Honestly, reading reviews and watching impressions, the visual novel aspects don't even seem that large. It sounds more like the turn based strategy game takes center stage here.

It saddens me that people are being turned off because it makes it seem like they don't want to work their brain with the whole strategy thing.

I still plan on getting this soon though X3

why? there are so many other better made titles out or soon coming out that would make folks a bit more cautious with their purchases.

simple case of game does not look interesting enough for some to not consider buying it.

just because it is a title you want does not mean other do let alone be a reason for them to change their minds on it.

What I meant is that some are losing interest because it appears to be less VN and more Strategy, as some posted if the Strategy part of the game is serviceable/good, then its still worth giving a try. I can get if they don't want to get it NOW, but they shouldn't be shying from it because its different.

It has no nothing to do with "not wanting to work your brain." A lot of people who watched that bluemaxima video were completely turned off by the strategic gameplay displayed and didn't like what they saw.

Also, if certain people have a preference for certain genres, there's nothing wrong with that.

edit; for the record, it seems like almost everyone in this thread is planning to get this game eventually. Even those who seem to be on the fence about the strategic elements of the game.

Well I apologize if my post seemed rude :p I don't mind the strategic stuff as I like trying something different.

I have been playing and reviewing this game for some days now, do you have any questions?

How linear is it? Are there any branching paths?

Back up a sec. EU? PS3? Physical release? Somehow I missed basically everything about this game. Looks like something I'd buy out of principle, but I'll check out a video or two when I'm home from work just to make sure.

I've bought this game because is really cheap in the Brazilian PSN(R$ 65.00, ~U$20.00). Playing the first chapter(or track as they call in game). I've been finding the game somehow confusing. Like they don't explain the emotion system at all in the game I had to read this thread to finally understand it(it is simple, but without any instruction I find it odd). Another thing I had problem was the forecast system in the strategy I won the battle in a try and error basis cause I didn't understand . I will need to practice to get.

And finally my last complaint ins the font size is really SMALL. I mean, I'm finding really difficult to read some sections of the game

I can't comment any more because, as I said, I've played only the first chapter. However I think I can answer this question:

How much voice acting is there?

The voice acting reminds of Fire Emblem, a few important sentences with full voice acting, but in general only grunts and few words in the visual novel sections.

Edit: Forgot to mention, so far the OST is really good.

First time seeing anything aboutthis game. Sounds interesting. Even if some impressions are not super positive it still looks lime my kind of jam, and the character animations in th vn parts look great.
Will give it a chance in the distant future when it releases in europe and its cheaper. Theres too many games and real lofe work time right now.

This I actually don't know since I am at my first play though but I'm starting to feel that choices are not that important except from some minor things. Happened a couple of Times to replay some moments changing inputs and it played out the Same. Can't say if it will happen later in the game (ch. 5)

How much voice acting is there?

Almost none of it and it's my biggest complaint with the game.
Tracks are good but very few in Numbers.

I had preordered it because it seemed like a different game from what I could watch on that 40 minute video. I cancelled the preorder, it doesn't look like a game for me. Also, the fact that the text is barely readable on the PSVita isn't particularly enticing.

For those disappointed that this is not a pure visual novel, we're getting Steins;Gate for the Vita and PS3 soon, maybe as soon as next month.

The main story text (at least in the PS3 version) is nice, big, and readable, but a lot of the text that gives extra information is really tiny.

How linear is it? Are there any branching paths?

There are extra scenes in each chapter that you can discover by doing things a certain way, like by licking or listening to something when the prompt comes up. I triggered one for the first chapter on my second playthrough (there's a Newgame+) and it added a lot to a story that wasn't as interesting the first time around. I think there are multiple endings too, but i'm not sure.

The battle really aren't difficult once you get the hang of it, but again, there is a small learning curve. The system is pretty simple and really open to at least a couple different ways of playing once you get it down though.

I think the hardest thing to get used to is the interaction with the sensory-emotion system. NISA's page does a much better job of explaining it than anything in-game or in the instructions where they didn't explain it at all: http://www.nisamerica.com/games/tokyotwilightghosthunters/system/index.html

I figured it out just by experimenting in game, but i was halfway through the game before i felt like i had a real handle on it. It's confusing, but it's also constant discovery and it's cool when you figure out what it's trying to do. Buuuut i'm not sure that was intentionally designed that way. The PS2 game Kowloon Youma Gakuenki (which Imai directed and wrote before this one) seems to use a similar method of interaction and maybe they expected people to play it first.

This came out during an unfortunately busy time for video games, but it'll be a shame if it's completely looked over.
"Better made" is pretty subjective in this case. It's a mess, but the presentation is slick and it feels like a complete game, just that they could've done a lot more with it if they'd had the time. I'm not saying this game is really good, but it is really interesting, and of course that's not going to be the case for everyone either.

While I am interested in this game I am even more interested in S;G on my Vita. I hope you are right about next month.

I was just looking and it turns out the game isn't on EU PSN? I even followed the link on the blog post and got an error.

