Games you unashamedly want more devs to copy

Why the hell do we not have a whole genre of DeusEx-likes? Something is wrong with this industry.

My pick as well. I wish more games had maps with multiple solutions and a world and set of characters that react to your gameplay choices rather than what dialogue option you chose.

Mass Effect 2: focus on characters and telling a story that isn't about saving the entire galaxy (yes, the trilogy is about that, but ME2 specifically isn't. It's mostly about saving Terminus colonies) and don't skimp on the final mission. Dragon Age 2 could have pulled this off as well if it hadn't been insanely rushed.

star wars jedi knight.

Must have been some of the best star war games i have played and it blows my mind that we havent seen that type of gameplay used again (at least wide spread).

Also had fantastic multiplayer.

I would love for an mmo that plays like that (or a new star war game perhaps).

Paper Mario
Super Smash Bros

Both went in a weird direction after the second game and may or may not ever return to what I originally loved.

Playstation All-stars should've just flat out copied smash honestly with ring outs and such included. It was a ok game, but could've been more If they copied smash a bit more lol.

Well my dream game since I was about 11 has already been made, Skate. They pretty much nailed it for a first attempt (vert riding could have been much improvd though).

I'd love to see the design ethos of Skate applied to a snowboarding game. As sim a possible, with gorgeous mountain environments. I'd die a happy man.

Majoras' Mask. The fact that no other game has the same time mechanic is criminal.

I always thought that Dead Rising 1's way of handling game cycles was a bit like MM. Each NG+ let you keep your level-ups and certain keys, and it was ultimately up to you to repeat the cycle until you got the outcomes you wanted.

Blur since we'll never get a sequel.

And Flatout Ultimate Carnage, as my PC won't be able to run Bugbear's next game.

And I wouldn't mind well done horde modes in most 3rd person shooters.

Red Faction: Guerilla

Free form, open world, physics based destruction. Add a little more structure to it, vary the world a little more, push the destruction to current gen levels and it could be amazing and still unique amongst games today. At the moment, the only thing on the horizon that sounds like it's even coming close to this is the new Crackdown.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Love the combat and job system. Could love more SRPGs like FFT.

Xenogears - I don't mind the typical, run of the mill JRPG, but I have a deep fondness for Xenogears because it wasn't afraid to take risks when it comes to the story. I really liked the theological/philosophical themes and the complexity of the plot. I doubt they'll ever go back and make the other 5 games in the series, but I'd like to see more JRPGs with storylines dealing with potentially controversial themes.

Sword Familiar

Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV (Classicvania, NES vanias will do as well.)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Metroidvania)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Multiplayer Seiken Densetsu
Mario 64
Wild Guns
Wonder Boy III or Wonder Boy in Monster World

<insert other game I like>

Copy away.

Why are there no WarioWare clones on mobile? It's absolutely perfect. It is just perfect for that platform. Just copy WarioWare Touched! and put it on mobile. Why has this not happened? I've been waiting for a WarioWare clone for iOS since day 1 of the App Store.

Or a touch only platformer like Kirby Canvas Curse/Rainbow Curse, or like Kirby Mass Attack.

The world needs more smash clones and a few fallout/skyrim clones here and there won't hurt.

Smash clones have been attempted... but they're never even 10% as good as smash. We don't need more smash clones, they all get left in the trash.

I'd like more big budget metroidvanias. Right now they're in the indie world, which is great, but i'd like to see big franchises recast in the metroidvania genre.

Dragon's Dogma in terms of basically perfecting what Action RPG gameplay should be like, and depth of character creation.

Grandia for JRPGs. It does not need to be anime, but a game with Valkyria Chronicles gameplay would be nice (yes, I plan on buying Codename: S.T.E.A.M.).

Edit: Yes, I played Child of Light.

Always wondered this too. I remember looking for one on the app store after the last one came out thinking surely someone has at least made a lazy clone, but I never found one.

I own a PS4 and I want "copies" because I also want more devs to experiment with some of the mechanics of the Souls series and see if anything new and exciting comes of that.

Also, while not perfect, Lords of the Fallen was considered a solid game by many and easily one of the best things City Interactive and Deck 13 have done in quite some time. It's pretty presumptuous to tell other people what they should or shouldn't want.

I want, most of all, for developers to be unafraid to implement mechanics and systems that are experimental and uniquely restrictive in ways that are informed by the story. In return, these mechanics can influence the story as it develops and make it more unique as well.

Case in point: death mechanics have been handled the same way in so many games, and Souls dared to do it differently. By making the loss of souls so punishing, they made them a uniquely valuable commodity. By making death "not the end" but a step on the road to madness, they allowed for NPC's across the whole range of this desperation.

Tactics Ogre

There are hardly any SRPG games even released every year. Most are way too easy to be any fun. They also usually have bad stories. Tactics Ogre has branching paths.

This one.

Also: Someone should copy the shit out of Kingdom of Amalur's battle system, but figure out a way to add party combat to it.

A Halo clone for PC would be pretty great. With the direction Halo seems to be going it would be nice to have a good Halo game, even if it's not really a Halo game.

Fire Emblem. How come there are no Fire Emblem clones!? Even a mobile one would work, it's a no brainer.

Rogue Squadron. Give me an arcadey space shooter with unlocks. PLEASE.

Escape Velocity. Cannot require fancy graphics (I'd prefer it not to so I don't have to buy an expensive PC - so goodbye Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous), cannot have insane travel distances (multiple jumps are okay though), but my space trader/fighter games needs a large universe, lots of ships, and ideally, the option to capture ships to create a fleet of escorts.

Neverwinter Nights. Giving players tools to create their own campaigns is fantastic. There was so much diversity in player-made campaigns, and online servers.

I mean, what the fuck. Its one of the best RPG battle systems of all time, a staggeringly fun mix of real time tactical movement and turn based collectable card gameplay and no-one is doing anything else with those ideas? Aside from that Giant Spacekat game? Like, why did none of the ideas from this system catch on?

Have you seen the preview material for Sword Coast Legends? Not quite the same thing but pretty close. I'm dying to play it.

I wish there were more Zelda clones with proper/ well designed dungeons.

DarkSiders did not scratch that itch. What a horrible series.

...and I'd love there to be a third series based on AceAttorney's and Danganronpas lie-puzzle solving mechanics.

I would recommend System Shock 2 to anyone wishing for more Metroid Prime.

Also, yes. I need more System Shock: Games that feature very detailed inventory systems, a good story mostly told via audio logs, crazy replayability, SCIENCE- FREAKIN- FICTION FPS.

Yes, I have played Bioshock. Will play Alien: Isolation soon.

EDIT

Have you played Umineko no Naku Koro Ni?

It's starting to happen but not nearly to the extent I wish it would, but Dark Souls. Not just the die/lose experience and parts of the combat... there aren't many games that are able to replicate the same type of dread and immersion that the first two games provided and a way of telling a rich world's lore that barely interfered with gameplay.

Salt and Sanctuary seems to be the closest thing that has appeared so far, but it's a 2D game. Not that that diminishes my interest but it's not the same as having a 3D one to explore like in Demon's and Dark Souls and something as linear as Lords of the Fallen and with such a generic aesthetic doesn't really interest me nearly as much. It borrows some of the ideas from Souls games but those ideas don't mesh well with the rest of the game's design.

So yeah please, developers. If you're going to mimic some game, mimic the Souls ones.
