New Halo 5 teaser - Spartan Locke armor set

How many reasons can they realistically give you before the character gets to star in their first game? Maybe let Halo 5 happen, and then start to judge the character. Maybe "because of reasons" will make more sense then?
Oh, I'm sure there'll be much more substance to him in the game, I guess I'm just a little put off with how hard they've been pushing him so far from launch with almost nothing to go on in terms of motivation. They seem to be treating him like it's a foregone conclusion that we should care about him, but it doesn't feel earned.

wow the camera was all over the place and then that voice completely takes you out of it.

animation1pwjql.gif

last shot is one of the better ones. that planet looks cool.

Eh, not really feeling it. Looks lore like a new Crysis or something than Halo to me.

343's strategy with Locke seems to basically "he's Palmer, but we're going to go way out of our way to show you that he's The Cool New Guy before the game comes out so you're not so hostile when we replace the Chief with him." Which I'll admit is an improvement, but they still haven't given much in the way of reasons to care about him other that he's a Badass hunting the Chief because of Reasons. I don't really see what part of that could cause people to declare themselves #teamLocke, but more power to ya I guess.

yep they're forcing all these no-names into the brand and expect us to invest ourselves in them. palmer had potential but that wasn't handled very well. i don't imagine locke will be much different.

I'm getting vibes that this isn't actually showing you the campaign but perhaps another mode to play in parts of it like Missions (Spec Ops/Spartan Ops).
You play as any other Spartan using a class suitable for the mission. Maybe idk. This trailer didn't specify whether the Spartan Locke armor set is exclusively to MP. And you don't hear Locke's voice in the pre - rendered scene. There's no clear objective either other than you're hunting for prey. So could be a new horde mode/Spartan Ops mode perhaps?

Well, I mean... If he is a very important character in Halo 5 (whether the fans like him or not), then they don't really have any choice but to make that apparent prior to the game's release. Would you rather they pull a Raiden on everyone?

Yeah I would, honestly. Either pull a Raiden (or an Arbiter, who was completely Raidened into Halo 2 yet remains nearly universally well-liked), or tell us something about him to indicate why we should care.

unfortunately, without locke as the face of the halo 5 hype machine, 343 wouldn't really have anything to show.

The Arbiter is a good character with fantastic voice acting. So far, the voice acting for Locke from Mike Colter has been so-so but hopefully the direction is better for the game.

Hahaha, it feels like Gamestop pulled the trigger on their ad before Microsoft could unveil the real trailer...

Eh, watching my Twitter feed this morning, it looks like it was intended to be a teaser of something bigger, even with the shit GameStop guy. I am expecting a full trailer before E3 with gameplay and a massive multiplayer trailer at the E3 conference.

Probably live campaign demo on stage too

To be honest the Arbiter didn't have enough of the players time to really count as a Raiden situation. He was closer to Snake's MGS2 role if anything (just not placed at the start). Locke seems like he'll be having far more of the player's time (to the point where his actor stated that he was playing the main character). I don't think letting people expect to be playing exclusively as Chief, and then having Locke take up half (or more) of the campaign is a fair move to pull on your customers. Chief is already established, so he doesn't need this screentime (and for story reasons they probably can't even give it). I don't see anything wrong with how they've approached things so far.

Yeah, something else has to happen. The cut of this makes it look very amateur-ish. Can't believe they let that be the first look at Halo 5!

Yea something like how with the new abilities, encounters become more dynamic with them showing off some 5v1 of Locke versus the non-Arbiter following Elites.

Well to be fair, we have seen tidbits here and there with the prologue and epilogue videos in MCC and we had the beta. This is the first time we've seen a campaign focused video with full use of all the new gameplay abilities like the thrusters, ground pound and clamber and the cuts do make it a little jarring. It sure was exciting as hell though.

It was also mentioned earlier but Locke has 14 grenades which is super strange.

Hunt the Truth is the lead up material to E3, from there on I expect campaign and MP info and footage blowouts as well as a playable BTB (non competitive arena based) environment beta. The first beta was fairly well received and they made a good number of changes due to it, they should to the same for other parts of the game.

For every "WHY IS SPARTAN SUPER SAND?!11!"

This should be required viewing material

That's just a small taste are what Spartans are supposed to be classically capable of. With new armor systems, their abilities are raised even further.