Could be region specific but it doesn't say anything on the blog (then again there's no mention of the Vita version either...).

Edit: I might have derped - comes out tomorrow, but I thought it'd at least show up on the store since there was no mention of it on the blog.

Watched a video after my last post, ordered the PS3 version (EU) yesterday. Looks interesting to say the least. Probably won't get around to playing it until 2020 though.

Well, it IS bluemaxima.

I love this game. Although I really do prefer gameplay mixed in with visual novels. I'm not sure I ever played a pure visual novel.

Psyched to get this game, this is one of those weird Japanese releases that I can hardly find any information about and most of my hype is just from curiosity. I like the genre and the art style though, so I think I'll like it. Don't know how I'll find time to play it between Monster Hunter and Majora's Mask, though.

Picked this up last night. So far I am impressed with the visuals. The way the characters are animated is delightful.

The first chapter is terrible as far as tutorials go. It gives no information about how the interactions work so that was some disappointing trial and error.

The battle didn't make much of an impression on me aside from an interesting visual flair.

Now I'm in the second chapter and I'm enjoying the story. Currently I have been sidetracked by the board game mini-game which is driving me crazy. In the board game, does anyone know if you only attack the square you are on or can you pick an adjacent square to attack? I have managed to attack a ghost once out of three games and I keep losing to the other characters...

If anyone has the Vita version, can you take a non spoilery screenshot of some of the very small text and post it here? I'd like to view the screenshot on my own Vita to get a better idea of how the text will look on my system.

So far what I've heard hasn't turned me off if the game, but the small text is slightly concerning. I'd just like to judge it for myself. I recently learned I'm near sighted, and need glasses for night driving and reading, so I'm not looking to strain my eyes as much before I can get my new glasses.

Look at 2:10. The guy playing this states "can you read this? Because I can't".

I know it's not a screenshot, but maybe it helps.

Got GS' only copy. I really shouldn't get another game on the PS3 backlog, especially since I was almost done with Human Revolution, but I'll just dive in.

(Lightning Returns was down to $20. I resisted.)

I picked this up recently because I thought it looked interesting, and the game has been decently fun so far. You can't choose the stats upon leveling of any character other than the main, and while that isn't terrible I just wish start getting more points into int so they would get more actions per turn. Every single 90 degree turn costs a point, every move forward costs a point, jumping sideways costs 3 points, and jumping straight back costs 5. I can't even afford to move backwards with some characters, who right now only have 4 AP. You really need to make the most of every movement in this game it seems.

Really though the game does not seem to hard so far, placing copious amounts of salt to box in the ghosts seems to help a lot. Each placement of only costs 110 yen, which is absolutely nothing in the end, especially since you get a bonus 1000 yen for placing tons of salt down. I don't know if this strategy will last however, as this salt is only effective on ghosts up to level 15 and the improved salt costs over 10x the cost of the cheap stuff.

I just wish I knew what triggers the 6th sense at the end of each episode. Is it making the right dialogue choices? Is it related to the battle? I have been trying to figure it out but I am still not sure.

No joke about the music, it's fantastic.

Surreal to see VNs in English to this day. Come on, Umineko, if there ever was a time, this is it.

Most people thought it was, but it isn't. It's not like XBlaze, which is a pure visual novel. This is a mixture from visual novel with RTS. It's not even a visual novel with gameplay, it's a mix between the two genres.
Well, that's unnecessary. I don't find the game appeasing after watching more gameplay videos. I think I'm gonna just skip on this one.

Nah, I won't miss the cicadas. They can bring over the new version, though, sure.

Aksys failed to bring their two most-requested titles: Fate/Extra CCC and Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I'm done asking for these games, they've become a pipe dream for me.

How Aksys operates is a mystery to everyone. I asked about it at Evo, and they were like 'yeah, we know...'

Funny, Atlus were a lot nicer to me about EP and the many games we missed from them. They were pretty straight-forward. Aksys were mum.

I know this isn't the right place, but just one last post: Aksys did worse than just stay mum, they teased those games, directly and indirectly, several times in the past.

Then it's safe to assume they planned to, and something fell through. I'm gonna guess Type-Moon wanted too much money.

As for Umineko, I have no idea. Ryukishi is incredibly nice.

PS3 version of Umineko or bust. I'd double dip for that in a HEARTBEAT.

The visual style is great, gives it a high-budget look(though I bet it's not).

Yeah the actual battles are definitely not high budget.

I'm up to chapter 5 and am enjoying it, but there was a big difficulty spike there (was ignoring requests but I might have to do them now).

Dude, don't be a dick. It has nothing to do about not wanting to use my brain and I'm sure that's the case for others. Before release, I was given the impression that it was a visual novel first and foremost with a lighter emphasis on strategy.

Yeah, the end of Chapter 5 is kicking my ass. I just can't anticipate how these ghosts are supposed to move. Plus the boss just does so much damage. It's a great game, just a huge difficulty spike. I like the characters, and the premise is great.
