Basically, just saying. I goggled this before calling them. They don't care about the ps4 connection of course. They only care about the PC hardline connection.

I'm in Texas (Houston area) and Fios or anything better than Comcast isn't available. I did a quick search and tried the primary/secondary DNS settings. They did not make a difference at all.

Is there anything else I can do to receive a better "test connection speed" result on the ps4? I do not see how this is/could be limited by the PSN. Just seems to be some kind of hardware or software limitation.


Although I realize I may be lttp, I am kinda hoping there is some kinda fix that GAF knows that my 5-second goggle search did not turn up.

When you ran your test on PC, did you pick a server that is close to the city where the PSN servers are located? If your PC is running a speed test to a server nearby while the PS4 is not, that taints the numbers a bit doesn't it? Also 40-59 Mbps is pretty fucking good btw.

FWIW, I have a 1gb/1gb fiber optic line, but I max out at about 150-200 mbps. I've never been able to get my full speed. PC, I can max out easy, but PS4 seems to be a problem with servers.

I have other issues in this big house to fix for my wireless, but the glaring issue with my ps4 which has always been hardwired was not so obvious until today when I looked my an idiot talking to Comcast because I blindly gave faith to my ps4 having a good test on my connection as opposed to having a computer going through speedtest.net.

I have my PS4 in the same room as my router, it slow.

Connected directly with a Ethernet to my router after getting a 20ft cable, slow still, while Steam takes good download speeds of my 50meg line.

It's got to be PSN servers.

What are you talking about? Both Shaw and Telus have packages in excess of the OPs results.

And OP:

A) Its the PSN servers, I routinely see results well below what any other device tests at on the home.

B) You are only ever going to get data as fast as it's served to you, from a gaming standpoint there's unlikely to be a discernable difference in usage between the results you're seeing vs what you feel you should be getting.

Nothing you can do. I downloaded Home A Unique Horror Adventure earlier and it took 3 minutes to download the 52MB file on a 115mbps connection. It's becoming a major issue and I'm about to stop buying digital games if Sony doesn't do something about it.
The speed test doesn't mean much considering I usually get 90-100mbps down when I test but get far lower when downloading.

I have a wired homeplug set up for my PS4 and it test around 30-40 Mbps which isn't bad but my downloads never seem to be anything close to that. Pausing and restarting the download sometimes works though. Even when I re-test download speeds it can go <10 Mbps. Not sure what is up with the servers. Hate that I can't take advantage of my top speeds though

Well speedtest.net is pretty good you know, we've been using that site for nearly 15 years.


As for PS4. Did I miss something? It dumbs it down for you.. I only did "test connection speed" and got my result. Never saw higher than 58/59. Mbps.

I tend to avoid everything digital because download rates are super fucking slow for me. It's even worse because a games also do ingame patching which means you can't even let the console run in rest mode. I know enough people that have their console on (and blocked) for days because they wanted to download Destiny/FF14 ...

Well, it's PSN, not just the PS4. I have had the same behavior on the PS3 and Vita.

I'm saying specifically go into speed test and CHOOSE a server that is the same geographic location as where the PSN servers reside and NOT to let speed test choose the default nearest server. That way you get an accurate comparison of like-for-like pathway from source to destination.

In other words, I'm quite sure my speed test default to a server in San Diego is going to be faster than testing a server in New York. Test to the city where PSN resides. I don't know where that is, but you are obviously wanting an accurate accounting of speed difference and this is the only way it will be accurate.

Well, you're right, I did not go to the trouble of testing a PSN server, where ever it resides.

I'm not sure how else to respond to this, but since the PS4 has a "test connection speed" option, I kind of assume that they expect their average consumer to use this as a gauge to what their console is getting for speeds.

The speedtest testing server is not on the PSN CDN so this is not really going to prove much.

The speedtest testing server is not on the PSN CDN so this is not really going to prove much.

Are speeds equal no matter what server you choose? If I choose a server in New York, you're saying it will have equal speed as the server here in SD? Yeah you can't test to PSN server but you can test the pathway to the geographic location. If I'm wrong and you can get full 85mbps no matter what server you choose, then disregard.

Edit - I just ran speed test to Boston and I got 1/3 the speed of my speed test to San Diego.

So you get 40-60mbps on PS4 (about 2/3 of your max speed). I only have a 20Mb (roughly 2.3Mb/s) connection but it's downloading right now at about 600Kbps for the past 3 hours. I'm pretty jealous. I wish I got 2/3's of my connection speed on PSN.

Nah man. Not a brag thread at all.


I know it varies by area. I lived in Southern Alabama where the cable modem and dsl connection speeds were advertised capped at 10 Mbps and that was amazing.

I also lived in the panhandle of Florida (Pensacola area) where they had extremely fast cable modem service (Cox Cable) and even Verizon Fios.


I would not have made this thread if my PC did not double my PS4. I was kinda hoping someone would have said "oh ya, change x and y, and you'll get results similar to a PC OP" but that didn't happen unfortunately.


A quick goggle search shows something about primary and second DNS being 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but I made those changed, and received no benefit. One would expect being in the Houston area, that I would/should have some insane download numbers.


Again, no brag thread. In fact, if anything, I need to go buy some expensive router so I can get decent numbers upstairs wireless.

I just ran speed test to multiple servers from where I live in San Diego. We have shitty DSL so my max speed is 20Mbps. When running speed test to a San Diego server that is what I get, 20 Mbps . When I run a speed test to Houston, I get 6.8 Mbps.

Speed test to San Francisco (where PSN is located) from SD got me 16mbps. So roughly 75% of my max speed.

It is a rare time that I get my full 120ish down from PSN. There isn't really anything you can do beside go wired to ensure you aren't facing any wireless limitations or issues.

Also don't get hung up on speed tests on the consoles. They can provide wildly different results and sometimes not even be close to what you are actually going to get. My Xbox One will show me 50ish but immediately download in the 90 range.

It's just going to tell you which links are saturated at certain times of the day. Assuming the PS4 (and Steam) have any kind of logic at all, they will disregard poorer links anyway. This is kind of the point of a CDN.

Its a PSN problem.
On my PC, which connects through wireless with a dongle, Steam usually downloads at 15-18 MB/s.
On my PS4, which connects through wire, It fluctuates between 250KB/s to 3-5 MB/s
