Project CARS 2 confirmed

New news, new thread.

This had been confirmed on the WMD forums but Pretend Race Cars Blog has leaked the information.

A very short update for now as I’m jet-lagged to hell and back but the good news is that we will be continuing the WMD setup for pCARS2.
We will open new forum sections when the game (pCARS1) ships to support the new users and you WMD experts will all have access and we’d greatly appreciate your assistance advising new users.

I’ll be implementing a new non-profit return form of WMD for pCARS2 (to avoid the FSA hassle) and will set a purchase time limit of 2-3 months for those who want to take part. Following this, involvement will be closed. The tiers won’t have the higher cost options that we currently have (probably capped at 100 pounds with excellent benefits) and those who want to approach me personally to invest in the new game can do so providing it’s at or above 50k.

I thought it might be relevent since how many Sim Racing games are handled with as a service with interation upon interation. I'm curious to see if we'll see anything beyond tracks & cars in the form of DLC for Project CARS and real features like RealRoad (see rFactor 2) and driver swaps might be carried over for the sequel.

I'd say the answer to those questions is most likely no and yes :(

EDIT: Also I would put money on the ROI for WMD investors being far less preferable this time around...

I'm not sure if I consider this confirmed. Just because they have laid down some groundwork for a potential sequel doesn't necessarily mean it's going to come out. Hell, I'm sure The Last Guardian was discussed internally for quite some time.

So no longer the "destiny" like model they originally said it was going to be then.
There is plenty of content planned for pCARS. Nothing else has been confirmed that the game will eventually happen and that a small team will be doing pre-production work at some point in the future.

I'm pretty sure that if this bombs on consoles a sequel will be a lot less likely.

I'm sure it will do very well in PS4 considering this is only Sim (DC was more arcade) and has big install base (especially Europe domination). But on XB1 i doubt because they have already Forza 5 and new one Forza 6 coming for holidays and its install base is not very good in europe.

Why would it bomb?

I also think the xbox players have little reason to buy this. Secondly most people that are looking for a racing game, aren't looking for sims. Driveclub has satisfied (or deterred because of poor experiences at launch) people from the genre for a while on the ps4 I guess. Hardcore sim racers will probably get it, but might be more inclined to do so on PC. My professional guestimate is that it wont do as well as DC did on the ps4. That doesn't say it wont do well enough.

There is a big sim fanabase in Playstation who play Gran Tourismo, so it will do great as we have no idea when we will get GT7. DC satisfies different thing which is more arcade but not simulation.

To be fair Destiny probably isn't the best example of games-as-a-service anyway, if the recent bullshit is anything to go by. ;D

Yeah, you're right, but I am pretty sure they actually mentioned Destiny in an interview about the vision for the future.

He's compared future plans for the title to that of sci-fi game Destiny, which receives regular new missions to play and has a decade-long plan in place.

Andy said: "The concept of releasing a game and moving on are long gone.

"Project CARS both from a technology and design standpoint are built for the future, so expect to see A LOT of content coming out for the game on a regular basis long after launch.

"We’ll have more info on this soon but looking at what Destiny is doing is a good starting point ;-)"

Quite an ironic statement considering the leaked news.

Confident. Here's hoping they have reason to be.

Been looking forward to playing this for a while.

This is what happens when you don't have a big publisher breathing down your neck and calling the shots.

Gran Turismo has an 18 year old brand name though. But you know, we'll see how it does. I wish slightly mad all the best in that respect.

Should release 1 first.

Hm, don't know if Project CARS will be succesful.
And I don't know how much it has to sell on consoles to be succesful.
They already have the Kickstarter money, so..... will they be happy if it
sells 1 million combined on all consoles?

Whoa, that article is awful. Anyways, nothing is set in stone, and SMS will make the proper announcement, with detailed info, etc when the time is right for them.

Just a tiny bit, they should be getting infront of this and explaining what they have planned in the form of DLC. It's definately going to have me thinking what's been but on the shelf for the next game though.

If true then I'd expect it to start rolling out early next year?
You mean the game or the WMD signup?

The game won't be coming in quite some time, but the WMD start for the preproduction of pCARS2 might start then.

Quite an ironic statement considering the leaked news.
Again, nothing has changed from the original plan when it comes to end products. pCARS 2 has always been there, but at the same time there are extensive plans for post release support for pCARS and we will be seeing some really major content expansions.

I'd be a tad surprised if Project Cars 1 didn't make its money back. ~£3m wasn't it?

What they should really do is lower the entry price for ps4 gamers in the uk. :p
Would love to buy this, but games these days have gone beyond what I'm willing to shed without much thought on day 1.

Let's correct some stuff right now...

First of all nothing is "confirmed"... All it was was one post from the head of the studio explaining what his plans are for the sequel.

Second, like _machine said, this doesn't change ANYTHING about pCARS 1. There's a huge amount of DLC planned for that game and that will still be coming out. It's been clear for months that there are limits with what they can do with the pCARS 1 engine. Lots of stuff will be added to the first game but there's also a lot of crazy stuff they want to do that can't simply be patched on the original game.

Third, I don't see why it would affect the ROI for the first game... The second game won't be out for at least another 2 years in a best case scenario. Still plenty of room for the first game.

You guys really need to understand how game developpement works. When a studio ends developpement on a game, they don't go and sit on their hands for 6 months waiting to see if they should make something else... Once a game is done, a small part of the team "stays behind" to work on the DLC and future updates and the rest of the studio moves on to the next project. As a head of studio, Ian has to give work to his employees if he doesn't want to be forced to sack them. THIS IS NORMAL PROCEDURE.... Actually, in a "normal" AAA studio the work on the sequel would have started months ago. The only difference with pCARS is that the info is out in the public.

Oh and btw, for people who are expecting negative reaction to the news in here... There's a huge thread on the WMD forum about the news and the reaction from members is 100% EXTREMELY positive...

Some people are really naive if they think that all the devs aren't already working on a sequel of they game they are buying on day 1 lol

Unfortunately, I imagine when this inevitably sells under expectations on consoles, a sequel will seem a lot less economically viable, especially after all the delays that probably cost more than they expected the game would in the end.

It's a shame too because I can tell you from first hand experience, this is one of the best racing games in the last decade.

..and it will be coming to PS8 and Xbox I in 2035. A Wii U 64 version will be coming at a later date along with PC.

Sorry..had to do it. =)

Edit: Oh! Nibel beated me like a boss for like a thousand years, I feel fine however, I lost against the best.

I suppose it was the impression that the devs gave that has misled people, they gave the impression that their full attention would be given to working on Pcars and providing content for it for "a very long time", not spent on a sequel (not that I assumed a sequel would never appear, but I just assumed that Pcars would be their primary focus for the time being).

Which they are doing.... Nothing has changed there.

There's a lot of different roles in a developpement team... You don't need designers and concept artists and the like to make DLC... Like I said in my earlier post. Part of the team stays behind to work on the DLC and the rest of the team moves on to something new.

Exactly, as much as backers (I assume) are saying nothing has changed this doesn't give me a good image of the developer. We'll see how this goes down the road, I'm just not believing everything blindly from a dev without a good track record regarding these things.

Isn't that how development works? Finish one game and start another. No where does it say stop all development and support of post release content and patches for the first game, because obviously they will still be working on that too. I'm not sure what the issue is here other than the fact that they have said nothing about the Wii U version, both internally and externally, for months.
