occlusion, which often hides this 'effect'.

Under strong lighting conditions and from the right angle there won't be a shadow visible beneath the car. To show this I took a car out into the Evo car park, parked it so the sun was from directly behind and held a camera up in the air at similar angle to the chase camera.

Nothing is faked or baked in this image either ;) Number plates have been obviously obscured though.

no point, weve been through this a thousand times with the same people

To be fair, there are actual lighting issues that aren't the same as that real-world example where light casts beneath tires because the shadow resolution, while filtered nicely, isn't the same as the contours of the tires themselves. Though plenty of people I've seen react to "weird" shadows are just seeing light from behind the "camera" position.

Also this is going to be a really weird request, but can someone take a picture of the driver's feet in an Ariel atom in Driveclub? I haven't unlocked it yet but someone here on gaf mentioned something about Driveclub racers not having feet once lol. It's not for comparison, I'm just curious. They have to have feet right?

I don't have a pic but in some cars when in cockpit view, pan the camera down and you can see the driver's feet.

Seriously, Driveclub is the best looking racing game right now without competition. It's amazing what Evolution achieved with the relatively mid end hardware of the PS4. And to think this is just the start of the generation.

Figured a bump is in order. Here is some Forza 5/Horizon 2 gameplay because Xbox One owners can finally share their screenshots!
All in game, gameplay (not replays or photo mode)

What's with the motion blur?

Does the game have motion blur as well as being 60fps?

I guess I'll ask in this thread, guys, what's the best Rally game on PS3 ?

WRC 4 or DiRT 3?

Any others worth considering?

Need something to play before WRC 5 later this year.
