New SHADOW OF THE BEAST (PS4) concept art; details

So, any guesses as to genre? Personally I think this will be a 2.5 action platformer/brawler. It would be amazing if they can make it a third person action-combat-adventure, but I think that sounds a little too ambitious for a small studio. I can't see from their website how many staff there are, so I'll assume TheHollowNight is on point in suggesting ~10 permanent staff. I'm hoping that amazing art is able to be realised and that it has great production levels, on the same level as ThatGameCompany or Housemarque games.

I really love the original two games, and I'd be ecstatic if they can do a faithful modernisation while keeping the amazing art and atmosphere intact. Hopefully they can keep the original soundtrack, or at least elements of the same eerie woodwind soundtrack, but I know a different guy is scoring this and not David Whittaker (fake edit - I remember seeing it mentioned somewhere but cannot find it now).

I adore that art in the OP. Just been reading over this topic and taking a close look at the images, and I feel so optimistic for this game. Please don't mess it up, Heavy Spectrum.

I still listen to the music of the first version once in a while. I hope they manage to create a similar atmosphere like in the 90s!

Girl I follow from xdev said its being shown at the PSN showcase today, so assume that this will be a smaller downloadable title.

I felt that was obvious but I saw a lot of people expecting a big budget, or at least Middle-tier title.

Nothing wrong with that. Today's downloadable is yesterday Mid tier.

Oh shit, this is awesome. I've been scratching for details on this recently; wanted to bump this very topic but I didn't have anything new to say so I didn't want to seem spammy.

Saw mentions of it being shown today on Twitter, very nice to see some photos in here too.

Really looking forward to his game, even though i never finished it as a kid i loved the original on my C64.

I hope you mean the Amiga version... because the C64 version is not that good..

the amiga version got released in 1989.. and the C64 in 1991

for a C64 game it was nice.. but it pales in comparison to the amiga version.

this game is super confusing to me. Sony wont reveal horizon, bend's game etc and all these AAA games before time (even bloodborne took a while to be revealed) but they will reveal this small team game 2 years back almost with no follow up? And its not even something like every comes to rapture which is essentially a 3rd party being supported... the reveal and almost complete blackout on this game since makes zero sense given sony's recent exclusive approach.

Sony plays fast and loose with digital game reveals.

What Remains of Edith Finch & Wattam were two 'small-team' games announced at PSX where Sony was like "LOL, THIS AIN'T COMING IN 2015, CAN'T TELL YOU MUCH MORE, SEE YOU LATER."

hmm, well thats stupid non-aaa games have a hard enough time retaining mindshare ... if anything they should have the shorter reveal/hype/release cycle.

I did exactly the same thing with the music. I really hope the soundtrack on the new one has a similar vibe, or at the very least has throwbacks to the original.

I think they've been trying to get away from revealing major retail games too far in advance this gen (possibly because of Driveclub's one year delay), but they still do it a lot with smaller digital games, and I do find it kind of infuriating. Helldivers as a recent example; I know I've read somewhere that it was in development for just under two years, and given it released in March 2015 and was first shown at Gamescom in August 2013, which means it was at most 6 months into development when they showed it. Similarly, it's been more than 18 months since Rime was first revealed and we still only have a nebulous '2015' date on that one. I think these games look terrific, but if it's more than 12 months away then I don't want to know about it.

I guess those control bindings confirm some sort of action game and removes the possibility they're following from the style of the third game. Still, hopefully they can capture the art style and atmosphere.

It definitely looks like it's a 2D (as in sidescrolling as opposed to third person) action game (the movement controls mention just left/right for movement and up/down for climbing).

The HUD on the right though looks very clean and modern, feels out of place to me. But then again, we haven't seen any actual gameplay, so it's too early to judge really. I'm fearing for another Flashback (remake), I'm keeping my expectations low.

Not that the original first Shadow of the Beast was an exceptionally good or deep game, but that doesn't mean the reboot can't be one.

EDIT:

Oh sweet, gameplay pics, thanks Hanmik!

I think the rationale with it is that with digital games, it can afford to 'vanish' for long periods of time and no one in the gaming press would care to annoy Sony about it.

Nobody at IGN or Gamespot are ranting about how Rime was revealed too early. Everyone's busy making joke videos of The Last Guardian.

On the other hand, retail AAA games make them thirsty, and even a week's delay for a AAA game will generate 30 million articles crying about how games are blahblahblah.

So it's a 2.5D action game, as expected. Hopefully there will be lots of exploration and an amazing atmosphere. And some footage later this week when the embargo lifts!

PERFECT

will be able to pay sufficient homage to the original titles while making it look great in that perspective.

liking what I'm seeing so far
