Affordable Space Adventures (Wii U) will ironically be not THAT affordable

It's due to arrive on April 9th, and KnapNok Games has now informed us of the pricing for the title. It'll be at the high-end of the market in Europe and North America, costing $19.99 / €18.99 / £16.99 at launch; importantly, it's also confirmed that we shouldn't expect any discounts until at least Fall.

Dajana Dimovska, CEO of KnapNok Games, has said the following.

Setting a price has been tricky for us. There is a lot of great games on the eShop selling for around $15, but they are either ports from other platforms, or games that could be easily ported to other platforms at a later date. Affordable Space Adventures is uniquely designed specifically for the Wii U system and the GamePad, we have to earn all our revenue in the eShop.

There is such a great community surrounding the Wii U and people are super excited whenever a good game is coming to the platform; I am sure that people are willing to pay a few extra bucks to get a game that has been tailor made for the hardware.

We are pretty certain that this game will not see a price drop or a discount at least until after the summer. We totally understand that some people have a limited budget for games. If these people are willing to wait and buy the game in the fall, to save some dollars, we are cool with that. I just can't promise anything about when or how much. The only thing I can promise is that the game will stay full price during this spring and summer.

I'll still be there day-1. That game is hypesauce.

UPDATE:
While we're at it, NOE did an interview with KnapNok and Nifflas about the game a few days ago:
NoE: Or if you are on the same level, “I’m the captain now,” and then you can take turns that way.

DD: Exactly.

Nifflas: I would definitely say that the engineer, who uses the GamePad, has the most difficult job.

DD: Especially because that player has a lot of information that’s hidden from the other players, so they absolutely must talk and tell the others what’s going on. All the warnings are only visible in the ‘cockpit’ – they don’t show up on the TV screen. You really have to pay attention to the GamePad because that’s where all the information is, which is such a new approach. The GamePad is such an integral, indispensable part of the game, and we’re very proud of that part: that was a big idea, and a big part of the experience.

The content of the game dictates the price. From what I've seen it seems reasonable, so hopefully the end-product turns out well.

Their support of Wii U is admirable so I can't help but chip in. Gotta give em props for actually trying to make use of the GamePad.

That's okay, I can wait for the discount if the impression are good.

Honestly I find it difficult to buy digital titles beyond the price of £12, since I am stuck with the game if I don't like it.

That's quite a premium but I love what I've seen and they've spent a lot of extra time on this game so I'm open to the idea of this worth a full $20.

After buying Knytt Underground on sale for $6.50 I felt bad for not busing it a full price because I love it a ton, it's my type of game. Was planning to buy 1 to support the dev.

Conversely I held off buying Spin the Bottle on sale for $4.50 because I felt I should support a game that used the Gamepad so much by buying it full price. It was not worth $12 but something lower.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I'm hyped for this. It also conveniently arrives before the Club Nintendo digital downloads stars / survey registration cut off point.

What's wrong with that price? Its a top tier unique quality indie project that's being pushed by Nintendo themselves.

People need to get over this whole indie games should cost 10 bucks or less attitude.

I weep for the dystopian App store nightmare world we live in where $20 is considered too much to charge for a brand new video game.

20 dollars? Pfft fuck that.

I only pay a bunch for games if they're released on a disc and have commercials. Then you can count on me for like 160 dollars.

Came in expecting it to be priced at $70 or something.

Sometimes I hate the state of pricing in this industry.

Cool to see more indies targeting $20 when they feel it's a fit, really. Wish they were a bit less waffly on the "pretty sure it won't be discounted before the end of summer". Dan Adleman's piece on game price was much firmer about no sales for X months. I think it's important to establish that so people can buy in confidence.
What's wrong with that price?

Nothing, but Axiom Verge had a huge thread full of pissing and moaning at the same price

When $20 for a game is considered "not that affordable", I feel like the perceived value/devaluation of games might be becoming a problem. Nice to see some level heads here, and some devs knowing what their product is worth and sticking to it.

Since when is $20 not affordable? This is just like that awful Axiom Verge reaction all over again.

Haven't heard of this game, but am now pretty interested after reading about it. And I have some of that deluxe eshop credit still, so I might use it towards this.

Read the thread, nobody is complaining ;)

£17 isn't that much, it's cheaper than some DLC, I'm just going to spend the money I saved from not buying Order 1886 and BF Hardline.

That's pretty affordable. I'm still very interested, though my main Wii U-playing buddy moved away, so I'm curious about how it holds up in single-player.

In all, I really like that I don't pay $60 for Wii U games very often. Very happy to supplement the heavy-hitter releases with cheap, good indies and classics.

From what I've seen of the game it seems like a fair price. Don't see why it would be a problem.Been looking forward to picking this up for a while now.

Weird thread title, why is the game not affordable? Is it short? Are there negative impressions?

Should've been pretty obvious. The default price ceiling for digital-only games is $15. Anything higher is an exception. Plus the in-your-face irony of the title. Note how the title in no way shape or form says it's too expensive or anything silly like that.

The thread title implies there's a problem.

A problem? No, that's just how you choose to read it. If anything the title implies that it deviates from the norm a bit. That's all.

Digital distribution is devaluing games. I saw a lot of people even here on GAF balk at $20 for the newest Shantae on 3DS, which blows away many retail titles in art and gameplay - including the original Shantae which was a full price $30 GBC game.

Print it on a disc and I'll pay $20 (or more) for it, but as a valueless digital item that works on only one console? No way.