I mean, that's a much, much more accurate and appropriate depiction of my understanding of what Spartans are than this new trailer is, but fuck, these are Ultra Super Future Human Spartans, so I'm willing to give it a pass. I just hope they don't go overboard. Much of what made the Spartans mysterious and interesting is already gone. I'm not sure how I'd feel having them go full on Batman on everybody's asses. I felt the same way about the new Deus Ex trailer for the record. Too much FUCKING RADICAL ACTION BRO everywhere for my tastes.

When was the last graphically impressive game in 1080p on Xbox One?
That's right... never.

Yeah, of course. Let's just pretend Forza M. 5 and Forza H. 2 never happened, right?

About the leak, I'm still not sure if that's in-game quality! But I really liked it! The Gamestop guy kind screw the impact though.
But for a Gamestop pre-order bonus, that was already big enough, I hope we can see some campaing gameplay trailer soon!

Kind of like a Spartan is supposed to be.

I did not know that. In which case the problem is that there has been six games showing the Spartans to be decidedly unlike this. I've never read the books and I'm sure the majority of Halo consumers haven't either, so how do they reconcile Locke all of a sudden being like something out of a Marvel film?

Forza 5 doesnt look that good...

And its not ingame or inengine. Its a CGI trailer made by some company.

Looks neat, although I'm skeptical of the desctructible environments mechanic, if that is even a thing.

This is how Spartans are meant to be like. Bungie should have done this years ago.

(or an Arbiter, who was completely Raidened into Halo 2 yet remains nearly universally well-liked)

I take it you weren't around in 2004.

Sure, he's universally well-liked now. Back when Halo 2 was just released, it was the biggest shit-storm since, well, Raiden.

Did we know about the arbiter before launch? plus his background or something else that made us care?

I cant understand all the attempts to hate everything about the game.

Perhaps his armour is based on forerunner tech?

This isn't gameplay footage, it's a CG teaser. Just as previous books/film showed the Spartans doing things not featured in gameplay (running at over 100km/hr, knocking out brutes with single kicks, punching missiles out of the air etc...), this ad shows exaggerated/more impressive versions of the new thruster pack gameplay mechanics we've already seen in the beta (charge, hover, clamber, donkey kong ground smash, etc...).

If it were in game or engine MS woulda said so I bet.

Looked neat.

They didn't say until asked after that the multiplayer beta trailer was in-engine.

John was recorded running at 65+ mph during a training exercise and a reaction time fast enough to dodge rockets shot at him.

Forza 5 doesnt look that good...

Forza 5 actually does look good.

It's a shame Bungie/343 didn't go farther in exploring more aspects of Chief/Blue Team/Spartan II's through more stuff like Halo Legends or a mini series (I know there was The Package, but wish there was more). I see a lot of people swooning over Locke's little acrobatic display when it pales in comparison to their insane feats.

Yeah, good point. I kind of assumed this would be representative of the gameplay, but if anything I guess it'll be similar to Halo 4 with a bit more speed and mobility.

I've no problem with any of that, to be honest - it's the enemy designs (hated the Prometheans) and objective designs (hated having to press three of everything) which I disliked most about Halo 4.

looks like awful 343 Covenant design will return

Their new designs look like straight out of Gears of War. I really hope they are a different species, like some people say. I never saw 343i confirming that, but the Elites in the two Halo 5 cutscene (which are included in the MCC) look more like the classic Elites.

I thought Prometheans were really bad designs, from a visual and from a gameplay perspective.

Kill Crawlers -> Kill Watchers -> Kill Knights.

The only time they were fun to fight was when they fought side to side with the Covenant. That mixed up the battle and you couldn't engage them the same way.

Also, I really HATE Watchers. They shoot you spinning arround in the air, but when you shoot them, they suddenly get scared and hide behind obstacles for a minute. That's so freaking annoying, especially since they can fly and you can't aim at them in certain angles...

You want an even better example of their skill? Here watch this: https://youtu.be/Bglzosd3QPU?t=385

Its a freaking ad, of course everything is more over the top. Spartans are only mysterious based on their upbringing. When it comes to the battle they are super soldiers in every definition of the term. Agile, fast, strong.

The Covenant designs, especially the Elites remind me more of Doom.
