Pillars of Eternity |OT| You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
The "you get to be in the game!" thing probably didn't work out as everyone, both Obsidian and the backers, would've liked.

Finally got this jewel. Now, having never played the original Infinity Engine games (shame on me, I know), is this the kind of game where I need to get a PhD beforehand or I can just jump in and learn everything from within the game itself? Will I make crippling character decisions by going full blind?

Yep that's my main issue with chanters. They are amazing in like 5% of battles (bosses and some other harder enemies) but the other 95% of fights are over before they even get their first invocations.

You need to play on a harder difficulty. I'm on path of the damned and pretty much every fight takes forever XD

You'll be fine, just play the game. They tried to make it so that there's no "wrong" way to make a character.

Hmm, not fan of "rare vendors with rare item" system of Keep if they don't stick around for few days. I traveled to location X and got notification that there was person interested in selling rare item to me. I decided to check it out and traveled to my keep and it took 1+ days.

I went grounds through from top to bottom and no said vendor anywhere to be found.

What is the point with these special event vendors if they stick around for hour or two?

Those items are sold on Stronghold screen in the events section, not from an actual vendor in the keep. Yea, it's confusing :)

So i just lost all my saves. That or the loading button is bugged, because its shadowed like if I started the game for the first time.

I recommend watching some of the Beginners Guide videos mentioned in the OT. Maybe watch a class guide when you decide what class you want to play. You probably won't screw yourself if you go in blind but you should at the very least look PoE wiki to see what the attributes and skills do.

Is anyone here running this game on a Macbook with integrated graphics? I have an i5 2.6 with Intel Iris from mid-2014. Would that be sufficient to handle it? For reference, Divinity: Original Sin runs acceptably at low / medium settings.

I pretty much have the exact same macbook air as you. Let me install and figure out how it runs, and I'll let you know. So far I've just been streaming from my PC, but it'd be nice to have it on the go.

Edit: It seems to work acceptably, after turning of AA. It did crash once while I loaded the first area though, so YMMV in terms of tolerance for those types of things.

uh, first controversy regarding the game (outside the bugs):

What do I think? That they should've asked the backer to send a different text. Considering trans people a punchline isn't funny.

Not a fan of most of the gravestone bits if I'm honest. I get that it allows backers to be part of the game but some of them feel so out of place.

Wow, Durance has a lot of dialogue.

Heh I like his comment if you take him to the brothel.

Regarding those epitaph/memorials, I wonder what the heck people who don't realize they're from backers think.

Yeah, I just stopped reading them, they really take you out of the experience, like how people have paid money to take snipes at the devs' use of Unity over Unreal in Wasteland 2, I don't need that crap in my games, thanks.

I'm kind of surprised by the performance early on. With a GTX 770, a 4.20 GHz 3570k, and 8GB of memory, I'm getting drops to 50 FPS in the second map location in the game (
Vale wood
). From what I read the framerate gets a lot worse in
Gilded Vale
-- I wonder why? With the map size and 2D backgrounds I would think performance would be pretty good on this sort of system.

*edit* I got to that location (
Gilded Vale
), and performance is about the same, 45-60 varying, so at least it didn't get much worse.

I had perfect 60 fps performance on a GTX 970 until I got to Defiance Bay where it drops to 45 fps during daytime.

Speaking of the NeoGAF Inn, man that backer NPC with the creepy serial killer memory...

Yeah, that was creepy. If I find someone whose memory reveals that they are evil and they are isolated I attack them. Unfortunately you can't do that in the inn without turning everyone hostile. But, man, that guy has it coming...

I have read all so far and, bar one or two stories, they have been uninteresting compared to what the main game offers in terms of lore and story. I don't think people miss much by skipping them.

So far I've impressed by the quality of the stories. They are really good and go a long way toward fleshing out the world and making it feel populated with people with their own desires and agendas. I don't read them every time but it's still a really nice touch. Reminds me of the short stories in Lost Odyssey.

This game just proves the tragedy of Obsidian, they had that genius in them all this time but they were wasted as hired guns on rushed projects and compromised vision.
After this game, I swear that if they have another Kickstarter I'm doubling what I pledged for PoE.

After South Park (which had good critical notices and seems to have sold well) and now this, I'm hoping that major publishers will give Obsidian more attention. While I want Obsidian to keep a team on staff to turn out more games like PoE, I would love for them to be able to create other games as well.

Using the console adds a 2nd instance of that ability to the character sheet, in the wrong section (talents go under abilities) even. I wonder if that's even working correctly or if it will cause issues if patched.

