Core gamers to drive PC growth past PS4, Xbox One and Wii U, says OGA

The gaming industry is in the midst of a fantastic time when not only are consoles thriving in a growing market, but so are PCs. The Open Gaming Alliance (OGA) recently worked with the market research company DFC Intelligence to forecast important shifts in the PC gaming industry looking forward.

In a press announcement sent to Examiner.com today, the OGA believes core gamers are expected to continue to "drive record growth for PC games" in the coming years.

In the graphic above, you can see the dominant performance of PC gaming over the past half dozen years or so. Console is still strong with overall growth being clear since 2012. Despite what reports may suggest, the next few years should continue to show unprecedented growth from consoles due to the popularity of the PS4, Xbox One and Wii U.

DFC provided some internal perspective on the apparent growth in the PC markets. DFC Analyst David Cole talked about PC's growth and some of the major driving factors behind it. "Much of the growth is driven by pure demographics," Cole said. "We continue to identify a core group of consumers for whom playing on the PC is a major pastime.

Revenue Growth =/= Good games as evident by their Tablet phone numbers. That said More Good PC and Console games out there the better. remember most "analysts were saying both where going to disappear in a tidalwave a iOS shovelwear just a few years ago.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I'm not getting the graph. Or better: it's entitled "Global Gaming Software Revenue", but then it goes about million of units and...20 millions for all the games in 2014 sounds wrong, even more so less than 5 millions for handhelds. Maybe they're referring to hardware sales? But, then, how that does compare with mobile sales, which are much higher than around 15 millions.

...What does this graph mean

Well if you look at it another way. Handhelds is pretty much ONLY NINTENDO. All other categories are made up of may manufacturers. Pretty sure Sony is abandoning handhelds eventually. It would be bad if a single platform out performed those combined platforms.

I am intrigued by the prediction of how many units for phones and tablets in 2019 and over taking consoles. For some reason I just don't see that happening, but who knows what's going to come out in 4 years.

Of course the 'open gaming alliance' would make such a prediction. The proprietary gaming alliance has something to say about these claims.

That's revenue not units. PS3 and 360 both did 80+ million each and Wii 100+ million yet "3 consoles" bar can't even pass 30 Million?

Even if you exclude Sony, you'll see the decline in sales for handhelds on that graph.

Of what?

What Phone/Tablet "anything" only moved ~1 Million in 2009?

I don't know. It seems only OGA and DFC know what they mean by "Million of Units".

Look at all that money Nintendo flushes down the toilet by not releasing their games on phones and tablets.

What category would steam machines fall under? pc?

Yes, they're just prebuilt PCs with included controllers and a gaming-oriented OS. They provide a "console-like" experience in some ways, but the important parts of the system are still PC.

Coming into this thread, to say I'm going straight back out. Can't be bothered dealing with the inevitable arguments in here

Chart says console decline in 5 years, so no next gen?

Anyways put me in this boat. I just do not have a desire to turn my consoles on anymore and just fiddle-fart around on my PC/PC games.

That's a crazy chart.

90% of my gaming is done on handhelds.

That doesn't take away from the fact dedicated handheld gaming is dying and being replaced ar a record pace by the smartphone/tablet/mobile industry. Just look at the sheer revenue and downloads and play time for games like clash of clans etc.

I think if some really solid, simple to use Steam machines really take off, we could see this happen. If not, I think there will continue to be a strong argument for consoles for the average person.

I love my gaming PC, but it's far from the most user friendly item when it comes to a lot of newly released titles... Then again, if the build quality of newly released titles continues to drop like it has (Halo, Drive Club, The Evil Within, DOA, ect.) then the PC actually starts to look a little better. At least there intrepid modders can do something about broken titles.

Also, ouch at that handheld stat. I mean, I'm pretty sure the Vita will be my last handheld unless Nintendo's next system is somehow unified, but wow is that low. It's a shame because very little of that handheld talent seems to have migrated to making games of similar quality in the app space. (There are fantastic notable exceptions, but they remain exceptions.)

It's never like this.

PCs hibernate as consoles flourish, historically. I am open to the idea it'll be different this time, but I don't quite understand what they're saying differs this time round.

I agree. PC gaming is in a really great place right now but it needs a gateway device, a hero device, its own Google Nexus.

Just look at the current state of the market. Do you really see any signs of PC hibernation? If so, where? Because I see virtually every multiplatform game being ported to PC, I see a ton of quality PC exclusives, I see a wealth of innovation and I see Steam breaking one record after another. This is nothing like previous console generations.

Excellent news for core gaming! Glad to see there are some who project healthy console sales will continue to grow in tandem with PC. Tired of all that "everything is dying" talk.

Steam was nowhere near as big at the start of last gen as it is now. The difference just in that is night and day. PC gaming as a whole is a lot more accessible now then it has ever been in the past.

All of this is true but i do think the biggest contributing factor is growth in emerging markets, especially Asia.

Most of the growth there is on PC and Mobile.
