Honestly what did you expect?
This forum is full of people complaining about things, so you decided to come try and defend your creation?

Not in this town

+++ This sounds like some pretentious neckbeard fantasy. +++

Nah. I'm 61. At my age, it's the spiky white nose hair problem I have to deal with.

+++ Like you through everything +++

Nah. I threw in the stuff I was interested in. I started programming on Trash Ones, so I'm interested in quantum computing and programming.

I programmed in TurboProlog and Lisp and sat in movie theaters and got contact highs from 2001 while everyone grokked Hal 9000. So I'm interested in AI.

I've always been interested in physics, so I threw that in.

My best friend's daughter was into manga. One day, I went to some manga sites and got interested in that.

I cannot believe that the US abandoned the SSC and that the Euros are kicking our ass on the most advanced scientific work in the world. So I set the novel in Waxahachie, for most of the first book.

Everyone is interested in VR.

I've worked in high tech for a long time and have some ideas on what's happening now and how it will be play out in the future.

It's all stuff I'm interested in.

Nope. If people want to ask me about the book and why I wrote what I wrote, glad to tell them.

If they loathe it and believe it's a threat to all humanity, certainly their right!

I tried that. I can see there's some sort of threading in this system, but it's yet another Interface from Hell that has its own quirks and eccentricities and is hard to figure out unless you're a member of the internal cognoscenti who inevitably sneer at the newbie becuz they don't grok the system.

Sigh. I go to your post. I hit quote. It sticks a bunch of light HTML in the body of the message. Not in the title. What am I missing?

You just type beneath the "light HTML" in the box and post. That produces basically what I've done here

Rick hits the fabulous, incredibly intuitive "Quote" button. Heaven forbid it should say something like "Reply" or "Answer." Words that ACTUALLY have meaning in the context of what's going on.

Rick sees HTML in the BODY of the reply. The "Message" field is blank.

Rick does the logical thing and hits "Preview." The system tells Rick his title is too short.

Rick realizes he's in interface Hell. Rick knows all about interface Hell. Rick was once the product manager of WordStar.

Your advice and assistance greatly appreciated.

Rick is certainly comfortable with using his name and the fact that he is the author of the book under discussion as SEO bait. He expects his 15 minutes of fame.

You don't actually have to make a title for a post when you quote someone. After you click on quote, just type your reply under where the person you are quoting's original text is. You can't just quote someone without actually responding to them.

Hey Rick,
You seem like a cool person. But you really should stop ending your posts with your name, book title and website. It's somewhat spammy.

Be careful with the power of author-summoning. My sister recently started reading Don Quixote and last week Cervantes unearthed himself from his hidden tomb beneath a monastery.

She should never have tweeted angrily about it I guess

brb making a lolita thread

surely Nabakov can understand rudimentary bbcode! or at least write an orgasmic passage deriding it.

Sorry, but I won't do that. I am not a handle and don't want people to think or refer to myself as such. The name I normally respond to is Rick Chapman. Not "Jonnax" or "Viking110" or whatever. I can't even imagine why people would expect me, or anyone else, to do this. Rather dehumanizing. And I don't want people to have to hit two clicks to know who they're talking to. In this thread, when you talk to me, you are talking to Rick Chapman, author of Rule-Set.

Of course, if you LIKE being referred to via a handle, that's fine by me! I just don't.

If there is a specific policy which lays out how I can end my posts, please point it out to me. I've received at least one post from someone that had their name, pub, link. I rather like that. If I want to know more, it's easy to get to.

If there's some sort of community banning procedure, I fully understand and feel free to ban me. YOUR community!

Does THIS work?

Suddenly, I'm afraid of a future where I won't know who "rick" is anymore!

Rick! Don't stop signing your posts! These other fine posters are lying to you! The longer sig the better!

Yep, that worked. Incredibly bad interface design. How is anyone expected to figure that out? No hints, no text in the message that says something like "Type reply here."

It's almost as if it were designed to be inaccessible. Hmmm. Might be!

Actually, I have seen many situations where flamewars broke out where people began spoofing other people. Asking people to sign tended to stop that. I'm a bit interested in the mindset that doesn't like people using their actual names. It's an interesting social trend I don't think I've thought about enough. Why do you think me using my name is "spamming?"

Mike, I'm both self published and formally published. Both are TOUGH work and I'm still learning about self-publishing. If you want, feel fee to give me a call at [removed] sometime and I'll be glad to talk.

I'm glad you asked, Richard!

If an author has to explain to his audience how good, how believable, how well thought out his world is, he has failed as an author.

Rich what made you switch from Published to self published? Issues with the publisher? Or did you just want to try it your own way? Money?

Yeah Rich, you might want to edit that out!

I appreciate your concern, but my number is up on several locations on the web. I believe in trying to actually talk to people from time to time. Believe me, I know all about the spoofs and nonsense. But my offer to Mike stands. If he tries to sell me real estate in Romania, I'll hang up on him.

Thank you Rich, I might take you up on it later, but I don't have a way to call international at the moment (I'm in Canada!)

But if you ever get a call from me I promise not to sell you too much real estate.

Your fan, Mike.