I saw a recommendation to reset the character level to 0 and then re-level instead.

Ah that's too bad. I find it hard to continue and finish a CRPG based on much else aside from story and writing these days, honestly. I don't have any particular nostalgia for the mechanics so the feeling of adventure and discovery has to win me over. Still I'm interested though

There is a world of difference between "Does PoE have really good story and lore?" ( the answer is a resounding YES) and "Is PoE's story and lore just as good as the game widely considered to be the best written game of all time?"

If your standards are the latter then you are never going to be happy.

I like this game but I find having to micromanage every character every fight to be extremely tedious. I wish there was a game just like this, but like DAO where I could set tactics for the other party members I'm not controlling so I can macromanage instead.

I think they are probably better off at range using a blunderbuss or something because it gives them great focus gain to get off a bunch of spells. could probably work up front too but don't think I would use them as a tank, More like a rogue going after already engaged enemies.

Is a party of 5 ranged characters and
Eder
tanking feasible? I've got two wizards in my party so I suppose I could swap out
Aloth
for a melee character but I don't think I've gotten another one yet. I really wish
there was a Rogue companion in the game
. It would make the decision to drop the rogue adventurer I hired/created easier.

You really need at least an off tank. Lots of groups have too many enemies for one person to engage or the choke point is too wide for one character to clog.

Ciphers are just fine as a melee striker. Blunderbuss is nice too but they are perfectly acceptable in melee range too. That is how my cipher is built, and she's a beast. Just don't start her in range, let the tank engage and have her come in afterwards to wreck.

Switching off the cloud saves from every steam game that has them, thats for sure.

Probably using a cipher, ive heard they are pretty good.

What kind of weapon setup are you using for your Cipher? Should I be using sword & board for the additional deflection?

Also I'm a priest, but sometimes I see conversations come up like "eothas, not completed" when talking to people.

What does that mean? Who is Eothas? How do I complete some option when I only just got to the first town?

Kinda disappointed with Chanters, now that I have
Kana. Most battles are just too short to use their invocations, so they're just kind of a passive buff that sits there sniping.

Chanter tip
.. Kana is my groups heavy hitter now. As soon as you can get the Phantom summon from level, do so. This guy is a beast. No only does he hit hard but he has a chance to stun on hit and has ruined many an enemies entire afternoon. The proper name is But Reny Darets Ghost, He Would Not Rest. Get it, use it, love it.

The other thing to do with Kana is give him 3 firearms, one in each weapon set. Switch between them after firing so you get a 3 shot volley right near the start.

Another thing with Chanters that ive found incredibly helpful is at 5 you can get access to a phrase that gives x2 reload speed and 1.2 firing speed. So very good.

At first i thought all the followers were a bit weak. In just 1-2 levels of me guiding their abilities ive made all of them into relative powerhouses.

edit:
Just now made it to Act II. Save file says 17 hours.

Eothas is a god but I'm not sure what that message means. There is an abandoned temple to him in the first town maybe it refers to that.

Eothas is a god. If you are a priest that has Eothas as your deity there would be an option there for you to use.

I'm dual wielding right now, but I think any setup is potentially acceptable. I don't see much point in S&B because ideally your cipher isn't actually getting hit, they are just in to clean up while the tank engages.

It portrays a pseudo-medieval world and as such a lot of the sentiments expressed in-game wouldn't match up to 21st Century real life sensibilities.

Hmm. So I'm still in the first optional dungeon, and if I run low on HP I just go back to the inn, or even camp out on the dungeon floor without consequences. Makes the non-regenerating HP mechanic a bit pointless?

Fun game. Never finished BG1 and haven't played much of the other Infinity Engine things, but I'm really enjoying this.

Haha count me in for missing the
Raedric
fight as well. Never saw anything amounting to a quest line there, so I just noped along to Caed Nua.

At GAF land right now, but I guess I'll retrace my paths and see what I missed...(wanted to pick up the
druid
companion anyways and they're near where I need to travel back from).

Also: fuck Paladins. So boring. I was expecting them to be more like the Priest class...but yea, not all that much fun to play honestly, especially as a tank(Fighter/companion does it SOOOOO much better). It's not bad as an off-tank/damage dealer, but still, pretty miffed at the class.

That said, Priests are SOOOOOO much fun. I went and created an adventurer for my party built off of the old companion, Cadegund , that got cut from the game(well, more like changed into
Durance
...dafuq). Anyways, a heavy/plate wearing Priest, complete with a hammer + gun = badass. It's EVERYTHING I thought the Paladin class would be: up close melee'er with party spells. Everything about the Priest class just screams for it to be played close to the action(so many party buffs, heals, etc.). Highly recommended if you're not liking Paladin.

