I did suspect they would do something like a do-over when they established Whis time travel powers in the manga and the trailer had a shot of the earth being destroyed.
I mean... he hasn't needed to since he got that power up in the Buu saga but it's always been possible.

He turns SSJ in this movie. That's actually why people thought he was going to be super weak, since he shouldn't need SSJ anymore, but he has quotes here implying that it'd be some kind of power up for him. So, people were assuming that he'd be back to pre-SSJ2 levels.
I'm sorry, but this shit genuinely confounds me. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of process and mental gymnastics it must have taken to arrive at such a mind-boggling stupid plot.

My problem is that is just sounds like one of the original 13 movies, Goku comes back from the brink to one shot the villain. I was hoping for something better.
Everyone else is protecting Earth from Freeza's 1,000 soldiers and Vegeta fights Freeza while Goku is down.

It's a fucking shame Vegeta got robbed, though. I hope there's at least a moment where Vegeta is holding back the death ball from Earth, or whatever Frieza uses to destroy the planet. If he goes out like Bardock, holy shit.

Well Vegeta is wining in this movie but Freeza does a cheap thing by blowing up the planet, Goku saves the day with time travel. Works fine I guess.
The thing I like is that is sounds like they might be continuing on the path that Vegeta is stronger than Goku that they started in BoG. Maybe this was a way to ease people into that and Vegeta will get the next baddie.

Not happy on one hand that Goku won again, happy on the other hand that Vegeta was getting shit done unlike Goku. Toriyama is a lost cause at this point, to basically have the storyline where Vegeta and seemingly Gohan are more than capable of taking out the big boys but once again Goku comes in.

So Vegeta doesn't win but he does get a big power boost. Eh, bout as much as we're gonna get with Toriyama.
If they REALLY focus on this in the movie, then I think it will be great. It kinds of fits Vegeta's character to get robbed. I just hope they focus on the fact that he actually did well.

Thinking about it, the storyline is beyond cheap. I really would love to know what is going on in Toriyamas head, from the little we know Vegeta is beating Freiza so chances are a lot of the movie will focus on that, Goku is fucked to the point he needs a senzu and Gohan is also taking care of things. It's like Toriyama himself wants to move on from Goku but is terrified of the backlash if someone else is the hero, was the backlash pretty bad when Toriyama said he wanted to ditch Goku and make Gohan the lead character? It's a bit late in the game for things to change now but jeeeeeeezaz.
At least Vegeta was not totally useless for once so that's nice.