I have to say this game can be frustrating at times early on. I hate that it can be so difficult to control the movement of the enemies unless you "door" them or some other funneling tactic. Most enemies just B-Line straight to my wizard buddy and promptly destroy him while I hit (miss) it in the back. Perhaps this gets better with more party members but right now.....damn.

quick question for Pillar-GAF: out of lulz I used the AddToParty console command on the Bear in the first forest of the game... but I can't find how to remove him later and out of stupidity I have already saved.
Pls tell me I'm not fucked because he's pretty much... a beast ;)

Well at the first dungeon you are near relative safety and have a short walk to the inn and supplies. The harder the difficulty the less supplies you can take with you (6 for ez, 4 for normal, 2 for hard and Path of the Damned). The rest mechanic in PoE doesnt make it pointless. What happened in the IE games (also the NWN games) is that you could rest for 8 hours after almost every encounter fully recuperating both life and abilities which totally sapped most challenge out of the combat.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Maybe it's an issue of semantics. I can accept that it's highly magical, but PS:T is also highly magical (hell, it's more magical than PoE.) Since the poster implied he did not consider PS:T high fantasy, I assumed we're talking about high fantasy in the more limited specific sense. This is not exactly a run of the mill D&D fair. It really makes anything it uses its own. Rather than fill the world with goblins, you have the creepy wichts, rather than a simple tale of magic and good vs. evil you have a moral ambiguous grim world with horrifying soul magic.
Sure, it's a more familiar fantasy world than say PS:T, but I truly believe in the saying - A good design is 80% familiar and 20% crazy. This world follows this formula exactly and the result is amazing.

High fantasy and highly magical are not the same. Planscape is weird fantasy if it can even be classified. Its really more a whole bunch of different types of fantasy added together with a whole heap of philosphy and religion throw ontop plus any existing campaign setting at the time, since the prime material plane is also part of Planescape.

I think the real takeaway has to be that Obsidian, with their company on the line, couldnt risk getting too crazy with setting. They wanted a lot of familiar trappings to entice people who werent super fans that would back or buy anything Obsidian was gonna put out. Hopefully the expansion goes MotB on the setting, assuming the sales are good enough they feel safe to go way outside the box. Or at least BG2 crazy (though not in size, I prefer more compact stories and setting over spawling ones that tend to run in five different directions to no benefit).

Does the stronghold ever get populated? Right now it just has the handful of people I hire and still feels pretty much as dead as when I took over except with better maintained buildings.

Erm, how do I rest at my keep?

You need to do the construction project to restore the inn then go to the top floor of the inn and click on the bed in the room left of the stairs.

Great tip from Reddit that I don't think I've seen here:

if you press a key while hovering over a spell/ability icon then you hotkey that ability.

This also gives you a brand new row of Hotkeyed icons above the others so you can have all of your favorite spells lined up together.

quick tip, you can get to to act 2 on hard with lvl 4/almost level 5 in roughly three to three and a half hours if you "skip" through most of the dialogues (that you know by now anyhow, so just picked the same answers as last time) and enemy encounters

the way I did it:
always use fast mode when walking around a map; go straight to Gilded Valley and get the two companions; get the all quests, head north to the bear forest and complete the two quests there; go south to recruit Durance (always stay on the main path in wilderness areas to avoid enemies); go east, kill the bandits and retrieve the iron; go to Caed Nua and recruit Kana Rua - you can do the watcher quest now or later when you return, you only have to fight the two ghost groups and the spiders in the dungeon; head to the bridge, do the quest, then go to the Compass and finish the quest there; go back to Gilded Valley, turn in the quests; go down to the temple, straight to the bells, then to the hidden room on the second floor skipping everything else; walk through the forest in the east on the path; climb up the walls of the keep, kill the two guards, loot the monk outfits and put them on, open the secret entrance in the chapel and talk to the priest, go down the dungeon and free the prisoner (and kill the animancer if you want), go back to the priest and get the key, then face Raedric; go back to Caed Nua, then south to Woodend Plains to make Sagani join your party. From here you can either go to Defiance Bay to finish act 1 or to Dyrford Village.

you should obtain all the important items that way afaik and you only lose out on a bit of xp from opening and disarming traps and bestiary entries. You can do some optional stuff on the that would probably give you more reputation points
